Yep, Elton John, around 1974-75.

Yes, John recorded "LSD" with Elton because of a bet they had. Elton stated that "Whatever Gets You Thru The Night" would be #1 and John said it wouldn't. So, on Thanksgiving Day Nov. 28, 1974, John Lennon made his last concert appearance, altough no one knew it then, and performed "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds", "Whatever Gets You Thru The Night" and "I Saw Her Standing There" at Madison Square Garden.

That's true, Beatkat, but Elton also recorded his own version of "LSD" in the studio. I VIVIDLY remember hearing it on the radio -- it was very early on in my Beatles fan-dom, and I remember some stupid kid at school who said, after hearing The Beatles' original version, "Ooh, I don't like that remake of ELTON'S song!" Grrr!! And another result of that bet, btw, was that John got back together with Yoko after his "Lost Weekend," and Sean was born about a year later...that's why Elton is Sean's Godfather!

Nipper, John went into the studio with Elton and did some of the backing vocals for Elton John's version of "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds".

Apropos the post......
It wasnt really a bet though, it was more like a challenge, John had to agree to perfrom with Elton live on stage if the song got to number 1, and of course it did, so John had to do it, even though he was scared sh..tless (well wouldnt you be with Yoko in the audience?!) OK, OK, Yoko fans, I apologise (but I dont mean it!)

And in the end..

Isn't that when he got back with Yoko from his lost weekend? He came back from LA to perform with EltonJ and she was there and they kissed and made up.

Yes, http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/cat.gif, I knew that...I think that might have been where the bet/challenge stemmed from...

Ha anyone ever heard Elton's tribute to John ? It's Called "Empty Garden"
....another nice tribute was Paul Simon's The Late Great Johnny Ace
....and yet another, was Queen's Life Is Real(song for Lennon) in which Mercury states " Lennon is a genius living in every pore", i couldn't have put it better myself !

Didn't John also play guitar on Elton's version of 'LSD?' Or was that just for the concert?

I've got the album that the Elton John song is on...what's really funny is I remember when it came out, but apparently there are a lot of people who've never heard the song...it's a wonderful one, never fails to make me cry...
There's also a fabulous tribute song called "The Dakota" by a New York folk singer named Christine Lavin...another real 10-hankie song, beautiful and sweetly sad...

Yeh Jami, I get the impression Elton really admired and loved John.
I've been guilty of being a little hard on old Elton( i made a sarcastic comment about his and Paul's impending duet), but that's really because i'm not quite as big a fan of his newer material. But you're right he has written some beautiful tracks. Have you ever seen him live Jami ?

I don't really like much (or I should say any), of Elton's newer stuff either, but his old stuff is very high on my list. He's always been one of my very favorites. Yes, I have seen him live......he's fantastic!

Oh I get you NW :-) No, my thoughts on Elton are purely platonic !........not thar there is a relationship you understand !!
Jami, My friend has seen him live a couple of times and said he puts on an Amazing show. I'd agree with Jtal "Tumbleweed" is probably his best album. Though "Goodbye" is also pretty hot. Well, we'll see what the duet with Paul is like. I'm assuming it's not co-written giving the titles "Ladies Men" :-)
I went off him after the Diana song. Regardless of the good intentions, the song was the most gross thing i've ever heard.

"Empty Garden" was written from Elton's heart, I think. They were good friends. It is one of my favorites by him.
I do like just about all of his earlier works, mainly up to the mid-80's.

I agree, I don't care for most of Elton's recent stuff...I think the things he's done for Disney REEK of soppy sugar syrup! The stuff he did with Bernie Taupin as co-writer was much better! So many of his earlier albums are classics!
And I do think Kat's right -- "Empty Garden" was definitely written from the heart...
