The decade of the 1970s has been called The Renaissance of American Cinema, and I've been on a mission to introduce some of the classics to the younger generation.

I'm a total 70s girl, and I know I'm not the only one here who remembers the decade, so I hope you will make some great movie recommendations here for the young ones (and others) to check out... Here are three classics.

A serious one about NYC before they "cleaned it up":

A funny but brilliant one (also featuring NYC):

A very silly but brilliant "screwball comedy":

Yes indeedy!! There's an equally good car chase scene in The Seven-Ups (starring Roy Scheider). Check it out! :thumbu2:

A couple of originals that were remade in the 2000's (although not done nearly as well as these '70s originals, IMHO):

The Bad News Bears
The Longest Yard

Fantastic lists! Every single one of those films was great. (The only two I don't remember ever seeing are The Seven-Ups and Walkabout.)

What a decade for films! I went to see The King's Speech the other day (which I thoroughly enjoyed), and they showed two previews that looked like modern versions of 70s movies... not remakes, just modern takes on the same themes.

Walkabout was, I believe, the first major Australian film to be shown in the American market. It was a story of two children lost in the Outback and befriended by an Aboriginal boy, who was on his "walkabout". Very powerful and beautifully-made film.

There were some wonderful movies in the 1970's, true.

I think I watched The Turning Point about a zillion times when my family first got HBO in 1977.

Did anyone see "Time After Time?" With Malcolm MacDowell and Mary Steenburgen? I watched that one a million times too.

Jaws...Close Encounters of the Third Kind...The Sting...Monty Python & the Holy Grail...Life of Brian...All the President's Men...Godfathers I and 2...Sounder...
Of course, there was no lack of steaming piles of ...junk...in theaters too. How about "Thank God It's Friday?"

I loved 1979's Kramer v Kramer

Being There 1979, but released in early 1980

Animal House 1979

I love that movie!!! Loved Malcolm since A Clockwork Orange, but he was absolutely charming as H.G. Wells. Great film!

Another one that carries a special place in my heart is François Truffaut's Small Change (L'Argent de poche):

"I Wanna Hold Your Hand" 1978 I just love that movie. Susan Newman, Paul Newman's daughter starred in this as a Beatle buster who later learns the Beatles RULE!

Oh god, beatlebangs64, I think I saw that in the theater about 7 times in 1978. I even own the VHS tape.

When my best friend Don & I watched it years later, he said, "My God, that Rosie is SO YOU."
