How'd you do? I hope it was fun! Do you ever come out and play (that sounds silly!) at the Chicago 'Fest?

We did good, thanks. Made a real respectable showing, but only (3)real professional bands made it to the finals. The guys who look and dress like them and have Beatle haircuts. But it was great fun. Martin Lewis was the emcee and got into all the places that the bands have traveled from. Out of 41 bands, I was told we were probably around 15th. Bands come from afar to play here (Detroit, Maine) but we don't travel. We have families and day jobs. "We're just a band".

I'd say that 15th must put you up near the top of the not "professional" bands! Good job! Wish I could have heard you, but I don't travel either! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif (Well, not for Beatlefest!)

Alf Bicknell (Beatle chauffeur and road manager) had a stand in the marketplace at Beatlefest selling pictures and vhs. he was telling us how he wished that he'd saved all the programs and things from traveling with them back in the day. A good natured man. He says Paul has stayed in touch with him and whenever he needs something for a Beatle project Paul is there for him.

Jtal, sorry you didn't make it to the finals. Maybe next time. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/wink.gif

Hi Jtal,
I was there (only on Sat, though) and competed in the soundalike contest with my boyfriend. We didn't make it to the finals, either. The level of talent exhibited by everyone was amazing... much greater than previous years. There seemed to be a few mean spirited competitors in the soundalike category but those who made it past the audition were all well-deserving! I hope you had fun and I'm sorry I didn't get to hear you. Does your band have a site?

SgtPprsGrl, yeah, it was fun. All the bands were jampacked in the lobby waiting to go on one after the other, but unlike the soundalike competition, were all friendly hanging out and discussing our instruments and how far we traveled. I was talking with this band who drove 5 hours from Maine to be there. The level of talent was tremendous here as well. We haven't gotten around to making a website yet but will soon enough.

hi jtal,
sounds like fun! i heard the band that won was really young and really good... and others told me that the level of talent there was high. i would love to compete in that competition but don't think i'd get so far seeing as i'm a female that doesn't really look or act like a beatle! do you guys have all the outfits and everything?

SgtPpGrl, no we don't get into that part of it. We stay true to the arrangements, and the important licks in the songs, but are basically a Jersey style guitar band. For example we play Please Mr. Postman sort of like you would expect Bruce to do it.

Thanks, Kat. Actually, it was more of an event and the competition was secondary (for us anyway). It's really a heck of a show seeing 40 bands each doing a a different Beatle song.

ER, do you know which song they played? Every band was at the least enjoyable to see and hear.

SgtPprsGirl, I know what you mean about doing covers. I feel the same way. We start out copying note for note (not to sound too corny or anything but you get the essense of the song that way) and then it usually winds up transformed into our style. A song like And I Love Her,however, stays exactly the same as the record.
The Devils? No, can't say that I follow hockey.

hey Jtal,
That's awesome... I find it hard to do any kind of cover with out adding a lot of myself/influences into it. I don't know if that comes from being a songwriter myself or being a big music fan of other groups/artists as well.
Bruce rocks... but are you a Devils fan?!

jtal: Congratulations on doing so well! I haven't visited this site in about a month because of a spate of some terrible luck my family and I have been experiencing. I was very happy to read about your successful experience at Beatlefest. Good for you, pal! I hope I'll have more time to check in with all of you again.

Jtal909 : Congrats mate...!! You made a remark earlier in the forum that your band is just basically a "BAND" with family and jobs. Those are the bands you "Like to Hear". Congrats again Jtal909...!!

OFan : I missed you...!! Welcome back...!! Is everything OK with you and the family..? Once in awhile, I see your son posting on the Beatlelinks. We didn't have another fire in the kitchen again, did we..? Anyway, good to see you again OFan...!! Take Care,

Don't worry, Glen, it wasn't another fire, thank goodness. It was a string of miserable events, beginning with the theft of my husband's wallet with ALL his identification in it. These savvy thieves ran amok using HIS name and credentials. Thousands of dollars of ill-gotten merchandise was amassed and WE'VE been going through he-- trying to straighten out this mess and keep our impeccable credit-rating from being destroyed. Right after that occurrence, numerous break-downs around the house took place. We thought we were plagued or something!!! However, after spending huge amounts of money and dealing with repairmen who don't really seem to care, all appears to be well for the moment. (I don't dare say this out loud, though, lest I awaken the gremlins!) Now, aren't you sorry you asked??? Thanks for caring, pal! P.S. My son is Dr. Winston O'Boogie; there's also a Dr. Winston O'Boggie on this site, so don't get confused like I did! Cheers!

OFan, I hope everyone is doing alright now. I know what a hassle it is when your wallet is stolen.
As for things breaking down, doesn't it seem like it's always within a week AFTER the warranty runs out?

'kat: Ain't that the truth! I also forgot to mention that our car was vandalized while we were out having dinner at a local restaurant several weeks ago. Can you blame us for wanting to throw in the towel? However, spring is here, baseball season is upon us, so hope springs eternal...

Gotta love baseball season. I was surprised last Sunday when my wife told me after breakfast that we were going to Yankee Stadium as a birthday present. One minute I'm eating scrambled eggs, 2 hours later I'm sitting in left field. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/cool1.gif
