Canadian actor-comedian Leslie Nielsen, who went from drama to inspired bumbling as a hapless doctor in Airplane! and the accident-prone Det. Frank Drebin in the Naked Gun comedies, has died. He was 84.

You beat me to it, Beatle4.
So sad. Leslie Nielsen was one of my favorite actors. I loved his work in movies like "Airplane", and "The Naked Gun", etc. Such a funny man.
He was a "serious" actor prior to "Airplane". But after the success of that movie, he was pretty much pegged as the off-beat humor guy—which he embraced quite happily.

As my cousin wrote on Facebook earlier this evening:
"Leslie Nielsen is dead? Surely you can't be serious!"
"I am! And don't call me Shirley."
Leslie Nielsen went to the same high school that I student-taught at last year here in Edmonton. In a long list of famous alumni, his was a star that shone brightly to this day within the halls of Victoria School for Performing and Visual Arts and it always made me smile when some freckle-faced kid would come up to me and say, proudly, "Hey, did you know that the guy from Naked Gun went to this school?" He will be sorely missed...

Very Sad News. Leslie Neilsen Was A Very Underrated Actor, Who Made Some Very Well Received Movies. In 1980 Came His Deadpan Portrayal Of Dr. Rumack In Airplane!. And A Second Career Was Born. From A Straight Actor To A Silly Comedian Is Something Not All Actors Can Accomplish, Or Would Even Attempt. Leslie Neilsen Pulled It Off Seemingly With Ease.
Surely We Will Miss Leslie Neilsen.

Leslie Nielsen 'was quite an ambassador' for Edmonton (http://www.edmontonjournal.com/Leslie+Nielsen+quite+ambassador+Edmonton/3901930/story.html)
