DJ JOSH laughs when she looks back on her 26 years as a DJ, recalling the moment where she broke a world embargo on a Beatles song.
She had a top excuse though George Harrison made her do it.
It was at the 1995 Grand Prix, the last before it went to Melbourne, where Josh was approached by a very drunk Beatle while mixing at the Adelaide Hilton.
``He hounded me all night to play this CD, so I played it,’’ the Novar Gardens resident says.
What the DJ didn’t know was that the CD contained the track Free as a Bird, the group’s first single in 25 years.
She had just played the world’s most anticipated song to a crowd in Adelaide, only days before its worldwide release.
``I hadn’t realised what I’d done and it was all George’s fault.
``I could have been sued for millions.’‘
These days it’s not so stressful and she’s enjoying kicking back, managing City Gym and Fitness Centre while doing the DJ thing on weekends.
Her busy and successful career boasts multiple national DJ awards, radio hosting gigs and sets with high-profile international artists.
She was also the first SA DJ to play at Sydney’s Gay and Lesbian Mardis Gras.
While female DJs are now taking over their male counterparts, it was much harder for Josh when she first started more than 20 years ago.
``There was a lot going against me back then.
``There’s so many young girls now, most of them grew up around my music and were influenced by the fact I was out there doing it.’‘
DJ Josh plays fortnightly Sunday sessions at Plank Kitchen and Bar, 6-10 Adelphi Terrace, Glenelg North, from 1pm to 5pm and will play at the British Hotel, 13 North Parade, Port Adelaide, on Saturday, September 18, 10pm to 2am.
