Dhani is teaming up with Ben and another musician, Joseph Arthur to form a band called Fistful of Mercy. They will be performing live for the first time August 26 in Seattle. Too bad I'm clear across the country. Anyway, here's a short article and the video for their first song!

There have been some rumours in the Dhani fora about a new project but this is really far from what I hoped for.
When you listen to "Fistful Of Mercy" - the song, the first thing which you can notice if the acoustic sound of guitars and violin and awesome 3-person harmonies.
This song is amongst the most wonderful new musical experiences I have listened to the past few years.
I also beleieve to see Dhani so good in shape with this kind of music.
How did these 3 come together? We will dig deeper in to this.
Some surprise?
Dhani seems so 'at home' in this project.
I so much look forward to hearing more about this.
Ben Harper is new to me, however when you go to his website and listen to some audio it is quite in the same area as this project in terms of musical style.
http://www.benharper.com/
He does some John Lennon like guitar play ( For You Blue) on the Fistful Of Mercy song, and when you take his song "Thank Me In The Morning" it is close to Fistful Of Mercy in terms of sound.
On the website you can listen to his previous albums and I have played "Lifeline" of which I believe those who like the music of Bob Dylan, Tom Petty will love this. When you listen to "Younger Than Today" you will expect Jim K on drums and Jeff L as producer. "Paris Sunrise" sounds really terriffic with a great slide guitar.
He can also play quite hard rock which you can hear a.o. on "Keep It Together" on the Live album "
Live from the Montreal International Jazz Festival"
Joseph Arthur -
You will be surprised by his music.
Here is his website
http://www.josepharthur.com/
Go to "Downloads" and hear songs like "Too Much To Hide" or the songs from "Could We Survive" which have a high Ukelele potential.
So, first reaction from my side is...excellent !!!!!

Joseph Arthur, Dhani Harrison and Ben Harper chose KCRW’s signature music show Morning Becomes Eclectic to debut their new project – Fistful of Mercy. The band performed an intimate, secret show for a small group of friends and family at the Village Studios earlier this week for broadcast on Morning Becomes Eclectic today. You can stream itlive at 11:15am or check it out now on demand here: http://tinyurl.com/KCRWFistfulofMercy
Jason Bentley interviewed the trio between sets, delving into the formation of Fistful of Mercy, named after one of their own songs, and discovered it was conceived in the studio in just three days. The band joked about Arthur keeping them working until 5am but they all agreed the quick turnaround only enhanced their creativity and determination and allowed no time for egos to get in the way. According to Arthur, they never planned on the three-part harmonies, it just happened organically and “they all picked a note.”
The project is a true collaboration between three extremely talented musicians –and friends – which was highly evident in their live performance, as they joked around on stage in front of an audience that included Tom Morello, Michael Ostin, Rosanna Arquette, Lauren Graham, Paul Krauss, Sal Masakela and more.
After their marathon recording session, Harrison called legendary session drummer Jim Keltner into the studio to add his touch to the recording. The album – “As I Call You Down” –which will be out October 5 on the label founded by his dad, Hot Records.

In February, when Ben Harper, Joseph Arthur and Dhani Harrison arrived at the Carriage House studio in Los Angeles’ Silverlake neighborhood, they had three days booked and zero songs to record. “I thought I was going there to add some guitars or harmonies on Joseph’s album,” says Harrison, who was invited to the session by Harper, whom he befriended at a skate park in Santa Monica. “When I got to the studio, I saw Joe and asked, ‘What songs are we going to do?’ He said we hadn’t written them yet.” After three long days, the trio had recorded the nine acoustic tracks that make up As I Call You Down — and called themselves Fistful of Mercy, after the track of the same name. “I never thought we’d pull off an entire album, [I thought] maybe we’d get an EP,” says Harper, who credits Arthur as the catalyst who pushed for three songs a day. “The three of us were able to create something we never could have done on our own.”
With three acoustic guitars and three microphones, the team worked out musical arrangements, and then retreated to different corners of the studio to write. “We were each others’ lyric police,” says Arthur. ( “It was very ‘Wilbury’ style,” says Harrison, whose late father George was a member of the Travelin’ Wilburys.) Many times, Harrison threw out lyrical themes for inspiration. “Things Go ‘Round” is a throwback to John Lennon’s “Instant Karma,” imagining a world where people are immediately accountable for their actions. When Harrison called for a blues number, the trio quickly drafted “My Father’s Son.” Says Arthur: “It’s really about the three of our voices, and the harmonies. We’re basically singing together the whole time.”
With nine acoustic and vocal tracks completed, Harrison was determined to ratchet the music up to another level. He instinctively called the legendary session drummer Jim Keltner, an old family friend. “I’d never done anything that I thought was worthy of calling Jim,” says Harrison. “We had an emotional conversation on the phone, and he heard some of the stuff we’d done, and he said he’d do it.” Keltner overdubbed percussion, Arthur added bass, and Harper (who calls Keltner the “Dalai Lama of the drums”) added some slide guitar. “These guys are so talented,” says Harrison of his bandmates, who will all hit the road together in October. “I can’t believe I get to call them my musical brothers.”

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/music_blog/2010/08/la-supergroup-alert-ben-harper-joseph-arthur-dhani-harrison-debut-fistful-of-mercy-kcrw.html
Fistful of Mercy is a new band with an intriguing pedigree, embodied by a trio of distinctive singer-songwriters: Ben Harper, Joseph Arthur and Dhani Harrison. From the first moments of the band's debut performance Tuesday night at The Village studios in West Los Angeles, the sound could be unruly or tranquil, unveiling a modern, quirkier take on the Crosby, Stills and Nash model, colliding folk, blues, eccentric pop and gorgeous three-part vocal harmonies.
The eight-song performance for about 100 invited guests was hosted by KCRW, which is broadcasting the concert at 11:15 a.m. Thursday on “Morning Becomes Eclectic,” previewing material from the trio's new album, “As I Call You Down,” set for an Oct. 5 release on Harrison's Hot Records West label. The songs were agonized and joyous, impulsive and restrained, exploring themes that Harrison listed as “love, God . . . music, peace.”
During much of the set, the trio sat with acoustic guitars, strumming jangly steel strings, with elegant slices of violin from Jessy Greene, who also appears on the album. Harrison moved to piano for the album's title song, as he, Harper and Arthur sang in warm harmony: “When I fall inside a hole I can't crawl out of / better give up my control as I call you down.”
The group then dove into some tough, agonized blues with “Father's Son,” a song inspired by Robert Petway's ancient “Catfish Blues,” harmonizing as Harper sliced away on an acoustic Weissenborn lap-slide guitar.
For the moment, Fistful of Mercy has yet to announce any tour plans, and remains a compelling side trip for the three artists: Harper already has another album completed with his band Relentless7, and Harrison's group thenewno2 just performed at this summer's Lollapalooza fest. Arthur is a post-modern folk-rocker who has known Harper for years, and they often spoke of collaborating one day; and Harper met Harrison only recently by chance at a local skate park. The new band wrote and recorded its debut suddenly over three long days.
They were joined in the studio by the acclaimed rock drummer Jim Keltner, who has performed with a long list of classic rock artists, including Harrison's father, the late Beatle George Harrison. “I haven't seen him since my old man was around,” the younger Harrison said between songs, “so it was heavy sessions.”
During the final minutes of Tuesday's show, there was a Beatles-like pop swirl on “Things Go 'Round” and a raw, cascading pattern to the instrumental “30 Bones.” Harper ripped and slashed on electric lap-slide for “Restore Me,” unfurling a tense, shimmering sound of melody and feedback, blending into the cooing of their voices: “You want it all, but you got to forgive. . . .”
The night closed with the urgent jangle of “With Whom You Belong,” and sounded the most like classic Crosby, Stills and Nash as they harmonized on words that could easily describe the roots of this new trio: “You find your way, to write your song / and come what may, I hope you find friends with whom you belong.”
Set list:
“In Vain or True”
“As I Call You Down”
“Father's Son”
“Fistful of Mercy”
“30 Bones”
“Restore Me”
“Things Go 'Round”
“With Whom You Belong”

This was one big question I had while listening to the broadcast.... did they write this one? Is this an old blues masterpiece I have never, ever heard?
Just fabulous....
"Things Go 'Round" has a Pretty Things type of feeling to it.

Wow still havent heard the songs yet but am very interested.. the seattle show looks so small and intimate too!
Have loved Ben Harper's music for many years and finally got to see him last november opening for Pearl Jam, and he was great..Ben Harper also worked with "Uncle Ringo" as of late, so maybe there is more to this skatepark in santa monica than meets the eye..does one just go to a skate park and bump into Ben harper on his skateboard?!
As for Dave Grohl and Co suposedly turning down Paul's offer to join TCV, i suspect he may be exageting a little..Paul probably just offered to jam with them or be a guest..Grohl loves to exagerate and is a huge Beatles fan and has even played with Paul..doubt he would turn him down for real!!:laugh5:
what self respecting beatle fan would not be excited about being in a band with a beatle?! i think Grohl protests too much! lol

With Pearl Jam! That would be a fantastic show! What's this about working with Uncle Ringo?? Do tell! :teeth1: That skate park thing was so funny...:laugh5: Dhani gives the three second synopsis, lol!!
And Dhani says he told Ben to not be skateboarding, that's he'd break a bone, and then I guess he did fall! And Ben said, "As I was falling I was thinking of you" and Dhani replied that was a great name for a song, haha!!
When you hear it, you're gonna be amazed that this was recorded in three days. Start to finish... well, they added bits like drumming and things, but I mean, generally, it was a three day thing. These songs all came about in three days... Genius. It's the work of collaborative genius for sure! Not since Wings Wild Life have I heard a three-day-er I've loved so much!
Ben called Jim K "one of the greatest people on earth".... isn't that cool? He said he could listen to Jim's stories for days.. and they had days with him so he heard lots of stories. That is so cool. And Dhani said, "I haven't seen him in the studio since my Dad was around..." I hope Dhani was not too sad....
Restore Me... what a song! 30 Bones... Father's Son... Fistful of Mercy... and With Whom You Belong are my favorites. With Whom You Belong is a song about friendship and reminded them of how they became good buddies through the process of this project.
I just can't wait to get the songs on my mp3 player!!

I really want a CD release and hope one is forthcoming..i think i will enjoy this alot more than thenewno2, because it is acoustic/ rootsy/folk almost kind of music and looking just at Ben Harper who is kinda folksy blues/rock i would presume as much.. I believe Dhani to be very talented, and was blown away by some of thenewno2's intial material.."choose what your watching" was one of the best things i'd heard in years, but he decided to go down a more electronic path, i guess to do something completly different from his father (understandable) "choose" didnt even make it onto the album :afraid2::bigeyes3:.... I truly believe Dhani really needs a good producer or someone to guide him and keep him on track..if George was around or Jeff Lynne perhaps would step in it would be great, but then it would be too much like a "George Harrison" project and i truly believe he is trying to carve his own path and i do respect him for that. Consequently apart from a couple of tracks i was dissapointed by the newno2 album..this, however gives me some hope!!
What is this 'hot records' i read somehwhere? His 'fathers label'?? George? hot records? new to me i have never heard of it and am having some doubts about George and hot records?? The only thing i can think of is HOT is short for Hari on Tour, and i doubt George would name a record label that, cause he hated touring, unless he was having another 'volume 3' moment :laugh5:...
What is this Hot records, then?

yes with Pearl Jam!! Ediie Vedder came on to do a duet of David Bowie/Freddie mercury's "Under pressure" with him!! And Ben returned the favour playing lap slide on a PJ track..was a great triple bill, Liam Finn (well worth checking out) opening too..Ben's wife, the actress Laura Dern was on side of the stage with their young kids :) Pearl Jam were also great even doing covers of The Who's Love Reign O' er Me (excellent) and closing with Neil Young's Rockin in the free world!!
Jim Keltner is the man..so good he was iinvolved in this project, he should be their full time drummer!! to think i went to Simon & Garfunkel (twice!) just in the hope of seeing Keltner, and he didnt do that tour!! Ok so it wasnt the ONLY readon i went :laugh5::laugh5:
if I'm not mistaken, Jim worked on the posthumous Brainwashed sessions with Dhani and Jeff recording new drum tracks, so Dhani has been with him in the studio and seen him since George passed, certainly..but i guess he classes all of that of course as "George sessions" and his father being around still or just on 'holiday'
A really interesting collaboration was Dhani and Jakob Dylan on "Gimme some Truth" for the Make Some Noise, Save Darfur! Lennon tribute..Dhani was more in the background to Dylan here (very George!) , and of course George played on the original track , so maybe thats how that came about.. But the son's of Dylan and Harrison to me would probabaly be the most exciting new project there could ever be!! Jakob Dylan is now a firmly established and fully fledged musician/singer songwriter of quite some repute in his own right..
As for Ben Harper and "Uncle Ringo", they are friends and interviewed each other for a Myspace interview..ben and the Relentless 7 have even backed Ringo (as Ringo's band!) for a couple of TV shows, i think even for his 70th birthday one.. Why dont they all just do a big tour!! Fistful of Mercy with Ringo and Jim Keltner on drums!!

Hot Records, Ltd is actually Dhani's, but gets published through Harrisongs. Yeah, it's all Dhani's!
I loved thenewno2, and really really hope Dhani continues writing and recording with the guys there (Oli, too!). The word on the devotee grapevine is that Dhani plans on still making that second thenewno2 lp, and that he is still writing and recording for it. So, that's good news!
All that said, I am (like you) naturally more inclined towards the more folksy and less electronic stuff. To hear Dhani bring in the blues influence was a real moment for me. I just sat in awe hearing that Dhani walked in singing Catfish Blues, and then asking for a blues number and all. So, yeah, this is more like stuff I normally would listen to and seek out. Electronic Sounds are not typically my thing, but I will say seeing Dhani play them live made a difference, too... brought it more into place for me?
Dhani is great, I hope he does it all and especially just follows his heart. I'll be following and listening carefully! :smile1:

I saw the video of the performance which includes an interview halfway the set and I believe the skate park remarks were not serious. If you are interested have a look but it does not sound really hot topic. Oli is involveed on it, who also was there.
Dhani and Ben know eachother via mutual friends one of them with the name of Shelby.
The guys explain that Joe and Ben are long time friends and have toured and had often talked about recording together, so then Joe called Ben telling him he was in LA for a week, playing at The Troubadour, and suggested to hire a studio and write something. They booked a studio and Ben texted Joe back asakinge "Do you know Dhani Harrison" "No, why, is he in our band? " and then Ben said "yes I think he is in our band".
The interviewer then asks "did you have songs ready or a plan?"
Dhani then sais "No. I turned up since Ben asked me to help...he said "Joe's making this record and I'm his friend and there is a studio booked and why don't you turn up" and Dhani said "I'll be there on the minute, so I went there and Joe sat there and I only brought a Ukelele thinking it would some acoustic stuff and it turns out Joe had all this equipment with him and so I said ...well what are the songs, I will learn them before Ben gets here cause he was a bit late and then Joe said "we haven't written them yet" so I said "what do you mean, there's an engineer sitting there in a full studio..it looked insane...so we did 3 songs the first day, 3 the 2nd day and then Joe kept pushing us saying "we'll stay here till 5 in the morning and then we will have an album"
"It were just three really long days"
Then about the 3 harmony
"It just happened"
About the 3 members the interviewer says "Dhani the way you guys are sitting here it seems like you keep things rolling . "Dhani "I'm the Dad" and the other two "he gives us assignments"
About "With Whom You Belong" it was about Friendship and a result of the of process of what happened, we became really good friends and the energy which brought us together is represented in this song. It came out of the spirit of the session.
"Things Go Round"had a working title "Dhani's Waltz. About that is that Joe said "we need a waltz and so why don't you go and write the waltz" .. So Dhani did
OK then about Jim Keltner
When the question was raised and his name came up all three were like "oh yeah wow...Jim"
Ben said indeed "the Dalai Lama of the drums..there's no one like him"
Joe said" Jim is amazing, as cool as a drummer as great as a person he is. He's probably the best drummer in the world and probably the greatest person on earth, if he was a postman you'd wanna sit next to him all day and listen rto his stories because he is amazing in story telling"
The guys talk about how Joe and Dhani tried to add drums to the tracks - big laughs - like Dhani doing Cowbells "Harry Nillson Daybreak by George) and then they decided NOT to do that and said "the only person who can drum on it is Jim Keltner" and those interested aught to watch minute 39 + to have a saying about the engineer who recorded the songs and his feelings about Jim K how they all three talk so huge about Jim.
So Dhani called Jim and it was like "oh you like it then do you, so see you tomorrow...and then everyone looked at me as if I had 3 heads ...and then we had Keltner on the record and it was...pretty emotional.. I mean sad for me because I hadn't seen him in a studio since my old man was around and it was heavy sessions but..they guys...we had a lot of laughs..and then Joe and I played bass and then..it was a different record".
And then when Jim started playing his drum parts Joe told Ben "We're gonna be on the radio !!!"
As for HOT records, it can also refer to Henley On Thames?

Thanks for transcribing the chatty bits of the radio show, FP! That must have been quite some work and is appreciated! :wave1:
Not much to add... I believe the skate park was one in Santa Monica, not really relevant except to go down in Fistful-of-Mercy history, lol... anyway, that's what the reports are saying. And as for Shelby, it is reasonable to assume that the guys refer to Shelby Lynne. Shelby works with Michael Ward from the Wallflowers, so the Jakob Dylan/Dhani tie in there... and she also is in with the Lennon's, singing at a John tribute some years ago.
Speaking of John, I remember during the program they also mentioned that "Things Go 'Round" was inspired by John's Instant Karma.
And speaking of Ben Harper ...he did a duet with Toots Hibbert at a Willie Nelson concert some years ago ... and Toots also plays on JJ Grey's new cd! Toots Hibbert is great....

Just now have i learned about this, and all i can say at this point is....'Huh..well i did not see this coming.'. The acoustic direction has me interested.
As much as i enjoyed seeing thenewno2 in concert when they last passed through my areas, i was not overly keen on the sound ( the venue was more to blame then them..) Not really my kind of music, but reading about this recent venture with a more 'down to earth' sound makes my ears prick up in interest.
I see this venture as a simple gathering of friends just having some creative musical fun, and not nessesarily the 'forming of a new band'. I recall a interview shortly after the conclusion of the Two's first tour where Dhani says - " I hate bands..' . Flowing from one project to another, without feeling 'tied down' is what my impression was regarding how he likes to work on things. Some followers may find the news of this new project disheartening, thinking thenewno2 has 'broken up' ( already know a friend who thought this..) but whatever Dhani in involved in i am sure said followers will support.
Anyone else surprised about this?

That's what I thought too. She has done some things with Ben Harper. First I thought of Shelby maybe being a kid of Jeff, which has come across before when I saw her name pass by but it isn't and the link with Dhani reminded me of video work for thenewno2 but that's Tom's Adria.

From what I understand from the interview with the band Dhani and Joe did not know one another till the day of the first sessions.
It's described as a project which is what Dhani has said before in several interviews, that he will be involved in projects and that those things - also Oli stepping out of Live performances (temporarily) - is just to bee seen as something they do.
So, I am quite positive about this.

Fistful of Mercy joined Eddie Vedder, Natalie Maines, Johnny Depp, Patti Smith, and others for the “Voices for Justice” rally held in Little Rock, AR on August 28, 2010. The rally’s purpose was to raise awareness for the cause of the West Memphis Three – Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley.
Here is a video of the rally where they play "Restore Me" with Eddie Vedder.

Fistful of Mercy...wow.
This was a complete surprise to me when i first heard about it...did not see this coming at all ( like most other people i am sure..). Last i knew he was working on thenewno2's forthcoming 2nd album.
This 'Fistful of Mercy' is a nice musical project that has appeal, but i don't really see this as being a 'band' or 'supergroup' like the press seem to be labeling them as. I see it more as a 'project' between the three of them and i think it's great these guys are getting together to have some musical fun.
A lot of Dhani's fans seem pleased from what i have read elsewhere... perhaps because this new music feels more in tune with what they would like to see him do? Sometimes i really get the impression from them that they want him to be a carbon copy musically of his Father...which i find a bit unfair to Dhani. He should be free to be himself, and thus express himself in his own way through his own music. That is the way it should be, and i think he acheives this with thenewno2 somewhat. Many thenewno2 fans though are now wondering what the status is now for that band, thinking this new project spells the end of the previous. I think both can co-exsist.
Personally i think this new venture will take Dhani in a direction that will open up many more opportunities for him, and possibly even bring his talents to light to a whole new audience. Fantastic if the case may be....he definately has something to offer. This may be a better vehicle for him to do so then the harder edged Twos....who seemed to attract mostly pre-teens and young adults. With Ben and Joe, i think a wider audience spectrum will be acheived and this can only be a enchancement.
We are only 2 weeks into being made aware of this new musical entity and already the vinyl release and many of the Live shows are sold out! Must be all those Ben Harper fans...eh?
Dhani is a charming fellow. After what he has had to go through already in his young life, i can have nothing but utmost respect for him and his endeavours.
I really wish him great success with this new venture. It seems to be off to a awesome start!

Thank you for thinking of me Hari's Chick. Yes, i would like to find a copy of the vinyl at some point...and i did try the Bands' website again just in case a few came up avalible again. Nope....and it puzzles me why they bother keeping the vinyl listed as 'for sale' in their online shop when it has been sold out for a month now!
I think a few independent record shops ( those few still left in the States....sigh....) are the places one needs to go to track this down. Their are some 'famous' ones known in vinyl collector circles and i suppose i could have made some phone calls ....but something tells me all the dealers wanting to buy one to resell are way ahead of me.
I used to be more into that scene...trawling the local record shops and flippping through the record bins. The thrill of 'the hunt' and never knowing what you might find was a real rush for me. Some real serious gems were found that way. I used to do a lots of mail ordering from non-local places i could not get to, along with record collectors, and the like. As the shops closed around here i had to look elsewhere for new vinyl releases, primarily eBay. I still avidly insist on vinyl as my first choice for enjoying music throughly if a release is issued on that format.
One will eventually come my way....i am in no huge hurry really. I have the patience of a rock in some departments of my exsistance....

My vinyl arrived yesterday, so i had my own 'Fistful of Music' Party to celebrate the release. Spun it three times, and LOVED IT. This is definately the kind of music i can get into. Wonderful 'real' feel to it all...and not too overproduced that it feels like studio product to my ears. Absolutely wonderful. I really nice feel to it all....the live shows will be spectacular methinks. I can feel the communal vibes already.
After having heard the LP i am even MORE excited now to see them next month. I was of course excited regardless, but hearing how lovely the music is makes me even more thrilled at what is to come.
I will post a full review later on...but will note '30 Bones' is indeed a fantastic instrumental despite the somewhat odd title for such a glorious piece of music.
Oh..and i HIGHLY recommend tracking down the vinyl LP. The printed photos and the entire visual package within are of gorgeous quality. The LP also comes with a free download card so one can grab a digital version of the album offline at DropCards.com

Dhani Harrison's new group wows crowd at record store free show
http://www.examiner.com/beatles-in-national/new-group-with-dhani-harrison-wows-crowd-at-record-store-free-show
Check the link for various pictures and Dhani wearing a very cool hat
Fistful of Mercy with Dhani Harrison (George Harrison's son), Ben Harper and Joseph Arthur played a free show Tuesday at Vintage Vinyl in Fords, New Jersey.
A few people who were there sent us some notes about the show. Kris Tash, a big fan of the Beatles and George Harrison, said, "Fistful of Mercy put on an absolutely amazing show! They played for about 45 minutes, and did most of the songs from their new CD. The harmonies and the melodies were just absolutely outstanding and the guys were just so sweet and charming on stage. They had a lot of cute exchanges with each other and with the crowd, which was about 200 strong.
"We got there at 5 p.m. and were among the very first ones there, so we lucked out and got to stand right in front of where Dhani was playing!! He is just so like his dad, it's absolutely unbelievable... same looks, same face, same expression, same way his mouth tilts up on the side! He played guitar and he played piano, both of which he was really great at. He is a real musician!"
Bob Gannon, who was also there, told us, "I had not heard any of the songs prior to the performance so I went in blind. I must admit that I went in with not the best expectations but to my surprise, the performance and the songs were quite good. First thing that stands out are the great harmony vocals. All three singers take turns during the songs and all three are obviously passionate with this project that spurred from friendships made.
"The album was written and recorded in three days. I didn't keep count but I believe that they played the whole album. They brought Jessy Greene with them who plays the violin on the album. Dhani played guitars and keyboards and the three have a great rapport with each other."
Kris Tash said that following the show, the band signed CDs and albums for everyone in attendance. "We were at the back of the line since we were at the front for the show and it took a good hour of standing in line til we got in. But oh boy, even after all that time, the guys were just so nice and charming!"
Marie Lacey, who was also there, said "(Dhani) was very sweet and engaging, looked in your eyes when you spoke and really seemed to pay attention to what you were saying."
Bob Gannon ended his note saying, "They are doing some dates around the U.S. and I strongly recommend that you go see them. I listened to the album twice more on the way home and it is growing even more on me."
In the slideshow are pictures of the show from Marie Lacey and Bob Gannon. Thanks, folks!

Yes, the vinyl is well worth investing in.
The quality of the printed cover, sleeve, and overall package as a whole is fabulous. Probably one of the better newer LP packages i have seen in a very long time ( and i have seen very little!).
I posted a rather long winded review on another forum...permit me to share it here for those interested -
Impressions i have regarding the great album..CONTAINS SPOILERS!
Do not read below if you wish to be pleasently surprised while listeing to the album on your own!
-
I have listened to the album three times now, and have to say it is simply marvelous in so many ways. Some wonderful acoustic vibes..with some classical influences, interesting vocals, and a smooth 'feel good' feeling to the entire effort. A absolute winner....and it makes one even more exicted about seeing them perform these peices LIVE.
Definately get yourself to a gig if you can...this will be quite a experience!
All nine tracks are quite nice, and meld together rather nicely. Many of the tunes sound similar ( as in, primarily acoustic at it's core) with some wonderful additons and overlays of other instruments. The violin in particular is very welcome. Some nice slide guitar work and of course very nicely done guitars all around. The one instrumental peice ( '30 Bones') is fantastic. Grammy material for sure. A gem!
The tracks have a very nice feel to them...a great 60's vibe at some points.....and it all sounds very 'real' and not overly produced. My impressions of tracks, in order, after my first three listens -
'In Vain or True' -
First heard in a early form at thenewno2's performance at Lollapalooza this Summer, the album version is a excellent opening track. Sets the tone for what is to come, and gets you interested. A nice way to start. Really dig the acoustics.
'I Don't Want to Waste Your Time' -
Another decent tune, though on my second play-through i decided there were other tracks i enjoyed more. Similar acoustic vibe but this time with some repetitive lyrics. I noticed this with a couple of songs...but this does not nessesarily mean something negative to be held against the composition.
'As I Call You Down' -
Awesome. I love it. Great lyrics and a wonderful sound that just mellows you out into a nice place to be musicially. A winning cut.
'Father's Son' -
Some insightful lyrics provide a interesting story, as the music turns in a different direction. Get ready for a hoedown..and get ready to clap those hands...it is hard to sit still and listen to this jaunty melody.
'Fistful of Mercy' -
The track that named the group, the song is rather fitting. One of my faves on the album, it is another winner. Similar acoustic vibes with come pleasing ear candy ( love the arrangment) and the lyrics have a reflective meaning. Well done!
'30 Bones' -
A absolutely gorgeous arrangement, this charming instrumental peice is utterly wonderful. Grammy material, for sure. A fantastic peice, one of my top picks on this albums full of so many great efforts.
'Restore Me' -
Another winner for me, just loving it.
'Things Go 'Round'
Another reflective tune, this time with some themes that may be familar to some readers here.
Interesting arrangement, and another tune that breaks away from the previous assortment of feel-good acoustic peices earlier on. Nice.
'With Whom You Belong' -
A great way to wrap up the listening experience...this tune is almost anthem-like in how it makes it's statement and repeats it until the albums end. Another song that uses a few repetitive bars from the lyrics to drive home the expressed message. After hearing this the third time around, i could not get the chorus melody out of my head! Another big favourite....really like this one a lot.
-
Overall, i am definately not dissapointed in any way, shape of form. It is even better then i was expecting, and i absolutely love the feel-good 'real' vibe to the music. The acoustic sound and the harmonies created by the three of them singing is marvelous. What i also liked is that on a couple of their songs, they took turns singing lead vocals. I always enjoyed hearing other bands do this for certain songs ( Queen's 'Let Me Live' immediately springs to mind as a example of this...) and i was happy to hear the technique being used on this album too. Just brill. I am thrilled.
I listened to the vinyl LP version of the album, and i have to say it sounded fantastic. As a vinyl fan, i find the sound better anyway..but this album sounded particularly good to my ears. The LP package is gorgeous...with top drawer quality. The sleeve is printed nicely on excellent quality stock, and the inner sleeve has some handsome printing of it's own. The colour reproductions of the various photos are a nice plus, not to mention the insert - a plastic card to be used on DropCards.com for a free download of the entire album. Another big plus was the vinyl record itself, which was THICK and heavy...just the way us vinyl fans love em'! The cool 'Goat Logo' image is used as the record labels....nice touch, boys!
Serious vinyl fans will be VERY very happy with this ....the entire package as a whole is simply stunning and well worth the investment. If you can track down this album on vinyl, do not hesitate to purchase it! You will not be sorry!
At some point i will find more to rave about with this album...but until then i am going to go back and listen to it all over again. I suggest you do too.....

"Fistful of Mercy put on an absolutely amazing show! They played for about 45 minutes, and did most of the songs from their new CD. The harmonies and the melodies were just absolutely outstanding and the guys were just so sweet and charming on stage. They had a lot of cute exchanges with each other and with the crowd, which was about 200 strong."
Fantastic....great to hear they were enjoyed.
One has to wonder what FoM has planned for the upcoming concert dates. The album is only 9 tracks long...so it makes me curious as to what ELSE they may decide to play.
No no no...i am NOT talking about 'B tunes'....
I am thinking perhaps each of them will play a song from their own solo works. Joe, Ben, and Dhani all have material they could tap into. Most concerts go for about an hour and a half, sometimes 2 full hours...so the thought has crossed my mind as to what else may be on the evenings' playlist.
Of course if they wish to play for 45 mintues and spend the rest of the time hanging out with the fans...hey...that is okay too!! :laugh5:
Another quote from the article -
"I had not heard any of the songs prior to the performance so I went in blind. I must admit that I went in with not the best expectations but to my surprise, the performance and the songs were quite good.'
I can relate to this comment, as this is exactly the position i was in last year when i first saw thenewno2 live. I had no clue, and knew none of their music...but the gig they did near me won me over ten fold. I was so glad i went with a open mind, and 'blind'....it made it all the more exciting.
And last quote, again from the same article -
"(Dhani) was very sweet and engaging, looked in your eyes when you spoke and really seemed to pay attention to what you were saying."
A CLASS ACT yet again! You go, boy!!

For those who may find it of interest...
A fans' review of the Somerville, Ma gig.
--------------------------------------------------
WHAT A SHOW - this is probably THE best concert experience i have had to date in a small venue. When i think back to all the shows i have seen both in large venues and intimate ones, Fistful of Mercy is high up on the list of 'bests to date'.
It was a incredibly impressive, enjoyable, humourous, rip roarin' grand time. The crowd we had in attendence in the Boston area was great and responded well to everything. At some moments, they added to the overall experience of the night and the Band seemed to get a nice buzz off that.
Below is my rave reveiw, with some set insights and answers to some of the ponderings i was having prior to the gig.
If you wish to be pleasently SURPRISED when you see the show, use caution reading below as SPOLIERS are present regarding the set list somewhat.
Those interested in a humble fans' opinions and observations of what went on in Somerville last night...READ ON....
Fistful of Mercy were absolutely wonderful! Such a GREAT vibe in the venue that night, and the Band were really adding to that. In all seriousness i truly feel this is a combo that has a good future ahead. I also have to say that i strongly feel this is a very beneficial enviorment for Dhani. You could tell they were all gelling exceptionally well...and really gave the impression that they were literally surrogate brothers. It was truly wonderful for me to witness this...as a supporter of Dhani's musical ventures, and my own personal impression is this has been a huge step up into a better world for him. A joy to behold this last night. The palatte of music, and the arrangements of said music, had massive appeal. I loved every second of it...so enjoyable.
I hope the three of them continue to combine talents as they were incredibly enjoyable as a live act. Joe was awesome, and Ben was equally awesome. This was my first time seeing either of them, having only recently been introduced to them via my interest in Dhani's works.
The venue ( Somervilly Theatre, Somerville MA) was a fantastic place to see these guys perform, as it is a very nice old-style performance theatre with beautiful arcitecture and comfy seats. I had the perfect seat...11 rows back right in front of where Dhani was located for the evening. Sitting here, on the aisle, allowed for being close enough to the performers to see them play and make eye contact, but far enough away so you were not spending the whole night with a bent neck. It was probably the best seat i have ever had for show. It felt like Joe was singing to me most of the night..as i swear he was looking at me during a lot of the songs, but of course i seriously doubt that was the case. It had probably more to do with him just looking out into the center portion of the seats...but it still felt that way!
To my surprise they had a OPENING ACT which i was not aware of until that night. Forgive as i do not remember his name...but he was interesting as he played a guitar made out of a cigar box. It sounded a lot like a ukulele at points, and i could not help but be reminded of George's love of the instrument and it's sound. This gent also played some elaborate and speedy acoustic guitar. First time hearing anything like this....it was almost too many notes to register at once but was enjoyable and even a bit surreal. A finger-plucking style enabled him to do these tricks, and besides playing 'uke' he also at times sounded like a madolin. Jessy, who plays voilin for 'Fistful of Mercy' joined him about half way though his set, which was nice and added more to the performance i thought. So this was a interesting way to begin the evening.
He played for about an hour, then a short break for the roadies to set up for Fistful of Mercy's set.
When they took the stage at about 8:40pm, the crowd went nuts. The performance was top notch with some lovely surprises. It was fantastic right from the very start: Dhani's brightly happy greeting of "Hello!" really put you in a friendly state of mind. They played all the songs from their debut album, and i have to say that hearing the live renditions really added even more appeal to their collection. You could hear how much more refined and polished the songs were now that the Band has had much more time to play around with them. In additon to playing the album songs, they also played a solo effort of Joe's, Ben's and Dhani's together. There was also a couple of cover songs played...a great catchy Bob Dylan tune ( name escapes me as i know little Dylan material) and a mellow Velvet Underground song ( again...i cannot recall what it was called). Joe was sporting some really cool looking guitars with what looked to be custom paint jobs he had done himself. His hollow-body electric in particular really looked beautifully trippy. Joe also played a very small basic drum kit..mostly for the kick drum to keep the beat on some songs, and another foot pedal for a tamborine sound. All i could think of was those small 'Rock Band' pretend 'drum kits' they sell...particularly the 'Beatles RockBand' one.
The Band also played what they introduced as a brand new song they created together that has yet to be recorded. It was bouncy so they asked the audience to get up and dance to it, which we all happily did. Dhani played bass on that one, and jumped around like he had springs on his feet. It really gave the tune a lot of visual energy, and the audience lapped it up. It was amazing. Dhani was kicking some serious butt on that black bass. They also did a encore with another musical segment, perhaps something of Ben's, before playing yet another tune ( another cover?) and then finishing off the evening with a 'unplugged' version of 'For Whom You Belong'. Details below...

-------------------------
Some memorable moments from the set list , in no particular order....
'I Don't Wanna Waste Your Time' - Show opener, and a great way to start things off since this was the first tune they all worked on in the beginning. It was a nice way to start things.
'Restore Me' - This started off very dreamy and moody...a different arrangement from the original album track which was cool to hear. It then reverted back to it's original form before changing suddenly into this awesome rocking hard version. Ben went absolutely NUTS on his slide guitar and it was freaking AMAZING! WOW. Things then settled back into the usual tempo before the end. Needless to say the audience went absolutely beserk and i think this was the first standing ovation of the evening.
'Father's Son' - A real country sheet-kickin' version...with the tempo increased to a faster pace then the album recording. This one sounded fantastic live. The audience responded by stomping along in time to the beat, as well as clapping..but the stomping was SO enthusiastic the entire theatres' wooden floor was SHAKING. The seats were vibrating like someone had just put 20000 volts through them....it was a uplifting experience! Now whenever i hear this song, i will remember getting a free tush massage that night thanks to the enthusiastic crowd.
'Things Go 'Round' - Joe's introduction to this song was priceless: " This is our acid-karma song. If you have acid, take it nowwww....."
'With Whom You Belong' - The final number of the evening. The Band unplug their instruments and then come to the very front edge of the stage and thank the audience. Joe then says that the last song of the night is about friendship, and they would like their new friends ( the audience) to join in signing with them if they know the words.
He then tells everyone that this is only the second time they have tried this song in this way , so we would have to be quiet to hear them. They then proceeded to play 'With Whom You Belong' completely 'unplugged'...even Jessy the violinist...and the chap who opened the show with his cigar-box guitar.
I have to say it was a very communal vibe...one of those 'light a ligher if you have one' moments. I heard only myself and one other person singing the words out loudly in our center section word for word...and were acknowledged from the stage for this. After a few choruses more of the audience started to sing..until finally most were repearing the chorus. I would love to see a photo of that moment, as the faces of Joe, Ben , and Dhani pretty much said it all. They were beaming.
All artists love to hear their music sung back to them in a situation like that.
It was a fantastic way to close the show. Afterwards they all waved g'bye and thanked everyone again for coming...while Dhani closed his eyes and stood for a moment giving us all a 'Namaste' gesture of thanks. That was lovely...wish i had a photo of that moment. It seemed the experience that evening had meaning to him, and he was grateful for the positive response from everyone.
After playing the cover version of Joe's solo song ( i do not know the name of it..sorry!), Dhani makes a comment from behind the keyboard about thinking the lyrics "nuclear daybreak" were actually 'nuclear date rape". A random moment that provokes some laughter from the other guys, and the audience as well. As Joe tries to set Dhani straight on what the actual REAL lyrics...Ben leans over his mic and utters : " Folks, we have now crossed the line...." which gets a positive cheer from the crowd in attendence. Joe then elaborates on this, trying to see if Ben is now 'in charge of the line'...and when it has been crossed. This then leads to it being turned into a comedy routine about 'the line' in reference to cocaine! The two of them have fun for a few moments joking about it between themselves...while Dhani is still sitting at the keyboard wanting to get on with the show. Joe then turns to Dhani and says: " So Dhani....are YOU 'in charge of the line'? He shakes his head and utters no. Yeah, it was pretty crazy..but funny.
Dhani mentioned about how their new band is being mistaken for a Heavy Metal group because of the 'fist' name. Joe then says they could be, as they ( himself and Ben) are wearing hats. Dhani then comments that Metal groups usually are not known for their hats..but long hair, at which point he holds up his own to display it for them. Ben then says he spent half of his life with a lot of hair ( his old afro hairstyle of yore..) and is going to enjoy the rest of his life without it because 'it is too much a pain in the a**'..
At one point someone in the audience commented on Ben's flourescent lime green shoelaces on his black sneakers, and a lot of jokes were forthcoming about those for the rest of the night. All we needed was a blacklight onstage and we could have had a rave!
Four standing ovations were given by the audience with the final couple of songs performed with people standing..even in the aisle. I was very happy to see this..as they totally deserved the recogniton from the crowd. The first was after the Dylan cover, second was after 'Father's Son' and the third after the end of the show. The Band came out to do a very memorable encore, to which again they were greeted with a standing ovation.
-
And now some random observations from the evening.....
There were four professional photographers in the house that night ( with passes to do so with)..so i am expecting some fantastic photos to be forthcoming. I found that unusual considering the venue and the act being somewhat 'unknown' to the general public. It was nice...and can't wait to find the photos!
We had a very varied crowd show up for the performance, which was great. A MUCH better crowd then the scene was when thenewno2 played in this area last year. There was a nice mix..with lots of older adults, young adults, hippies, teens ( mostly girls their to drool over Dhani..) and a few children even. The two kids i saw were both wearing thenewno2 t-shirts, and looked to be about 5 and 7 years old. The whole family came..as Dad had on his Beatles gear and Mom had on a really awesome tye-dye shirt. I saw a lot of 'alternative' fashions on display that night..which was very cool. It added to the rather festive atmosphere of it all. There were of course some abnoxious people ....some girls dressed a bit extreme having had a bit too much alcohol. At one point during the show set one of them yelled out 'I love you' for the 20th time and the guy sitting in front of said person told em' to give it a rest. She responded with a 'F*** you, a****hole' just as their was a quiet moment during the show when the band were bantering between themselves. I really hope none of them thought it was in response to what they were talking about! Sheesh...some people.
Ben jumped down from the stage at one point between songs to hug someone in the front row. Dhani then commented 'Free Hugs' and a few feisty audience members started asking for theirs in good spirits. Ben also almost fell off his stool laughing during one audience interaction with the Band...that was amusing, and he said he thought so too.
I noticed Dhani seemed to have a concerned look whenever someone would walk down the aisle towards the front seats near the stage. My impression was he was just looking out for any crazy nuts that might be running down to 'attack' him. Thankfully it was not that type of crowd, and everyone respected the Bands' space as they should. He still seemed to shoot a nervous look to anyone hurrying towards the stage however which is completely understandable. There was what looked to be one security guy off to one side of the stage, non-intrusive to the show, but seeing Dhani's expression made me again realize how much the poor man has been through already in his short lifespan thus far. Bless em'.
There was a small selection of merchandise availble before and after the show.
They have TWO NEW t-shirt designs on offer, but sadly did not have the shirt availble on their website ( black Goat Logo shirt). Perhaps this one is only availble with the 'bundle' offers there? I was hoping to purchase one that night...but they either did not offer it or it sold out.
The two shirts they DID have were a ash-grey t-shirt with 'Fistful of Mercy' in large maroon test. Incorporated into the text on one side was the 'Question Mark Goat' image shown in the Bands' liner notes from the album.
Another shirt looked to be a dark blue, with a light blue abstract silloette of their Goat.
There was ALSO a black totebag for sale...which was nice. It looked just like their original black 'Goat' Logo t-shirt.
And of course, CDs for being sold. I am not sure if they had any vinyl copies there..but i did see one person carrying one.
There was a aftershow meet n' greet with the Band, however, it was for people who had the required 'Aftershow' passes.
A fabulous evening ...any way you look at it. If i remember additonal details, i will add them here. When i come across some photos worth sharing from the night..i will post them as well.

I am surprised no one has posted anything related to the shows that have happened over the past few weeks.
For those reading who may not know, Fistful of Mercy has announced they have had to cut the current Euro Tour short due to unforeseen personal reasons.
Both German dates, as well as the Belgian gig have been cancelled.
So sorry to hear this...as our European friends will miss seeing this fantastic live act.
I am sure however that FoM will be BACK in the future.

I don't know who went to what concerts but I will say I certainly enjoyed the concert at the Paradiso yesterday.
3 relaxed guys and a wonderful lady creating beautiful music.
The whole Fistfull of Mercy album, which I only knew for a few days, but it was great hearing it live among other songs by Dhani , Joseph and Ben.
One of the many highlights was the sing along with the audience at the end. A totally acoustic version of " With Whom You Belong".

On December 7 Adri - aka taxgirl, Richard aka Legs and myself saw the concert of Fistful Of Mercy in Amsterdam.
For me it was the first time I saw a Harrison on stage and it was a fabulous experience.
I knew Dhani would sit at the left so we took that side in the small but cosy Paradiso venue and there was an up-step so Adri could stand somewhat higher to have a great view only 3 metres from Dhani. From there Adri could take good pictures and video's which are included.
One can see that Dhani is the leader of the band for instance with the count downs which often a drummer does but they don't have one so in most of the songs Dhani had the organisation.
Often it is said that the band consists of the three guys but in real also the amazing beautiful Jesse Green on violin is a very important part of the band and I saw so much eye contact between Jesse and Dhani.
Ben Harper is the most emotional guy in the band and plays such amazing guitar and sings with so much passion.. He played the guitar in the Pete Drake way but also played several accoustic and electric guitars and one had the Dark Horse logo on it.
Joe Arthur I did not know but he has such a great influence in the band, sits in the middle and has a drumkit at his feet which makes him the Jim Keltner of the band doing percussion with his feet whilst also playing guitar. Quite something.
I also noticed a change in the band from when they started. Then they were an accoustic band just playing accoustic guitars and playing their album. Now they have included personal songs and covers so where it was expected to just last 90 minutes it became a lot longer. Also they now play quite heavy Jimi Hendrix related music all three of them with also Jesse Green contributing her violin sound to it.
Now, there was often a very heavy rock sound where the electric guitars were heavy and what I noticed that they were often just jamming their way through the songs and especially Dhani and Joe were doing these guitar duals just like George did with Eric Clapton on stage.
Also in a few songs Dhani played a normal 6 string electric however as a bass so mainly using the low 4 strings like George did in the Get Back sessions.
The last song they played without microphones just all standing next to eachother in this cosy Paradiso and singing in harmony with simple guitars and violin which was amazing and they made contact with the audience shaking hands for which I was just 10 seconds too late to reach Dhani yet they were all so friendly to the audience.
Here is the setlist

I was going to wait as long to comment as it took you to get up your review, Rob, but I decided to be nice for a change. :devious:
Great review! I can almost imagine being there. Too bad the tour was cut short but at least you guys got to see them.
