So it's World Cup time again. How time flies! It seems like only yesterday when Italy won the trophy after Zidane's red mist. It's a big tournament for the African continent. I really hope that South Africa put it all together nicely and that it's a great month for the fans. The quality of the football isn't always great because club football, especially in Europe, is so tiring and the players are burnt-out by the time the World Cup arrives. Anyway, I hope we see great matches and great players. Any tips on who will win? I can't predict international tournaments at all. I think Brazil have a good chance. France have been written off so I'd watch out for them. Serbia would be my outsiders.

I look forward to this.

I do not agree to what you say about the tiring and burn-out of the European teams.

Sure, many of them individual players have played a large number of matches throughout their seasons but like the Dutch and the Spanish have shown great performances the past weeks.

It will be a great tournament and I will be watching a lot of it with friends.

Looking at the past, it's been pretty much Brazil, Germany, France and italy who won the cup. As Italy won last time I say this time Brazil will win again.

Serbia is also very good, and ofcourse Holland has a good team which is able to show some fantastic football and that can come far. But winning I am afraid not.

Nope. France have only won the world cup once.So they're on the same level as England.
Uruguay and Argentina have both won twice and Argentina may well do it again.
Spain are looking good too.
Brazil are in a difficult group so I think it's dificult to predict for them at this stage.

I'm thrilled that The U.S. wasn't eliminated today! That alone is reason to be happy. I don't have very high expectations.... but maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised to some degree.

USA are a decent team. They've got a few good players and if the bigger teams don't take them seriously (like England last night) they can cause problems.

Serbia did remarkably wel. They can play good but they didn't show it against Ghana so I had little hope for this match against Germany. Holland again tommorow, it should be possible against Japan but you never know.

And I do think every team should play in Bavaria dresses from now on as some kind of protest against Fifa's ridiculous actions.

Holland - Spain

Clark Kent
Jul 08, 2010, 03:36 AM
Holland-Spain. What a nightmare final. I've never liked the Dutch team, especially that thug Van Bommel, who must have videos of all the refs in compromising positions. How else do you explain the fact that he fouls repeatedly but hardly gets booked. On the other hand, you've got the Spanish, who spout self-serving nonsense about their "beautiful" football, aided and abetted by a sycophantic media, even though Italy scored far more goals in getting to the 2006 final. Yet Italy are dull but Spain are geniuses. Also, Spain won all their knockout games 1-0, exactly the same as Germany did in reaching the 2002 final, yet the Germans were boring but Spain are geniuses. This is the first time I don't care who wins the final.

FPSHOT
Jul 08, 2010, 09:10 AM
The Dutch are at their best.

Van Bommel, mister Clark, has been out of the Dutch team for a long time and now is one of the best and he is great in playing refs :teeth1:

In my view the Spanish won Germany because Germany was too arrogant even though according to various specialists they are playing the Dutch way, also because 7 of them play in Bayern Munich directed by my hero Louis Van Gaal.

It's simple, we are the winner Sunday.

Is there some way they can both lose? Spain are just so smug and self-regarding about their so-called beautiful football, yet I don't think they've been great in this World Cup. They lost to Switzerland and were lucky to beat Chile and Paraguay and they have Busquets and Capdevilla, two of the biggest cheats at this World Cup. Then there's the Dutch who are only a slightly less pedestrian version of the Greek team that won Euro 2004. It's been a pretty disappointing World Cup but I'm still glad I was out in South Africa.

Goals, like alcohol, should be consumed responsibly. :laugh5: If there are too many goals in a match, then it becomes a farce. You can have perfectly entertaining matches with few goals. All that being said, this final wasn't one of them. Spain are being held up as masters of beautiful football. This is self-serving nonsense. They have been dull in this World Cup and if they are masters of anything, it is diving, faking injury, getting other players sent-off and chasing refs. Neither side deserved to win.

As to scoring, this game was played very much on the defensive, with both teams being more interested in not allowing opportunities for their opponent than to score (goals that is, although they 'scored' plenty of penalties!), which makes the game boring to watch, I agree.

I didn't mention Baseball because of that very thing - there can be some very low-scoring games. But that's generally an exception. On the other hand, a low-scoring Baseball game often means one of the pitchers is shutting-down the other team and could get a "no-hitter" - which is incredibly exciting to watch/witness. In soccer, it's like, "God, would someone please score and end this game!!!" LOL! All in all, watching Baseball is way more fun than watching soccer, IMO. To each their own!

Admittedly, I have enjoyed watching several World Cup games this year - primarily because it is the big event for that sport, and I mostly enjoy watching the championships of all sports these days. But to watch soccer year-round? :sleep2:

Football is a game that meant to teach patience which bears intense anticipation. There really wouldn't be much of a match if either side were to easily score constantly. I know many Americans do have trouble sitting still for this long, but they can odly make through an entire baseball game. A 3-2 game is sort of the equivalent to a 30-20 American football game.

Funny how hockey carries more popularity in the US when it is nearly the same game, I think people are more interested in seeing a fight than the actually game which is just silly.

Oh, I've been to hockey games and they are tons of fun! And not just for waiting to see if there's a fight (which you can almost count on at least once per game!). Hockey is a fast-paced game with lots of action and drama. Similar to soccer in that there is a net as the goal - but that's about it! Skating on ice gives hockey a more intense and fast-moving quality.

I get it about soccer being a game of patience and all that... and I admitted that I think Americans want to see sports where there is scoring - or at least more of an opportunity/chance at scoring.

Throughout the entire World Cup (as much as I saw of it), I don't think I saw one "break-away" where one player had control of the ball, uncontested by an opposing defenseman, in a show-down with the goalie (which btw often happens in hockey). Seems the goal area is always swarming with players from each team. I am surprised ALL soccer games don't end in 0-0 ties!

ANYWAY.....

Actually there is plenty of fast movement, drama and opportunities of scoring going on in football, hence why games occasionally do end ties. But if you have the attention span of a fruitfly, you are probably not going to catch much of it. But scoring isn't quite as easy to do as in basketball and American football which makes the game more challenging.

If you recap the WC, Germany has shown some good examples of some one-on-one shooting, but yes many of the goals were a team effort and that makes for great teamwork.

The World Cup Final was one of the most exciting games in the tournament and was decided because of 3 failures from the referee, the red card which Iniesta should have got, the corner kick we shouls have had and the offside goal.

Thanks FP, "we Americans" appreciate your critisims, the whole world knows we are nothing but uncreative sissys...

holy moly, what critisism ? Why take it so serious? My goodness...

I have no idea how the US came up in talking about the winner of the World finals, then to throw insults, just seems you were taking snips at the US for what??? We here in the US have our love of some differents professional sports, I didn't see any of us from the US criticizing soccer, at least I did not see any, I also wanted to point out in schools-through college soccer is very big in the US.... Why not take it seriously, you called our full body contact football players sissys, so it's ok for you to be insulting, but not for me to respond back, I didn't see anywhere in your post above where you said you were just kidding .... Perhaps it's the language barrier?

I am not taking snips at all, I was really just kidding and maybe placed the wrong smiley

Quite some Dutch soccer players have played in the US for a few decades already which is also why we here very well know how soccer has grown in the US.

Perhaps it's the language barrier?

Now I could take this remark as an insult but will not do so. You simply misunderstood me, so let's drop it. If you feel you need to take my post as insulting, fine, but it never was intended to be.

I like Paul the octopus. He's awesome. :tongue1:
Congrats to Spain! And our US team for their great effort in the World Cup. I watched the US games and the final game and they were nail biters!

(I love watching American football more, because I've been more exposed to it and it's exciting to watch as well. Football or "soccer" and American football are two totally different animals.)

To be fair the moment before the goal wasn't offside, thus nothing is wrong with Spain's goal. So congrats to them, and now onwards the Euro cup.

Whilst watching the game Live it seemed to be offside but I have seen now that it wasn't.

Spain was the best and it's a pity how the Dutch played so aggressive.

It's obvious that many Americans do not know much about the original and normal football, which is fine, they have their American Football where the players look like astronauts ready for Mars with all that stuff on, sissies (Oh when I fall I need protection to not get hurt). :eyebrows:

The World Cup Final was one of the most exciting games in the tournament and was decided because of 3 failures from the referee, the red card which Iniesta should have got, the corner kick we shouls have had and the offside goal.

A shame, but still congrats to Spain , they also were great.

The ref did make a massive blunder at one point but it woudn't have changed the final outcome..And you forgot about all the brutality and yellow cards here on the part of the Dutch players..

Is De Jong a chinese name or something?! :P :laugh5: That was some wicked Kung fu.. In a soccer match not a karate tournament..

Still a thrilling game..i believe all the over the top protection in Gridiron matches is more about protecting the players from each other..more matches like the world cup final and pretty soon ALL footballers will be done up in spacesuits..

May i also point out that New Zealand remains the only team to remain undefeated in the tournament! True!!

It largely worked too! If Rodden had got in that ball who knows what had happened? But that's life.

I don't believe anyone would have predicted the outcome of Group F to be like it is.

As for the Dutch, yeah our midfielders went over the top.

De Jong is no Chinese name :teeth1: but if that Spanish player would not have been in the way nothing would have happened :devious:

Bitterly dissapointed with the way the Dutch chose to play in the final, they are a much better team than that. I have to say the best team won, and yes they are as guilty as anyone for theatricals, but for the some reason, the Dutch chose confrontation, and I feel that Howard Webb tried his hardest not to send anyone off, but events meant he had no option.

The team of the tournement for me were the USA, they have come on in leaps and bounds since the days of Best, Marsh, and Beckenbauer trying to show them how its done, and lets not forget the penalty miss in the dying seconds that could have meant that Ghana would have progressed instead of Uraguay.

But there again Uraguay had one of the stars of the whole show in Diego Forlan, all I know is that I will be 4 years older by the time the next tournement comes around (well hopefully).

No question, bad sportsmanship all round..the dutch need to learn some manners, they let themselves down...that "Kung fu' kick was shocking and completly uncalled for and not an accident either..

bit like the italians taking all those dives..some people will do anything to win

Glad that the better team with the most integrity won on the day!! who said "good guys never win?" sometimes they do..
