Kula Shaker, Dylan, Bowie (mmmmm Bowie!!)
lots of sixties bands, Kula Shaker, oh and I really like Kula Shaker!

Other stuff Brett listens to (probably not indicative at all of other Beatle fans I guess):

Van Halen (Obsessed fan for almost 20 years now)
Led Zeppelin
Alice In Chains
Metallica (when they were good, say 1986)
The Who
Iron Maiden (as of late, been rediscovering them)

Lots of other stuff, those just came to my mind first. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

Van Halen is my main obsession, and really the only band I follow outside of studio recordings. Other favorites are the Who, the Stones, Counting Crows, Black Crowes, Jackson Browne, Guns n' Roses.

Really? I suppose they could have been, who knows, but all I can say is that I saw them live in Dublin about 2 years ago, and they were superb. I havent felt emotion in music like that since The Beatles. When I am feeling down, I put on 'Shower Your Love' and I immediately feel happy, it is purely an emotional response, I have always responded that way to music, very often not even knowing the lyrics. There ya go, different strokes eh?

I have a wide range of other artists that I'll listen to from time to time. Some of them are:

Led Zepplin
The Monkees
Barry Manilow
Kansas
Kiss
Klaatu
Carpenters
ZZ Top
America
Boston
The Doors

But there is one genre of "music" I do not like is Rap. (Yesterday, I was forced to listen to some. It came from someone in a Jeep 5 miles away!)

Well, the only thing that comes close to The Beatles for me is Jimi Hendrix. I'm obsessed with collecting every live performance that exists. In fact, I still might start up a Hendrix links page one of these days. But I would have to quit my job to keep up with both sites.http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/wink.gif

Hi y'all;

I was just thinking about what it is that makes the Beatles so special for me, and came to realize that it's the emotional power that the songs hold. So I thought I'd ask: What OTHER bands have the power to make us elated, sad, laugh and cry, etc. ?

I'll start. Besides the Fab Four, there's:
* Pink Floyd
* The Velvet Underground/Lou Reed
* Christine Lavin
* Suzanne Vega

Anyone?

Oh, man, what a can of worms you've opened now http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

Lessee, how about Chicago, Van Halen, John Cougar, the Police, the Everly Brothers, the Big Bopper, Strawberry Alarm Clock, Prince, Kenny Rogers, REO Speedwagon, ELO, ...

Oh, I pretty much like a lot of 'em, and almost all of them have at least one tune that's special for me http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

No rap, save the classical for when I'm in the mood, but you can always hit me in a good mood with some Glenn Miller or Booker T and the MGs...

I'm pretty much lost in the '60s:

Grateful Dead
The Who
Led Zeppelin
Rolling Stones (pre mid 70s)

The only post 70s performer that I really like is Tom Petty.

Well Led Zeppelin isn't really a 60's band, considering 90% of their career spanned the decade of the 70's.

So, use these other miraculous methods of communication, and keep your private chat away from this forum. Thank you!

Beatlegirl, I love you too! But, you have to realize that you are not the only one to get "yelled at" about chatting about non-beatle things. I realize that this was a place to dicuss other bands we like, but when you and Jodie began talking about the concert and how it was and what drugs everyone was doing, that was discussion that should not be done here. None of us can share your experience, so by discussing things we cannot contribute to, we all feel excluded.

As I said before, you are not the only one to get "yelled at". In another post, bearkat and I were discussing a book that had nothing to do with Beatles. So, Pat nicely informed us how that was a subject to be discussed elsewhere. Also, when posting in a topic, we all began to dicuss sesame street and what it has to do with the beatles. Now this was fine, except that the name of the discussion was deceiving. People would go into the topic expecting to read about one thing, and would end up hearing about sesame street. So, Pat (she's such a good moderator!) closed the topic and asked us to open another topic about sesame street in which the name would not be so deceiving. This is kind of what happened here. People come into this topic expecting to read about other bands we like, and end up hearing about some concert. I'm really not trying to be mean or anything, I just want you to understand why we get mad when you and others discuss things that are meant to be dicussed over the phone, through e-mail, etc. We don't have anything against you, at least I don't. I'm just trying to do my job as a moderator and keep everyone happy. Thank you!

I think you can like a variety of music. I do. To like Marilyn Manson, Blink 182, Nsync and the Beatles isn't weird. The music people like is based on their moods or what they are exposed to. (This is based on my experience) I like music from the Beatles, to Metallica, to Madonna to Classical music, Swing Music and so on. People have different tastes. It's like movies. You can like differen type of movies and people won't think youre weird, so why should it be different with music? Just because music has a much more wide variety than movies do.

Before i go and leave my monthly list i will just say this: music serves to bring peeple together not apart. its kinda sad that people are so segragated because of
"oh i only listen to like pop"

"pop sucks. heavy metal forever"

"nah man rap is dope if you dont feel it, you wack"

"modern music is horrible, the lyrics mean nothing, the melodies are dumb. when i was your age..."

and so on and so on.
see if everyone was like me we'd all get along so spread yourself out a bit, try new or different music. It may be harsh on the ear drums, but its good for the soul.

Please let me add Sting and The Police to my list. And I don't like them physically either... http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/wink.gif

I don't know about Nirvana, beatledork/Kurt or whoever you really are. What really bothered me was what you said about Ringo. Ringo is indeed a great artist that diserves to be in any Hall of Fame that recognizes the music of the 20th Century.

And I really don't care what everybody else thinks about Nirvana.

I don't know and I really don't care if they do or do not belong to that Hall of Fame because I can't listen to every music that comes into my ears. Plus, if you review the topic, I never said that Nirvana didn't diserve to get into the Hall of Fame, although 25 years of history are needed, like bearkat stated before. I'm still bothered at what you said about Ringo, that's my problem and probably what you missed.

Plus, I'm not in here to discuss Nirvana, but to share my opinions and thoughts about The Beatles. I think I've never gotten out of that.

I took my daughter to see Weezer (Troubadour in West Hollywood last year we were on vacation visiting my sister who lives in San Diego) and was totally impressed with how good they are. A really good band.

She started in Ocean
Beach, but has been living in Lakeside for a long time now, the next town over from where the high school shootings took place. I lived in Point Loma for 3 years 79-81. I love San Diego and visit every other year, and sis visits Jersey every other year.

Oh my GOD! Onothimagen - I have ALL (three!) of their albums and am personally acquainted with them! I could probably help you find their CD's if you're interested. I'm just SO amazed to hear of anybody else who's ever even HEARD of them....I used to see them every weekend in the early 90's!

I'm a sucker for Beatles sound-alike bands, such as the Spongetones and Pleasers. I love so-called Classic Rock (Rolling Stones, Doors, CCR, Deep Purple, etc.) Lot's of 80's music, like Translator, Replacements, Chameleons, etc. Jangle-pop stuff like Guadalcanal Diary, Windbreakers, early REM. 60's/70's Soul, definitely! Australia has many great bands I love, such as Hoodoo Gurus, The Church, Screaming Tribesmen, DM3. Even love easy listening, Sinatra, Goldsboro, Nat Cole. Traditional Country is on my playlist right now. Like some Megadeth, any hard Rock/Metal with a good melody and great guitar riff. Heck, any kind of music with a melody is what listen to. As for Rap, let's just say it's not in my collection!

I have a Spongetones LP. It's "Torn Apart". I never knew they were considered Beatle-soundalikes since I've never played it. Do you think I should give it a whirl to hear for myself?

Oh yeah, I've known about the Spongetones basically since they put out their first record. "Beat Music" is an incredible debut; You can get it on CD (along with their mini-lp "Torn Apart") but it may cost you over $20 as it is out of print. As always, eBay may be the easy route to find it but you just never know how these auctions wind up. On a slightly different note, The Rutles' soundtrack "All You Need Is Cash" is another great Beatles sound-alike! Of course, it is a parody of The Beatles history but the music is good in itself. The melodies are kind of twisted around so that it sounds familiar but different enough to stand on their own, at least IMHO! The film is available on DVD, by the way, and is a treat for your eyes and ears. Budget-priced too!

Go Weezer!

Rivers says in the new Rolling Stone that the mistake he made was that he thought they were a serious band. I love that.

It's a drag when bands take themselves too seriously.
