This set is the best of the three. For most fans this will be the most interesting volume. The interviews that are included are worthwile, and ones you will want to listen to more. But there is also more music.Lets have a look at what we can find.
The first disc begins with a mix of "When I'm Sixty Four". It's almost the same as the released version, but they gave it a remix.
Takes 7 and 26 of "Strawberry Fields are included. Take 26 is among my favourites, with the full orchestra. This one has John's vocals, there is also an instrumental version not on this cd.
We got a mono mix for "Penny Lane" and a full oboe version. The Anthology has a combination of the oboe version and the U.S. mono mix.
Vigotone used the "Penny Lane" and "Strawberry Fields" versions for their "Turn Me On Dead Man" bootleg.
"It's All To Much" is the complete version of the song, to be found on other boots, but you guessed it with better sound.
The highlight is the "Sgt Pepper" special, Where It's At, for the BBC. On this program you can hear the Beatles presenting tracks from the Sgt. Peppers album. "A Day In The Life" is the only track not being played, because of a ban by the BBC. It's a great trip back in time.
The Beatles won 3 Ivor Novello Awards in 1967, the presentation of these can be heard here for the first time.
Disc 2 is great, after we have Ringo saying goodbey to Radio London, who was taken off the air. We have the comple satellite broadcast of "All You Need Is Love". Not sure if this has ever been on another bootleg, at least it is the first time I heard it..You can hear the presenter introducing the Beatles, giving a bit of info. The song is being played in full, with the orchestra breaking down at the end.
Remix RM11 of take 58 has been released before, but it is nice to have the two together. It's basicly the same as the version mentioned before, but it cuts off and has some additional vocals.
"Your Mother Should Know" is supose to be take 1, but since it is the same one as on Acetates, which isn't take 1, you can pick any number you like. Anyway we had this one before and the sound isn't better nor is the song longer.
"Blue Jay Way" is from the Magical Mystery Tour movie, and "I am The Walrus" is the longest complete version.
The highlight of disc 2 is the The David Frost Show, with John and George from 4 October 1967.
They talk about the marahishi, meditation and religion. They stand their ground before a critiguel audience, of so called experts.Interesting show and a real adition to anyone's beatleg colection.
Also we can find the longest and clearest version of "All Together On The Wireless Machine".
Disc 3 starts of with take 8 of "Across The Universe" which is the same as on Past Maters 2 but without the Wildlife effects.
"Hey Bulldog" comes from the "Yellow Submarine" film, and is just annoying with all the barking over it. I don't understand the inclusion of it, for listening pleasure you take the official cd, and to view the clip you watch the DvD, oh well.
Kenny Everett tries to interview John, without succes. This is the complete show on which John sings the song "Cottonfields"
"Ob La Di, Ob La Da" take 5 has been released on other bootlegs. I have it on "The Alternate Versions" 2. This rejected version is based on acoustic guitar rather then piano.
"While My Guitar Gently Weeps" take 1 has been released many, many times before. The people of Yellow Dog themselves has released this complete and clear version on their Fanthology bootleg.
Another David Frost show, this one with John and Yoko. It's great to hear John, at the end of the show "Hey Jude" is being played through the studio speakers, in typical John Lennon style he begins to sing along, and urges the public to join.
"Step Inside Love" and "Los Paranoias" were combined together on Anthology, here they are separate and complete. "The Way You Look Tonight" and the hidden white album track "Can You Take Me Back", are the last songs. This part has also been used by Vigotone "Turn Me On Dead Man".
Cd 3 ends with the White album, radio Luxembourgh interview, 20 November 1968, with Paul McCartney. Not sure wheter this has been released before, but it's nice to have.
Disc 4 starts with some more mixes of White Album songs. Some mono mixes, nothing really new.
The songs from the "Get Back" sessions sounds great, I can never be to sure what has been released before or not, but the way it is presented on this cd it's very listenable.
The cd has two great versions of "Old Brown Shoe", with great sound.
George's "How Do You Tell Someone" has been liften again from another bootleg.
Also two versions of "Teddy Boy" are included, one mixed by Glyn Johns and another is a mix by Phil Spector.
The Abbey Road medley, on which the songs has been compiled diferently, "Her Majesty" in between "Mean Mr. Mustard" and "Polythene Pam"
has been released before, but again the sound quality is better.
"All Things Must Pass" "Old Brown Shoe" and "Come and Get It" are session mixes, they got new mixes for Anthology 3.
The last cd is a nice cd to listen to, but many tracks are lifted from other bootlegs.
To give a final conclusion, if you don't want to get lost in many interviews or not listenable live recordings, you're better off buying Vigotones "Turn Me On Dead Man".
There are many unigue live recordings and interviews on this set, but in the case of the Essen concert, just because something is unigue doesn't mean it should be released, unless you want to hear just screaming fans. Also the people of Yellow Dog, this time through Strawberry records have learned how to get money from fans. Take some interesting and unigue recordings, that could have fit on one or two double cd's, and release them instead on 11 cd-s together with many tracks that were already know.Sure most of them come in better sound quality, but I am sure that given time they will release them again with even better sound quality so when will it stop.
If you want to be complete, see if you can get it through a trade, like I did! Obviously I can't comment on the artwork inside of the boxset.
Finally the cd-r bootleg label Angry Dog (not related to Yellow Dog) has released 3 double cd-s with Highlights from the Anthology.
