View Full Version : My Lost Lennon Tapes

Remember the radio show "the Lost Lennon tapes?" Well, when I was 15 years old or so, I taped every show I could, thinking I could sort of have it as a bootleg without spending the money. These recordings I made were on cassette tapes and I always wished they were on cd when cds became popular. To make a long story short, I still have those tapes and I'm in the process of transfering them to cd. The first cd I made sounds great. The voice of Elliot Mintz is somewhat distorted, but that's because radio uses a lot of compression.
My question to everyone is, I would like to know how these recordings compare to the bootlege series "the Lost Lennon tapes". I am willing to send, for free, a copy of this recording to get feedback and I you have a copy of one of these series, you can tell me the difference between the two. I have never heard the series copies. Better yet, if someone has a cd of this series, we can trade. I can only make a few copies, so I will only take the first few request.
You can contact me via e-mail (rojas1970@hotmail.com) and we can work something out.

Are the Lost Lennon Tapes cds the same as the Lost Lennon Tapes vinyls? b/c I have a couple of those, although one got stolen (has a moment of silence for the lost record). Just wondering, while we're on the subject. ^_^

Welcome to links Teddyboy!
As far as the Lost Lennon Tapes goes. There are two series, both are avaiable on cd.Bag originally released the Lost Lennon Tapes on vinyl, they later re-released the set on cd, so I asume they are the same. Then there is the series by Walrus records, called "The complete lost Lennon tapes".
For the most part this series is also the same as the Lp set, on later volumes however Walrus added some songs that weren't on the original lp set.
So in short, both cd-s set and the lp set are more or less the same.I've got the complete Walrus set, but since JulianTheory replied first you two can work something out first. Especially since he is from the states and I live in Europe it might be easier to trade.
It's intersting to have these tapes btw. Make sure to be carefull of them.
Also welcome to the forum Julian, haven't "seen" you before.

Thanks for the info Legs, that really help.
What I am also interested in is how the tracks are divided. Do the cds make up parts of different shows, or is it one long show, like I have? BTW, back then, I was trying to be careful not to record commercials because the tapes were 90 min (45 on each side) and the show lasted an hour. So there may be parts where I didn't hit unpause before the show came back.

The LPs and the CDs contained just the songs. I don't think I ever heard any announcing or anything else. They most likely didn't follow the actual shows at all. Some of the LPs had themes, like all demos or all studio outtakes or whatever.
Here's a link to the Walrus Records CDs, I would definitely go with them over anything else...

That's interesting about the cds having only the songs. These recordings are, like I said, are straight through. So you have Elliot Mintz talking about the recordings and you have Lennon interviews. The shows also have themes, but it's not all bootleges. They give you a few demos, then play you the original recording. So for a 45 min tape, you may get 5 songs that are not boots.

Wow Teddy, you've really got something there. You may find this tracklisting of sorts valueable:
http://www.angelfire.com/music3/BeatlesTapes/llt.html
There are copies of the entire radio broadcast circulating (over 200 CDs). However, acquiring it is like climbing a mountain. You are really lucky Teddy!
I just have all the songs on 3 CD-ROMs, but normally its like 22 discs or something. I'd love to just hear some of the radio stuff.

Thanks for the link onosideboards ! That will help a lot when I'm putting a track licting on the cd covers.
I don't think this will end up being 200 cds, so I guess I didn't record them all, but I still have a few.

Alright,
I've posted a sample of the radio series that I put on cd. It's about 4 MB. Check it out.
The Radio Lost Lennon Tapes (http://www.sanchowear.com/lennon)
Pay no attention to the domain name, I using a friends. hehe
So far, only one taker of the free cd (that's you Legs). Again, I really want to just have people listen to these tapes on cd. If they want to trade, that's a plus, but there is no obligation.

The first two volumes I am going to send, (re email me your address please) contains the first three bag lp's. Which in turn contains the following shows, note that the shows and songs are not in order of which they were aired, but mixed together.
First lp: The first five shows: dates January 25th, February the first, 8 and 22nd 1988.
Second lp: February 29th. March 7th 14 and 28th. of March 1988.
Third lp: Contains odly songs from the introduction show from the 24th of January, and shows from: April the 4th 11 and 18th.
The mp3 you put up is intersting, cause it adds the interviews, and talking about the songs which aren't on the bootlegs.

Thanks again for the cd-s Teddy. Although the songs are released by Walrus and Bag records on their Lost Lennon Tapes series. You do also get some of the official songs, so it's understandable that the bootlegers didn't include those on their series, but it's great to hear the actual radio broadcasts. Most of the interviews were edited out on the bootlegs also, but it's what makes the radio broadcast more interesting.
