(Thanks to a column from our Bob Dylan Examiner Harold Lepidus, we've learned that the great Leon Russell is recovering from brain surgery.)

Here's a statement from Leon's website:

Leon is recovering after successful surgery on Monday to relieve a chronic condition. He is doing fine and resting in the hospital in good condition. He is expected to be released from the hospital in a few days.

Leon is looking forward to beginning studio recording sessions during the last half of this month through February with Elton John, Bernie Taupin and T-Bone Burnett. He and his band will resume touring at the beginning of March.

Leon and his family wish to thank everyone who have kindly offered their prayers and support during his hospital stay.

Leon Russell was a well-known name before he was introduced to Beatle fans. He was an integral part of Phil Spector's Wall of Sound sessions. He stopped the show during the Concert for Bangladesh (see above) with his great medley of "Jumpin' Jack Flash" and "Youngblood." In concert, he was incredibly exciting, performing as a cornerstone of Mad Dogs and Englishmen with Joe Cocker (if you haven't seen the movie, we recommend it. It's wonderful), and later headlining his own solo shows. And that's a woefully short list.

We saw Leon headline a Day on the Green in the '70s at the-then Oakland Coliseum. He was fantastic.

Our best wishes to you, Leon

This is particularly sad because I'm reading "Miss O'Dell" right now...
