I see that a couple of years ago Cilla's version was finally released (on a compilation) many years after that actual recording had first been undertaken.

Apprently, they reworked the orginal mid 1970's recording she'd made of it...

Did George play on it ?

The story I have is as follows;

George seems to originally have written "The Light That Has Lighted The World" for Cilla however with different lyrics and a different title "The Light That Lights Up The World" Not sure how accurate this is.

In August 72 there was a session at Friar Park where they recorded two songs, "I'll Still Love You" and "You Got To Stay With Me".

George produced it and played rhythm guitar, Eric Clapton lead guitar, Klaus on bass and Ringo on drums.

The sessions were not completed because Cilla just came from the dentist so the recording of her vocals were not succesfull.

George kept the tapes at Friar Park and years later in 1982 George and Cilla bumped into each other in e vegetarian restaurant and decided to finish the recording.

George writes in I Me Mine (got the title this time! :teeth1:) that When Every Song Is Sung was first called Whenever and the first line came by itself after he got the chord sequence. Also that he'd tried to record it with several people, Cilla among them, but it never got finished. In fact, he was producing it as a single for her but for some unspecified reason the project was abandoned. Nothing about whether he played on it himself or not. Sorry not to have more information.

The reason given, as to why they were not able to complete the recording when they first went at it, was that Cilla had just come in from a dentist appointment and was not able to do the vocal properly because of that...

I just picked up my coppy of that Cilla compilation and the inlay says recorded circa 1975 . produced and arranged by David MacKay . It does not sound like George is here .

Thanks, that's what I wanted to know !

How would you rate her version, compared to Ringo's ?

I must tell you that i like Ringo s version best. The reason is that Lon van Eaton did a beautiful Harrison inspired guitar in the song . So for me it s still a George song.
Cilla s version is nice though . And i am glad she did put it out after some years .

Indeed he did... heck, when I first heard the song, I just assumed that it was George playing that...

... then I looked at the album credits (LOL) !

Anyhow, I always assumed Ringo's version was better than Cilla's... just because it's THAT good (lovely arrangement and vocal by Ringo).

The only reason I'd enquired about Cilla's was in case George had actually played lead guitar "a la Van Eaton" on it, especially as it was one of his own songs... so to speak.

I add the mp3 file to this post for you all to have.

It's clear that this is not a Harrison production and indeed it does not sound like George is on this.

So what I wrote before, which comes from a Bill Harry book, might have happened, but is not the song which is on this Cilla Black album.

However, if I would choose which one I love more, I would go for the Cilla Black version, the feeling she puts in it it exactly what I believe the song was meant to say/do when George wrote it.

I might as well add a George demo of the song from the All Things Must Pass sessions.

There are various but this is one of the better ones.

Enjoy.
