Ono's insecurity

Yoko Ono grew up so insecure about her looks, husband John Lennon had to constantly reassure her about her beauty.

The Japanese performer claims she inherited her father's bone structure and always felt she had more masculine than feminine features.

She reveals, "All my life my mother told me that I had strong jaws like a guy. It was not womanly. Well, I got them from my father, I think. So yes, I won’t say I am particularly feminine."

Ono reveals that Lennon fought to boost her self-esteem during their marriage, adding, "I used to hide my jaws with my long hair. John used to say, 'Show me your face!' and took my hair out of my face. 'Look, you’re beautiful. I don’t know why you are hiding with your hair.' I kept myself hidden."

But she does admit the Beatle had an unkind nickname for her, to poke fun at her odd physique: "My head was unusually large for my small body. So John called me a Martian."

I feel a lot like Yoko did, but not about masculine features, just being insecure. She might be a great self-esteem coach, since she's been there.

I read that somewhere, I thought the nickname was kind of amusing... I never really noticed whether her head was too big for her body or not. I can relate to her because I have some self esteem problems as well. I am glad John fought to boost her self esteem.

Ocean Child. Such a pretty name for a Martian...

I can see that her head is a little wider than average, but it's not unbeautiful at all. I've always thought that Yoko was a very attractive lady. Her looks have never been a part of any problems I might have had with her.

You obviously have never seen the cover of Two Virgins. Either side.

Oh yes I have. My concept of feminine beauty has never been limited to admiring a woman who matches the image of an air-brushed pop diva or a bikini model.

While I've never spent hours gawking at John and Yoko's Two Virgins photos, I have seen them enough to know what Yoko looked like as a young nude, and I think she was beautiful in her own way.

Hey, I hide my face with my hair too. Funny, I felt extra ugly today and I read this.

Asiatic people in general have a larger head to body ratio (1/6, I believe) to Indo-European (1/7 - 1/8) so it's not just Yoko anyway. Whether true or not, it does affect a person's self esteem when constantly told, particularly by a parent, that he/she doesn't measure up in one way or another. I don't find her ugly.

I never thought Yoko had a disproportionately large head. She always looked okay to me.

Except I didn't like the crewcut in the early 1970s. I really didn't like that at all.

Wow, I can really relate. There have been times when I've felt my face doesn't look really feminine.

Maybe part of Yoko's insecurites were the inspiration behind John's "Woman is the n***** of the world".
