Simon Cowell blasts Beatles
Music mogul Simon Cowell wouldn't have signed The Beatles unless they fired drummer Ringo Starr.

Simon Cowell has blasted The Beatles, claiming they would have failed auditions on 'The X Factor'.
The music mogul - who once rejected the Spice Girls, the best-selling girl group of all time - says he would have kicked the iconic band off his British TV talent show unless they fired drummer Ringo Starr.
The 49-year-old star said: "If The Beatles came on the show we would have said, 'We'll take those three - Paul McCartney, John Lennon and George Harrison - but probably lose the drummer.'
"With Ringo, I'm afraid, we would have said 'bad news'."

Geesh! Do you think he would have said the same thing if Pete Best were the drummer? Hello, Simon?! Ringo replaced Pete for better drumming!

It just goes to show what a self-important, arrogant ignoramus he is. Ringo was perfect for that particular band. Simon is probably one of those people who never could master "Chopsticks" on the piano and now gets to criticize at will.

Ask me if at all I care what Simon thinks. Din't he think Susan Boyle was a waste of his time at first?

In other words, "If the Beatles had auditioned for the show, we totally would've taken them, but anyone with half-a-brain realizes that, so I'll say that we wouldn't have just to get some press."

Isn't it kind of odd for a judge of a talent show to be proud of his inability to recognizing talent?

Lol!
Well, I guess you can change the old adage to "Those who can, do. Those who can't, host reality shows!"

I guess that's Simon for you, petty criticism has always been his launch for eminence. I stop paying attention to him a long time ago.

He judges a karaoke contest. That hardly qualifies him to make a call like that.

Simon formed a band called Il Devo (or something like that). They suck.

He apparently now says his statement was "just a joke".
"In a statement sent to RadarOnline, Cowell said, “Regarding my comments on the Beatles, it was a joke. I have always said they were the group I have always wished I had signed."
The comment that got him in hot water was in answer to a question by Amanda Holden, a judge on "Britain's Got Talent." She asked him, "If the Beatles came on Britain's 'Got Talent' or 'American Idol,' do you think you would have put them through to bootcamp?"
“We'll take those three – Paul McCartney, John Lennon and George Harrison, but you'd probably have to lose the drummer. With Ringo around, I'm afraid we would have said 'bad news',” he said.
Actually, the bad news was the fury his remarks caused. They didn't seem to agree with what Simon said."

One could argue that even George Martin wasn't to sure about Ringo at first. However that was decaded ago, by now it must be clear how good Ringo as a drummer is. Well respected among his coleage drummers also. So what excuse does Simon have?

Ringo Starr is much more loved than simon; who is just an lazy critic of about everything.

Hmm. Well, I guess it's Simon's opinion against the opinion of 50 million other fans! Doesn't change my view of Ringo. To me he's still the best the group could've had.
Also, with the Beatles, their success wasn't solely on their musical ability. They made it so big because of the chemistry they had as a group, and Ringo was a part of that.

I'm with Lizzy on this one.
The Beatles without any one of their members would be like Chrysler without Dodge; the American League without the Red Sox (Go, BOSTON!); the cone without the ice cream; California without the Bay Area, well, you get the idea.
Simon is entitled to his opinion. We're entitled to ours. We can amicably agree to disagree. Simple as that. :smile1:

This is a show that had a judge that was tone-deaf. This kind of comment doesn't surprise me. I'll bet you anything if Buddy Holly and Elvis Costello won, they would have told them to lose their geeky glasses.

I like their glasses!
And having a tone-deaf judge says a lot about whoever chose that judge in the first place. That tells me the standards weren't very high to begin with.

Who will remember Simon-friggin'-Cowell in 50 years?
Who will remember Ringo in 50 years?
Need I say more.

Amen to that. Wonder if we would've said anything like that if this show was pre-MTV. Just imagine all the groups and artists he would've passed on based on marketable image...
