I just re listened to the Anthology 1 and 2 cd's and I always was dissapointed with the fact that they didn't use complete takes for some songs but that they mixed takes together. Now I listened to it again and imo some of these edits are badly done
Like "Yes It Is" on Anthology 1, it starts with an early take, but then you can cleary hear the crosfade with the official take.
For "A Day In The Life" they used bits of take 1 and 2 and on the end an crossfade with the orchestral overdubs, but I really hoped for the complete take 1,or at least take 2 but I have that one on bootleg.
Same with Penny Lane and Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds.
I feel like they created some new mixes not real 60's outtakes.

What's your (out)take on this?

I agree 100%, Legs!! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/angry9.gif

I thought the crossfade from the outtake to the finished take of "Yes It Is" was completely pointless (especially considering how that particular outtake really ends--with John breaking yet another guitar string and saying, "The strrring brrroke! D'ja 'ear it?" Would have been much more interesting to hear, IMHO!!) BTW, the complete version of that particular outtake is on an "Unsurpassed Masters" CD on the Yellow Dog label--not quite sure which one, as I don't have it in front of me at the moment.

I was also EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED that they edited out the backing vocals from "Strawberry Fields Forever", take 1, for no apparent reason!!! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/confused.gif (Also can be found w/ backing vocals intact on an "Unsurpassed Masters" CD.)

I also can't figure out why they faded out "You Know My Name" early!! GRRRRR!!! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/angry11.gif

My opinion is that any track on Anthology that was edited completely sucks. Why would we want to hear a nice outtake of a song spliced together with it's real ending? How lame. They did this to several of the tracks, and it annoys me every time I listen to them. I think they left most of the later tracks alone, but several of the earlier outtakes are just butchered up beyond comprehension.

Yeah, how could I forget SFF??? To take out those completely beautiful harmonies was one of the worst decisions ever made, second only to releasing the butcher cover and thinking people weren't gonna be offended.

HUH???!!! Was that supposed to sound "dramatic" or something??!! It's not even from the same damn era!!! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/angry8.gif

For the record, my idea on how to end "Anthology 3" was this: After the end of "The End", there should have been a 20-second pause, and then they should have played the complete take of "Her Majesty" with the missing guitar note at the end and NOT LIST IT ON THE COVER OR BOOKLET--A "HIDDEN" TRACK ALA THE ORIGINAL RELEASE OF "ABBEY ROAD"--GET IT?? COOL, HUH??!!

Of course, Capitol Records refused to use my idea! HMMMPH!! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/angry3.gif

The second Unsurpassed Masters cd has takes 1 and 2 of Yes It Is.
I don't have the set nor these two takes, so it really is a disapointment that they didn't include the full version.
The version of Strawberry Fields with the backing vocal is really beautiful, I have it on the Alternate versions vol. 2. A compilation set of 2 cd's. I have it also on "It's Not To Bad" which got almost every demo, alternates of Strawbery Fields.

On Anthology 3 I believe they only mixed two versions of Teddy Boy together.

There are definitely more takes available of Yes It Is. I think the first 9. I had it all on the radio broadcast once.

And yes, all of the edits on the Anthology are pretty useless to purists because it leaves you wondering what the actual take sounds like.

On the Ultimate Collection box set, box #3 The studio sessions 1965 - 1966 there are the first 11 takes and take 14.Which I believe is the official version but then with a longer intro and with some overdubs missing, at least I have that version but I don't have the boxset, but I think it's that one anyway.

There's...there's...there's a BACKING VOCAL on that take of "Strawberry Fields"?!?!? And they EDITED IT OUT?!? Why on earth did they do that?!?! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/angry2.gif I'm not sure I want to know what else I'm missing!

I agree about the "Yes It Is" edit, too. If they wanted to include a complete take, why not use Take 1 instead? I wonder if they thought the original song is so obscure, no one would know what the released version sounded like? http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/wink1.gif (To be honest, I had never heard the song before the Anthology set came out!)

The backing vocals on Take 1 of SFF are in my opinion some of the best they ever recorded. Which just makes it that much worst that they were edited out on the official Anthology release. Yes It Is and Because and This Boy are some of my favorites, but every time I hear that 10 seconds or so of sweet harmonies on SFF, it's a whole new ballgame. Once I figure out this new sound file editor thing I have, I can e-mail it to whoever is interested.

Jerry have you got the chance to arange this, forgot to ask this earlier cause otherwise I can upload this version of Strawberry Fields to my homepage, there's still some room for Mp3's left. And I'm planning to rotate these Mp3's once in awhile, just hope that people are intersted in this.

Some are OK.
Apple was,IMO,trying to make a package for general fans as well as we anoraks (i.e. the hardcore fanatics who collect bootlegs).
Also, all of the "Sessions" 1985 mixes were used for Anthology.

Maybe but no-one, neither the casual nor the die hard fans wants to hear created outtakes. The real takes would have been better in any case.

I just wish the backing vocals had been used in more verses of the song. I don't understand why they used an edited take for "Anthology!" graemlins/angry9.gif

Good topic - I was furious with the butchery jobs of "Yes it is" & "12-bar original" on anthology 2 - I'd have rather had 2 versions of "Yes it is" than "Yesterday"....even though by vol.2 they'd realised that the speech excerpts were a bad idea, and the exclusion of the backing vocals on "Strawberry fields" just rubbed my nose in the cranberry sauce, and the bits chopped out of "You know my name" wound me up the wrong way, and "A day in the life" WITHOUT the final chord??....hel-lo???
moan, moan, moan......ah well..........
