Sad news this morning...Doctor Ebbetts, has announced his retirement with immediate effect...here's the relevant secyion from his e mail...

Quote:
There has been considerable buzz surrounding the new Beatles
remasters, due for release in September. There should be. We have all
been waiting for this day, and it is about to arrive - finally! Thanks
to a long-time supporter and friend to this project, I have had the
opportunity to hear genuine samples of the new remasters due out in two
months.

They are good.

Very good.

Those of you who will be buying them - and those of you who have already
preordered - will not be disappointed.

In fact, I will venture to guess than many of you will be more than
pleasantly surprised at how good they sound.

And with what promises to be outstanding packaging all around, it will
be a collector's nirvana.

From the outset of the Dr. Ebbetts Sound Systems project, I swore that
once EMI did the right thing and released remasters to be proud of, I
would not continue doing what I was doing. After all, the only reason I
did this was because Apple/EMI/Capitol would not - and because I so very
much love the Beatles.

While my love for the band has not changed, everything else has.

EMI/Capitol began their release of the American LPs on compact disc a
few years ago, and now EMI has tackled the British catalogue in fullest
detail.

It's what we all wanted. As Beatles fans, it's what we've prayed for.

To that end - and with the heaviest of hearts - effective immediately,
Dr. Ebbetts Sound Systems will cease operations.

Well, I am sorry, but I can't call this 'sad news'...! This is the best news I've heard concerning the remasters yet!!! I have all Ebbetts cd's and I don't listen to anything else, but yes, this is what I was hoping for! great news!!!

Sounds like a very classy guy! His heart was in what he was doing, obviously, and he knows it's time to close-up shop.

It's both good and bad news.
The way the remasters are going to sound looks promising, so that's good news.
It's still bad news tho that Dr. Ebbet's is going to stop.
There are more things he can put out besides the U.K. catalogue.
Some canadian releases perhaps, and update on the U.S. catalogue, some more solo albums and some other artists catalogue. It's fine ofcourse if you don't care about all that, but to those who do it's bad news.

Non bootleg people tho won't know who Dr. Ebbet's is,
and bootleg people will hopefully find their way to the Bootleg forum.

Tho he hasn't changed his mind about stoping, he now does say he is willing to take orders for another week.
So those still needing a few titles to fill a gap in the collection can still place an order.

Tho I rather had seen him continue I respect and understand the Doc's decision to stop now. At least EMI by the sound of it, is finally giving the Beatles catalouge the treatment it deserves, tho ofcourse it will never going to please everyone.

Thanks Doc.

That's good or better anyway. I thought it seemed a bit abrupt, that he was shutting down effective immediately. Much as if somebody (EMI?) leaned on him rather heavily, which wouldn't surprise me in the least, really.

Still not sure what I should get.
One week is not enough to get the blue box collection and the Japanese red mono collection complete.
Fortunately everything is still available through the various torent sites.

How is the quality compared to the download sites? About the same or?

Will his other releases, (Mono Ram, Beatles Greatest, etc) go up in value? Or will someone spur EMI to release all of the odd mixes that Dr E so generously gave us?

I think I have it all, so no big deal to me, but there are a few out there that might want these oddities.

Thanks for these posts. I was wondering what effect the new sets would have on the good Doctor. If he is truly leaving the game after all these years and that his aim has been true, I have to say my hat is off. A true Robin Hood.
