I've been listening to my "Blood On The Tracks" NYC sessions out-takes a lot lately. Those original versions are really cool, and I began wondering how many of them were wisely re-recorded with Eric Weisman and Deliverance, and which ones I preferred better. Lets take a look at the 5 tracks that were re-recorded...
"Tangled Up In Blue": I feel the original sessions version has its unique charm, but Dylan knew what he was doing on this one... the official album version is a powerful track whereas the original is weak and lacks the power of the version that ended up on he album.
"You're A Big Girl Now": I'm a bit torn on this one. The original version is very pretty and Bob sings it with a lot of feeling. The album version is excellent - like the above track, it possesses more power than the original.
"Idiot Wind": Like the first two, the version that found its way onto the album is a much more powerful recording than the original. This is not my favorite track on the album, so I can go either way with it.
"Lilly, Rosemary, and the Jack of Hearts": Ok, now however much I love the album version, there is something about the original version that I find more appealing. Some of the lyrics I think we improved upon with the official released version. However, musically, I prefer the original version.
"If You See Her Say Hello": I prefer the original NYC sessions version. I think the bluesy harmonica solo at the end seals it for me.
Curious what you Dylan fans think.
