Andrew Wyeth has passed over. We've lost an amazing artist. May he have a pleaceful journey home.

You may mostly know him from his painting "Braids."

Here is a nice article about him.

"In an interview Andrew Wyeth said to Thomas Hoving1: I work in drybrush when my emotion gets deep enough into a subject. So I paint with a smaller brush, dip it into color, splay the brush and bristles, squeeze out a good deal of the moisture and color with my fingers so there is only a very small amount of paint left. Then when I stroke the paper with the dried brush, it will make various distinct strokes at once, and I start to develop the forms of whatever object it is until they start to have real body…. Drybrush is layer upon layer. It is what you call a definite weaving process. You weave the layers of dry brush over and within the broad washes of watercolor. Andrew Wyeth’s curator Mary Landa has told that in some situations he use a special prepared brush with a tip which consists of down to one sable hair."

Sad to hear that, HC.

This painting captures exactly a Swedish song called Ballad at the Wind's Meadows (Visa Vid Vindens Ängar). Here's a translation of part of the lyrics, sorry for the halting lines that are all my fault, that closest correspond to the painting.

A wind blows across the Wind's Meadows
There's a flutter in a tulle curtain
And I'm gonna write a summer ballad
With sun and flowers in the melody

I want to write a little tune
Where moments become eternity
But words grow dumb and tones def
I just listen in the birch glade

To listen to the song sung (in Swedish) by the composer:

I was just coming here to post that the art world had just lost one of the greats. I grew up in the same area of Pennsylvania that he called home and that was the subject of much of his art. As a kid, I would take school trips to the Brandywine River Museum very close to his studio. I have even taken my kids there several times and they have enjoyed the paintings by Andrew Wyeth and the other Wyeth family painters.

Here are some more great works by Andrew Wyeth.
