View Full Version : More Day By Day

Last weekend I got a few more volumes of the 'Day By Day' series. This morning I was listening to the very end of the sessions on January 8, 1969. Everybody gathered around and talked about options for the live show.
The biggest idea to come up was to get on a boat with a bunch of English fans and perform live at sea. As always, Paul was very optimistic. And John was strangely very much for this idea too. He even mentioned how nice it would be to have the sun come up right as they hit a middle eight in one of the songs. But Ringo was definitely against it. He didn't want to leave the country. And George was typically against the idea completely. He was ignoring the cool possibilities of show, and even went so far as to say that the idea of the show was "completely insane." He also mentioned that before and after the show, they'd be stuck on this boat for 2 weeks with a bunch of fans!
All I kept thinking while I was listening was how nice it would have been if they had just gotten their act together for a show like that. I mean, the rooftop show is definitely one of their highlights, but I think this would have been better. And they wouldn't have been cut short by the police either, although that is also what makes the rooftop show special.
The next few days of the sessions are pretty good. Some of their best rehearsals are from the 9th. But eventually (I think the 10th), George flat out quits the band for about 10 days. In a way, I don't want to keep listening. It's like watching a movie that you know the end of. These new CDs probably contain the actual final arguments between the guys before George left. This material wasn't available before, so I've never heard it. I've read that the biggest riff was at this point was actually between John & George. In any case, I'm sure it will be interesting to hear. And I'm sure George was glad it was all caught on tape!
I'll let you know how it sounds. Maybe I'll make the argument the next radio broadcast.

I would love to hear it all - in a sad kind of way. Yes I'm sure George is 'very pleased' about it all.

Where's the best place to buy something like this mate? Somewhere like Beatlefest? I only wish there was somewhere down here to get it, I'd love to get my hands on it.

Nowhere Man, you can sometimes find groups and lists for bootleg records in which you can trade for things or join CD trees and such, and no money actually changes hands...you can try Yahoo Groups and do a search for Bootlegs and see what you find, I know there are a couple of lists there.
I don't know about B-fest in Australia, but here in the US they can't sell Bootlegs in the dealer room. Usually there's a "Bootleg Room" where such items are sold in a rather clandestine manner (makes me feel like I'm going to a speakeasy!) and you can sometimes find interesting things.
Hope this is of some help to you.

On the way to work today, I listened to more of the sessions. At one point, they spent about 15 minutes working on the stop right after the middle eight of "I've Got A Feeling." I think there are a few seconds of this shown in the movie. It's amazing how picky Paul is, and how he's bugging George to play it exactly the way he wants it. He treats him like a session man. I can easily see how George got sick and tired of stuff like this.

Actually, Bearkat, if you're talking about Chicago B-fest, I think the "People Under The Stairs" refers to the group who hang out under the staircase to the lower level, singing all night. I've never heard that reference to bootleg sellers...usually you have to ask around until someone takes you to the room where they're being sold. That's why I said it was like being let into a speakeasy -- you practically need a password!

The movie was such a cut-up job. I think that famous quote from George is from a few days earlier. I think they were rehearsing "Two Of Us" at that point. George actually seems to be very patient during the "I've Got A Feeling" nightmare. Maybe he already knew he was going to take off, so he just kept quiet about it all.

I think my favorite single bootleg track of all time is an early run-through of "Let It Be." Somehow over the years, it's been designated as the 'Record Mirror' version because Paul didn't have all of the lyrics yet, and he just makes stuff up and happens to say "read the Record Mirror" at one point.
Anyway, the tape available on all previous bootlegs contained just the track by itself, which is less than 3 minutes long. I'll get to the point eventually I'm sure. So today I was listening to more of the 'Day By Day' series, and they started to work on "Let It Be." What followed was nearly an hour of rehearsals for the song. I must say it was like a religious experience. I was tempted to pull over to enjoy it in peace and quiet. I definitely want to make this the next radio broadcast. It's simply amazing to hear them slowly piece the song together. From Paul teaching them the chords, to John fumbling around on bass, to working out the backing vocals, to trying out several versions of the break, to Ringo's drum roll intro, and on and on. They're just about at the point where the track I mentioned above takes place. I can't wait to get in the car tomorrow...

Well, I finally got to the 'Record Mirror' version of the song. Does anybody know of a good shareware program that lets you edit MP3 or .wav files? I want to make this the next radio broadcast, but the tracks are over 15 minutes long. I need to take out some of the fluff before and after the rehearsals.

Just wanted to let out my excitement and say that I picked up the "Get Back Journals II" -an 8 CD Box Set - from ebay earlier tonight. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/grin.gif The final price was only $200 ($202.50 actually) which I was very pleased about! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/rainbow1.gif

Congrats NM, you'll totally love the CDs. It's a very nice and complete set. Try and get Volume 1 if you can.

Thanks Jerry... I wondered how many volumes there are to date? Just the 2? I'm sure this was the one you said there'd be a total of like 90 cd's when they're done! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/afraid5.gif

Well, there are more than a few CD sets out there. One of the first was an 8 CD set called 'Rockin' Movie Stars.' Then there are the GB Journals Volumes 1 & 2. They're both 8 CDs each. Then there's a set called The Twickenham Sessions, with another 8 CDs. The two newest ones are 'Thirty Days' with something like 18 or 19 volumes of 1 or 2 CDs each. This series is supposed to be the best of the best, with nicely edited songs and rehearsals. And finally, for the insane completist, there's the 'Day By Day' series, which so far has 15 volumes of 2 CDs each. This is the set that will supposedly reach like 90 CDs, or about 45 volumes.

I'm finishing up listening to the first 15 volumes now. A few of the reels are missing, and to my complete and utter dismay, one of the missing reels was exactly when George quit and walked out of the sessions. It's strange - one minute you hear him, and then the next track is just the 3 of them playing without him.
After they fiddle around a bit, they stop playing and just start talking to close out the Friday session. John is particularly harsh, even saying things like "if he leaves, he leaves" and that they should just go on as if nothing happened. He even states that if George doesn't come back by Monday, they'll get Eric Clapton to fill in for the live show! That's actually an interesting thought, but of course nobody could replace George.
Anyway, they supposedly had this band meeting over the weekend, which only seemed to make things worse. The tapes from the Monday session are pretty sad, and so far it's just Ringo and then Paul sitting around talking to the director. I've been reading along in this book I have about the sessions, and I think a Yoko-bashing session is about to happen until John shows up.
The sessions drag on for a day or two longer, and then they take a week off before moving over to Apple Studios on the 22nd, by which time George has returned. But that's another story....

Thanks for all that Jerry, I've slotted all those down on my 'to get' list. I have heard of the 'Rockin Movie Stars' set but not seen it up for sale anywhere as yet... as for the Twickenam Sessions 8 CD set, I had my eye on one that was up on ebay just yesterday, but unfortunately it was de-listed for obvious reasons (I HATE when they do that!) The 'Day By Day' series sounds too good to be true, I'll definitely keep my eyes peeled for anything there. I'm also on the lookout for the complete BBC sessions (about 10 CD's all up I think, quite sure they added the 10th only recently)... again, this was up for bids on ebay, but they took it off for the same reason as the Twickenam set. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/frown.gif
So... are all the sets you mentioned (besides the BBC's) included on the Day By Day series? The Rockin' Movie Stars too? In any case, I'd be very interested if you decided to sell any of your sets. How bout you make me an offer I can't refuse. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/wink.gif

Before you go buying anything else, keep in mind that these sets ALWAYS repeat themselves. GB Journals Volume 1 & 2 are good, but if you also get the Twickenham Sessions set, you'll be upset at how much stuff you've already got. Yeah, they say new and improved sound and this and that, but when it comes down to it, you'll already have the material. If you're simply trying to get everything out there, then I would definitely suggest the Day By Day series. Just think, you only have to win the contest 90 more times!
As for the BBC set, it's the same story. There are at least 2 new sets now, and they've got everything that the older Great Dane set has and more. So again, if you're a completist, then get one of the new ones.
By the way, I'm probably going to sell some of my older sets now that I'm collecting the Day By Day series. The first one to go will probably be the Rockin' Movie Stars. Make me an offer I can't refuse...
