NEW HAVEN, Connecticut - Paul Newman, the Academy-Award winning superstar who personified cool as an activist, race car driver, popcorn impresario and the anti-hero of such films as "Hud," "Cool Hand Luke" and "The Color of Money," has died, a spokeswoman said Saturday. He was 83.
Newman died Friday after a long battle with cancer at his farmhouse near Westport, publicist Jeff Sanderson said. He was surrounded by his family and close friends.
In May, Newman said he had dropped plans to direct a fall production of "Of Mice and Men," citing unspecified health issues.
He got his start in theater and on television during the 1950s, and went on to become one of the world's most enduring and popular film stars, a legend held in awe by his peers.
10 Oscar nominations
Newman was nominated for Oscars 10 times, winning one regular award and two honorary ones, and had major roles in more than 50 motion pictures, including "Exodus," "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," "The Verdict," "The Sting" and "Absence of Malice."
Newman worked with some of the greatest directors of the past half century, from Alfred Hitchcock and John Huston to Robert Altman, Martin Scorsese and the Coen brothers.
His co-stars included Elizabeth Taylor, Lauren Bacall, Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks and, most famously, Robert Redford, his sidekick in "Butch Cassidy" and "The Sting."
50 years of marriage
He sometimes teamed with his wife and fellow Oscar winner, Joanne Woodward, with whom he had one of Hollywood's rare long-term marriages.
"I have steak at home, why go out for hamburger?" Newman told Playboy magazine when asked if he was tempted to stray.
They wed in 1958, around the same time they both appeared in "The Long Hot Summer," and Newman directed her in several films, including "Rachel, Rachel" and "The Glass Menagerie."

So sad. Didn't he go to the car races with our George once in a while?
Prayers go out to his family and friends...

My heart broke a little today when I heard the news.
So handsome, so classy. An almost perfect man,
second only to Cary Grant on my list of Men That
Should Be Cloned. How I love those mischievous
twinkling baby blues:

The world is a better place for him having lived in it.
He was handsome, talented and an all-around swell guy to the very end.

With Robert Redford he has been my favourite actor. This is really sad news.
In days like this memories will pass by about movies but also other parts of his life.
Now this may not be new to some or many here but I read this story today about Paul Newman and was touched by it. I did not know he was involved in this, so I just want to share it here.
"Following his death at age 83, it has been revealed that something that started as a joke made $250 million for charity.
Robert Forrester, Vice-Chairman of Newman’s Own Foundation said that Newman’s Own food company began as a joke in his basement 20 years ago, but as it became more and more successful, Newman kept his word and gave away all the profits to charity.
As a result, charities such as Hole In The Wall camps thrived from the money and hundred and thousands of children were benefactors of Newman’s generosity.
"Paul Newman's craft was acting. His passion was racing. His love was his family and friends. And his heart and soul were dedicated to helping make the world a better place for all,” Forrester wrote.
"Paul had an abiding belief in the role that luck plays in one's life, and its randomness. He was quick to acknowledge the good fortune he had in his own life, beginning with being born in America, and was acutely aware of how unlucky so many others were. True to his character, he quietly devoted himself to helping offset this imbalance.
"An exceptional example is the legacy of Newman's Own. What started as something of a joke in the basement of his home, turned into a highly-respected, multi-million dollar a year food company. And true to form, he shared this good fortune by donating all the profits and royalties he earned to thousands of charities around the world, a total which now exceeds US$250 million.
"While his philanthropic interests and donations were wide-ranging, he was especially committed to the thousands of children with life-threatening conditions served by the Hole in the Wall Camps, which he helped start over 20 years ago. He saw the Camps as places where kids could escape the
fear, pain and isolation of their conditions, kick back, and raise a little hell. Today, there are 11 Camps around the world, with additional programs in Africa and Vietnam. Through the Camps, well over 135,000 children have had the chance to experience what childhood was meant to be.
"In Paul's words: "I wanted to acknowledge luck; the chance and benevolence of it in my life, and the brutality of it in the lives of others, who might not be allowed the good fortune of a lifetime to correct it."
"Paul took advantage of what life offered him, and while personally reluctant to acknowledge that he was doing anything special, he forever changed the lives of many with his generosity, humor, and humanness. His legacy lives on in the charities he supported and the Hole in the Wall Camps, for which he cared so much.
"We will miss our friend Paul Newman, but are lucky ourselves to have known such a remarkable person."

I'm so sad to hear about this. I used to eat at one of his restaurants. The food was unbelievably good! I will never forget watching my friend eat a peanut butter & jelly veggie burger! I thought... how nasty, but you know what... Paul was a genius!
Thanks for entertaining us, Paul! Thanks for being so humble & gracious! Thanks for all you did to help the children of this world! I wish everyone had a little bit of you in them!!! GBY!!!

Oops...
I tried to post a nice photo of Paul McCartney with Paul Newman from my PC.
It was from the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach in 2004. Heather Mills had just interviewed Paul Newman on Larry King.

He was an excellent actor and he was a decent person, which isn't always the case with famous people.
RIP Paul Newman
As a tribute we should all eat a load of eggs like in "Cool Hand Luke". :laugh5:

Here is a little tribute video made by Dennis Morgan, (former?) manager of George's various companies and was involved in The Rutles as many other projects.
He wrote this little note with the video which has My Sweet Lord 2000 as music.
During the spring of 1977 George had surprised me with a gift of a new 530i BMW he had shipped to the states from the UK. One early morning he suggested we take her out for a spin to the Riverside Raceway in Southern California to meet-up with his good buddy, Formula One race car driver, Jackie Stewart -- who promptly introduced George and I to Paul Newman
(we were both 'knocked-out'--especially me).
It was a memorable day. Lord rest his soul.
