So as a kid, what kinds of lunches did you get in school? Did you pack your own, or did someone else? Packed the night before and all soggy, or fresh with crusts cut off? :smile1:
Did your drink routinely squash your sandwich?
Did you get REAL desserts or were you the kid with raisins everyone showed their zingers and ding dongs to?
What was your fave or least fave lunch?
Were your school's hot lunches terrible, or do you remember them fondly, though they may have been quite like moist seasoned cardboard? Why did the milk in those small cartons taste unlike any other milk anywhere? http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h211/boogey_man8/EMOTICONS/Happy_992.gif

My mom packed my lunch most of the time. Sometimes it was hot lunch like homemade soup or leftovers. I liked it when she packed chiliquiles. They always tasted better the next day. The only thing I didn't like is explaining to my Gringo friends what chiliquiles were.
I didn't like when I had sandwiches because my drink always smashed it. I did get dessert like apple pie or chocolate cake. But it annoyed me when the frosting stuck on the lid.

I tried to pack my own lunch as much as possible. Especially after finding liverwurst or olive loaf sandwiches one too many times in my lunch box, I soon wised up. You try finding a kid in the lunch room dumb enough to make that kind of trade! :tongue1: (No wonder I was such a scrawny kid!) I didn't have any drinks smashing my sandwiches. It was usually an orange or apple that did that. I was always given milk money everyday for my beverage. And we were allowed to purchase a hot lunch once a week. I remember circling my choice on the school lunch menu for each week. Ahhh--memories! :laugh5:

We got Zingers or those icky Snack Pack pudding cups. Sometimes there were Twinkies. :laugh5:

Ugh! There's nothing worse than a soggy tuna fish sandwich! :barf3:

We were served hot lunches in school, which I rather not think too hard about, thanks. Never knew how it was possible for anyone to ruin perfectly good food that way! :barf3:

I don't remember much about school lunch other than that every Friday was pizza day and the apple brown betty was delicious.

The hot lunch program was introduced at my school sometime around 4th grade. Hot spam lunches were the worst! So...I took my Partrige Family or Scooby Doo lunch box with a thermos of milk or HiC and a sandwich.
High school lunches were a little better - grilled cheese was edible, if doused in ketchup. Fridays were nasty as the lunch would reek of fish. But...we did have the greatest butter cookies!
Now that I'm working a fairly regular work schedule I am once again brownbagging it, but it can be anything from peanut butter to leftovers to somesort of frozen dinner. I would love it if someone would pack a lunch for me!

Oh yes! The frosting sticking to the lid or to the saran wrap or.. before there *was* saran wrap- to the wax paper. I remember that was aweful.

Snack Pack puddings! :laugh5: Zingers and Ding Dongs were pretty good but man, twinkies just taster like vanilla sponge? And remember Scooter Pies? Those were my favorite. The processed parts were re-processed just in case some natural substance accidentally fell in at the factory. :laugh5:

I remember pizza day! :) But they served ours with a fruit cup, if I remember right. Apple betty sounds yummier. :smile1:

I don't like Spam. It's too salty.

I didn't like how my friends would wrinkle their noses and say, "What's THAT?" But they are so tasty.

Nope! They served lunch in the school I went to and you were not allowed to bring your own food! LOL! One of their staples was spinach soup with floating egg halves. We called it dishwater with sail boats! :laugh5: To this day I cannot bring myself to eat spinach!

Here - in England - you would almost certainly be arrested for showing your ding-dong to the other kids at lunchtime :laugh5::laugh5::laugh5:
And my zinger was staying firmly in my lunchbox!!

Yeah, I can imagine! Anything a little different was fodder for unwanted attention sometimes in the lunchroom. Like the kids who had to have spinach on the sandwiches? At first they got comments I remember!
My Mom packed our lunches and they were usually pretty healthy. We got the occassional sweet thing, but not every day. Mostly we got apples, oragnes, boxes of raisins. My favorite was when we'd run out of bread because my Mom would make tiny sandwiches frm saltine crackers then. It was an early version of those orange colored peanut butter or cheese cracker sandwiches they have out now. I loved those~ usually PB&J on the saltines. Messy, but yum.

My mom would also pack Baby Bell cheese. I loved saving the red cheese wax.

In elementary, Mom made us try everything on the menu at least once. I always liked the macaroni and cheese with little smokies (sausages). I loved the sausages, but didn't like the mac and cheese too much when I was a kid, so I'd eat one or two bites and shove as much as I could either to the side or in my empty milk carton.
In middle school, I hardly ever bought lunch. Mom always packed my lunch for me every morning. I can't tell you how many peanut butter and jelly sandwiches I've eaten. The rest of the lunch usually consisted of fruit cups and juice. And they never smashed the sandwich. Mom was good at packing our lunches so they wouldn't. After awhile I got tired of PB&J, and had Mom make me jelly and butter sandwiches. That was it. I absolutely hate deli meat and tuna, so my choices were limited.
In high school, the food was pretty good and there were tons of choices. So no real complaints there. I liked the hot turkey sandwiches, soups, chicken fryz, the salad bar, and my perenniel favorite, salisbury steak.

This sounds totally weird but I never had macaroni & cheese before I moved to Canada. Then it was love at first sight! :inlove7: I still just adore that stuff, it's just yummy with a plain side salad! :tongue3:

I would have loved my mom to pack lunch, but I was the type of kid who never complained about anything, so I just ate the crappy school lunch. I remember the pizza being good, but hated the whole "Fish on Friday" thing.
We had a really mean lady who watched the cafeteria while we ate. I think every school has a mean lunch lady. In fact, I saw her last year and was still a little scared of her.
High school was much better, we were allowed to go off campus for lunch. I pretty much went to the same little store everyday because my mom gave me $2 a day for lunch and with that I could get a drink and some mojo potatoes with nacho cheese or some nachos. I dont think anyone could eat lunch for $2 a day now and I only graduated in 1994....I guess prices go up pretty quickly.

Luckily we had off campus lunch all four years. My friends parents lived near the school and our senior year she and I had lunch than a study period because we took college classes at school, sometimes we would eat lunch then watch tv at her house, I remember watching All My Children everyday.

My siblings and I always ate the school lunches; rarely did we take a lunch from home, so when we ever did, it was a special occasion, like field trips. I think I still have a lunch ticket from elementary school.
Did anybody serve lunch duty, assisting in serving food? I volunteered a few times, but only because it meant getting out of morning classes earlier and getting to afternoon classes later. We got to eat our lunches before everyone else and believed we got the best servings.
Another memory I have is when we'd be served a small slice of chocolate cake. Some of the rowdier kids would deliberately stick their fingers in each others' slices while saying, "are you gonna eat that?" :angry1:
