Ok, there are lots of video-based threads around, but I don't recall one ever that focused on the 1980's. I'll start it off with a song that sports one of my top 10 favorite guitar solos of all-time....

What would the 80's be without Spandau Ballet and what more 80's that the lyrics of True?

"With a thrill in my head an a pill on my tongue
Dissolve the nerves that have just begun
Listening to Marvin all night long
This is the sound of my soul"

I always preferred this one!

SEmKTsY7fiA

The lyrics are very 80's too:

All the old paintings on the tomb
They do the sand dance doncha know
If they move too quick (oh whey oh)
They're falling down like a domino

And the bazaar man by the Nile
He got the money on a bet
All the crocodiles (oh whey oh)
They snap their teeth on your cigarette

Foreign types with the hookah pipes say
Ay oh whey oh, ay oh whey oh
Walk like an Egyptian

The blonde waitresses take their trays
They spin around and they cross the floor
They've got the moves (oh whey oh)
You drop your drink then they bring you more

All the school kids so sick of books
They like the punk and the metal band
When the buzzer rings (oh whey oh)
They're walking like an Egyptian

All the kids in the marketplace say
Ay oh whey oh, ay oh whey oh
Walk like an Egyptian

Slide feet up street bend your back
Shift your arm then you pull it back
Life['s] hard you know (oh whey oh)
So strike a pose on a Cadillac

If you want to find all the cops
They're hanging out in the donut shop
They sing and dance (oh whey oh)
They spin the club, cruise down the block

All the Japanese with their yen
The party boys call the Kremlin
And the Chinese know (oh whey oh)
They walk the line like Egyptian

All the cops in the donut shop say
Ay oh whey oh, ay oh whey oh
Walk like an Egyptian
Walk like an Egyptian

And what would the 80's be without the moonwalk? Here's Jeffrey Daniel from Shalamar doing the original back in '82. Is this mime or is it dancing?

N-JDjUJiQXU

A Night To Remember was a hit but nowhere near that of the moonwalk itself, which really came into its own the following year through - you guessed it - Michael Jackson, who never was bigger than during this decade.

And let's not forget our own 80's anthem. Come on, girls, sing with me! You know the words to this one!

"That's all they really want
Some fun
When the working day is done
Girls - they want to have fun
Oh girls just want to have fun,
They want to have fun,
They want to have fun.... "

I wish I knew who first decided these snobbish attitudes toward music (or art or literature)! Why is something 'bad' if it has mass appeal, it's not real art, but good if it doesn't? Except, to further blur the picture, why are some artists with mass appeal considered cool while others are not? When it comes right down to it, it's all a matter of taste!

Here's one (or perhaps two) of the MOST controversial artists of the 80's & 90's - controversial for being too mainstream!!! If you like Michael Bolton or Kenny G you don't know good music! Hey, folks! If Dylan invited Michael to write songs with him he can't be all crap! If Ray Charles played with him there got to be more to the man. Why not listen? You may shock yourself and actually like it! :devious:

More Phil, this time from 1989 and the album ...But Seriously. Love this mini film video. Some nice shots of Eric Clapton and his backing band that played on the record. It did pretty good in the charts and was a huge hit in Canada that year.

Now here's something a bit different. As we can hear, it's quite possible to combine Native American rhytmns, Irish folk and good ole rock into something quite amazing! This is the title track from Canadian Glass Tiger's underrated Diamond Sun album.

True Colors

You with the sad eyes
Don't be discouraged
Oh, I realize
It's hard to take courage
In a world full of people
You can lose sight of it all
And the darkness inside you
Can make you feel so small

But I see your true colors
Shining through
I see your true colors
And that's why I love you
So don't be afraid to let them show
Your true colors
True colors
Are beautiful like a rainbow

Show me a smile then,
Don't be unhappy
Can't remember when
I last saw you laughing
If this world makes you crazy
And you've taken all you can bear
You call me up
Because you know I'll be there

The worlds got a bit more modern since 1984 yet this song is even more true today with the Net and all.

fAaFt7_6qvk

In the moonlite
Under startlite
Songs old as the night are what I've been dreaming of
Everybody's hard as iron
Locked in a modern world
Dreams are make of a different stuff
I believe love will always be the same
Ways and means are the parts subject to change

M-E-T-H-O-D-O-F-L-O-V-E
It's a method of modern love

I can call you
Got your number
Share my life with you a thousand miles away
If you've hurt me
I haven't shown it
Time's too tight to fight
And we're never face to face
Style is timeless and fashion's only now
We've got the ways no one needs to show us how
