What does everyone think of the Rutles?

HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!! I LOVE THE RUTLES!!!!!!!!!
I think that their film was hilarious - it was full of sight gags and jokes that only Beatles fans would understand, but even if you have the tinest bit of understanding of the Beatles, you'd still find it funny as hell! It's brilliant! I love it!!!!! GO RUTLEMANIA!!! Way to go Stig and Nasty and Barry and... the other guy... .
... graemlins/afraid3.gif ...errr... does that answer your question???

LOL Maggie Mae! It sure does!!
I just finished watching the DVD. (I rented it from Netflix.com) and I was laughing my arse off the whole way thru. You're right about being a fan to understand. I was thinking about showing it to my little cousin who is a fresh Beatle fan off the press, but I think she needs to be educated on Beatle-history a little bit more first. images/icons/wink.gif
Are the Rutles still together?

For years I stayed away from that movie, thinking it was a mean-spirited parody of the Beatles. Boy, was I ever wrong on that! After buying it, it's a favorite of mine. I put it on when I need a really good laugh. And, after all, we're talking about George's good friend Eric, who headed the movie. It couldn't be malicious. And, wasn't George so-o-o-o cute as the reporter? graemlins/kiss3.gif

Does anyone else know??

Oh My! My!
I didn't even notice that was George as the reporter!! Darn!! Now I MUST watch it again. images/icons/wink.gif LOL.
Another question, this came out in the late 70's right? So what did the Beatles, (specially John graemlins/inlove1.gif ) think about them?

Luckily, on my dvd on the extras, Eric goes into that. It was well received by John & Yoko, George & Ringo straight away. Linda loved it initially also, but it took a while for Paul to warm up to it. Until he found out Eric was a scouser too. Then I guess he didn't take offense to it. Just another scouser's sense of humor. graemlins/laugh5.gif
I really don't know if Neil, Eric and the other guys stay in touch or not. There was talk about another Rutle movie ("Archaeology", I think..I may be wrong there.), but I don't know what's happened from that.

Another thing you may find interesting, you kids. images/icons/wink.gif
Eric mentioned how honoured he felt when George used the Rutle "having tea" reference in Anthology. And we all know what he meant by "having tea". graemlins/wink3.gif

I think it was Eric Idle who told the story that while they were getting ready to film the scene with George as the reporter, a kid was nearby watching and went right up to George and asked, "Is that George Harrison over there?"
graemlins/peace.gif
PS: i think George said yes!

Love them, love them, love them. Neil Innes is one of the nicest "celebrities" I've ever met. images/icons/smile.gif There was a second CD called "Archaeology", which is ok, but not as brilliant as the first CD. Supposedly there is also another movie, but it hasn't been released yet. I heard that Eric showed it to George before he passed away and he was ROLLING laughing at it, so I hope we get a chance to see it too.
I saw it when it first came on tv in 1978 and even then I thought it was hilarious. As I learned more, it became funnier and funnier....but I'm a Monty Python fanatic, so that type of humor appeals to me.

I love the Rutles! I think Eric Idle is a very, very funny man, and one of the few people who could pull something like this off. Neil Innes is great too!

That movie is great! I saw it on Comedy Central some odd years ago when I wasn't that much of a Beatles fan but I still thought it was great! My brother who is not a fan of the Beatles even got into the humor! Anyway, that is one of my must buys when I get a job. I enjoy Monty Pythonesque humor anyway, it suits well with me mind...

Oh,yeah!
That's a wanderful movie,a must for all the Beatles and Python's fans.
It was my first Pythonesque movie ever seen.
And from that time on I became a great Python's fan (never heard of them before I see this movie).
Neil is a great composer both the music for the movie and the Archaeology are just great!
And then the one and only Eric Idle: I love him!
And yes, there'll be soon a Rutles reunion!
Eric Idle just finished to direct the second leg: "The Rutles:can't buy me lunch". So stay tuned for more from Nasty,Stig,Sir Dirk and Barry!
Can't wait to see it.... images/icons/grin.gif
Bye!

i just love the movie. i got both the vinylsoundtrack and the video and saw it like a hundred times. it's so brilliant musicwise, too - every tune is packed with clever little jokes...
this would be nice for the trivia section - name the originals the rutles refer to, what do you all think?

Well Neil Innes sent John a copy of the soundtrack and the movie before its broadcast. Then John sent Neil a telegram saying that hes wasn't sending the record and the film back since he loved it so much.
George's Story:
George supported the idea from the begining. He even let Eric see the unreleased Long and Winding Road documentary, so he could get mor Ideas. The way Eric thanked him was he let him have the part of the reporter.
I don't remember Paul and Ringo's though.

I love the Rutles it's got so many great comedians in it. It isn't much fun watching it with anyone that doesn't like the Beatles though. I learned that the hard way, laughing like a fool while my friends look at me like I've grown a third head. images/icons/wink.gif

While the second still have to come out,but I believe that it will come out only on US television and not for the cinema.
Maybe it'll reach Europe in a second moment...I hope!
Hope this'll help.

Ringo said that he liked the Rutles "after 1968". I also heard that he found parts of it sad to watch as he remembered the reality of the situation (Leggy moving to Australia/Brian's death).
It wasn't until a few years ago that I found out that John and Yoko loved it and Lennon refused to return his copy of the show and the music. I always wondered if Yoko would take the Nazi thing as yet another attack on her or as an allegory for how rottenly she's been treated by the public (I'm sure there's a lot of crazed Beatle fans who feel that the Nazi comparison isn't far off). I also heard that it was John who advised Neil Innes to not include Get Up and Go on the record because if EMI tried to sue Innes for using Beatlelike songs, that's the song they would have gotten him for as John felt it was the most similar to its inspiration. Anyways, it was left off bt legal action was threatened. Although it was pretty clear that Innes wouldn't lose the case, the people paying for the Rutles didn't want to cover legal costs even if they won so Innes had to forfeit the rights to the Rutles and hasn't seen a penny from them. Incidentally, the CD released in 1990 contains all the songs including those left off the record.
Arachaeology came out in 1996 and was a collection of songs that Innes had written previously that he had now Beatlefied. I highly recommend it and if you haven't seen it I know you can see the video for 'Shangri-La' on Neil Innes website at www.neilinnes.org. (http://www.neilinnes.org.) Eric Idle found a bunch of footage from the 1978 documentary that wasn't used and plans to use it in The Rutles: Evolution (or Can't Buy Me Lunch).
Idle watched and read everything he could about the Beatles (including what would become The Beatles Anthology making the Rutles "a parody of a film no one had seen" in Idle's words) to make the Rutles. I must have seen the scene with Bill Murray the K 200 times before seeing the actual footage it parodied not knowing it was a parody. The whole "the Rutles are coming to town to talk about there trousers" was taken very closely from footage of the Beatles in New York in 1964. Just as Dirk and Nasty sit in the back of a limo listening to Bill Murray the K and saying "I don't know about this do you know about this", the actual event had Paul and John listening to a radio DJ saying "The Beatles are going to be here tomorrow reading their own poetry" while Paul says "We are? Do you know about this?".

A great, great movie! I especially love the video when The Rutles sing "OUCH" and apples keep bouncing off their heads.
I can kind of see why McCartney might not have liked it at first since it has the Eric Idle character (based on Paul, I think) becoming a punk rocker complete with a safety pin through the head! HA-ha! (Of course, he should have eased up considering the George character became a dress wearing flight attendant - is that right?)
This movie, like Monty Python and The Holy Grail, make me bust a gut and need stitches every time I watch them.
Anyone know where I can either download or purchase or both the first Rutles movie and the second one about the Archeology (when did that come out??)? I'd really be interested to know.

I love it! I saw it for the first time recently, after I found it in a bargain bin in a video store for 2 bucks! I laughed so hard I almost had an asthma attack. Even my mother loved it and she's not a Beatles fan. Wasn't Mick Jagger and Paul Simon great? It was like they were talking about real events. My favourite part is the references to drinking tea. I drink tea. Lots of tea. Indian tea...
