Australian actor Heath Ledger has died in New York City. He was 28.

A New York Police Department spokesman confirmed the actor was been found dead at a downtown Manhattan residence.

Ledger, who was nominated for an Oscar for his performance in Brokeback Mountain, has a two-year-old daughter Matilda with his ex-girlfriend Michelle Williams.

Last night an insider disclosed that the Brokeback Mountain star had been battling substance abuse problems for some time.

"He had a stint in rehab late last year when he was treated for heroin," the source told The Daily Mail, adding that Ledger was increasingly introverted at the time of his death.

Australian born Ledger took his break-up with Williams very badly, according to the source.

Chief among his celebrity confidants during the final stages of his life was fellow Australian Naomi Watts, who dated Ledger for two years.

How very sad for his daughter and family. RIP
I liked the guy, he was a solid actor, seemed good humored as well.

Wow what a shock. I loved that movie The Patriot that he was in before he was a major star. I've been looking foward to seeing him as the Joker in the new Batman film as well. What a shock.

I'm still quite shocked at this news.

I've seen his movie A Knight's Tale many times over the years, it used to be one of my favourites.

It's so sad that Heath is dead, he was so young and very talented, and had a whole life ahead of him.

My thoughts to his family.

R.I.P Heath.

Very sad about this talented actor. What's worse is heroin takes another life.

Where did you hear it was heroin? The last news report I saw said the initial autopsy was inconclusive and further results could take 10 days.

I think it was supposedly sleeping pills, but most likely unintentional.

It's a shame, I wasn't a huge fan of his but this is totally out of the blue.

Sounds like there were a number of perscription drugs involved. And what is all this stuff about the woman that found him calling Mary-Kate Olsen?! Does that strike anyone else as a little odd??

It was Mary-Kate's apartment he was staying in.

Same as our dear Nick Drake O'D on antidepressants. What a shame for his family and friends.

When I 1st saw the news of his death I just couldnt believe it. I was
only praying if the news channel will show some other guy, some other 'Heath Ledger's picture. BAD LUCK OF MINE! finally when they really showed his recent n' old photographs from that moments Im feeling terrible. I wll never see him again in looooots of good movies.
I still don know how I'll feel when I'll see his last complete performance in the batman movie 'Dark Night'. May be for the 1st time I'll see him in each n' every scene in an unbelieveable way.

It's such a great lose. Specially when the person is a big rising star in a quite popular area and have sooooo much talent to give the world lots of their natural gifts!
My condolences go to his family & friends.
May God keep his soul in peace.
