Did anyone of you see `Magical mystery tour` when it was aired in 1967?
What did you think of the movie then?

Although the best opinion is yours. Try to get it.

I was nowhere near born back in 1967 but most people who saw it then will tell you that it was nonsense. But it was aired in B and W instead of colour so the visual impact of the roadshow was lost. Watch it yourself, the music is good even if there's not much else in the movie.

I had the unique experience of seeing this film in a theatre. It was at the RKO Fordham, in 1978, as the bottom of a double bill with AMERICAN HOT WAX. How the hell a theatre in the Bronx got MMT to screen, I have no idea.
Needless to say, I probably had an advantage over a lot of viewers who saw this on TV first by seeing it for the first time in glorious color, with a theatre's sound system playing the music while the Beatles were almost twenty feet tall on screen.
And God, did this film SUCK! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/scream3.gif
I know it was offered earlier that the best way to make up your mind about the film is to see it yourself; but for the love of God, save yourself the trouble. I think about how my life was so much poorer for sitting through this movie, and I plead with you, save your respect for the Beatles by not subjecting yourself to this.

I didn't see MMT in 1967, mostly because it didn't air on American television, and I was too young to care back then anyway.
That said, I did see it in 1978 or so, when my friend's high school ran it in a double bill with "The Rolling Stones in Hyde Park." I think they were charging $1.50 to get in for the evening for both films.
I'd never seen MMT and had heard very little positive commentary about it -- and I must say that when I finally did see it, I was almost ready to go back to the people taking the money and ask for the 75c back, it was THAT bad! To this day, I tell people how I saw it for the first time, and how 75c was about all it was worth, if that...
The music is indeed okay, but dear God, the film is just DREADFUL. Don't go out of your way to see it -- if it pops up someplace where you don't have to pay for it or where it won't cost you a lot, you might go check it out, but it's not even worth actively looking for. Ugh! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/barf4.gif

<font size="2" face="Tahoma, Arial, sans-serif">just curious have you seen it since '78? I first saw it a couple of months ago and it is a weird one,but keeping in perspective that it's a "60's" film and all, I was pretty young in the late sixties but I do remember it was a pretty weird era any ways. I think MMT is a classic. The video of I Am A Walrus the only one I believe is worth it, not to mention the hottest shot of Paul ever. And it has taught my kids just what people on drugs look like!!! That has been worth it too.

I didnt see MMT in it's entirety until 1997! I saw it for the 1st time at Beatlefest. I dont think it's that bad. Strange? yes. Trippy? yes. But it's got some good moments in it. and it's got good music on it like Walrus and all that.

Well, I wasn't around to see it in '67, but I did see it not too long ago.
Honestly, I don't think it's that bad. It's got some good moments in it. The sheer "ok, what the heck?" aspect of it makes me laugh. They definitely had some good ideas and I think that if it'd had been given the proper love and care, it might have turned into something really interesting. If all else fails, the music and the sequences for the songs are fun, my favorites are "I Am The Walrus" and "Blue Jay Way."

I actually know a girl who's a big fan of this movie - it's her favorite Beatle movie. Although I can't say I love it, it does make me laugh. I like quite a few scenes, but I'm glad I got it on DVD, so I can just skip certain ones. My favorite moment is still when you see the expressions of George and John in the stripper part, though.

with tighter editing and more scene(screw the plot), this could have been more than just a cult classic. dumbest scene: the one with the old man and auntie dancing on the beach. best scene: when the beatles are magicians and john comes in to say he's been half an hour doing something. funny stuff at times.

I wasn't born when it first came out, but I actually like this film. It's not my favorite thing they ever did, but I really like some of the footage. And how can you not like the sing-a-long scene where everyone is a little blitzed? It makes me laugh every time I see it. images/icons/smile.gif graemlins/beer1.gif
