I just tried to take the trivia test, but the site wouldn't load. DoctorRobert, is there another link to it that might work?

Sorry guys... it worked for me when I previewed the post and tested it. But it looks like I'm having server trouble today. How embarrasing. I'll post an update as soon as it's cleared up. Really sorry about that.

The point of it is not to see if you know your stuff. It's a chance to win something.

This isn't a plug for Dr. Robert but.......... Dr Robert has recently had a book published called "Inside The Yellow Submarine" The Making of The Beatles' animated classic. It has gotten great reviews from all over. So I'd imaging this would be a little more than your standard Yellow sub fluff test. Welcome to Beatlelinks Dr Robert Hieronimus!

Okay you guys... it's shrinking time in Pepperland!

The site is working again, and hopefully will be for you by the time you read this and try to access the contest. Remember, it wouldn' t be fair to Goldmine readers to discuss here the answers to the questions posted there, but it would be fun to see how you do answering the trivia in my last post. And maybe you can send in some of your own Yellow Sub toughies!

Here's the link to the contest again:

I just went over the contest questions and they are really good ones. I did have to stop and think on a couple of them. BTW, it did come in handy that my daughter wanted to watch the movie earlier today. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/wink.gif

Hi HMVNipper! Yes, as soon as I logged in a few days ago to post this article (prematurely, it turns out), I said aha! Now I know why that Email address looked so familiar! Funny how that works. We're on the phone to the servers again this morning, as they still haven't fixed whatever it is that they assured me would be fixed by Friday afternoon. I think to be fair to Goldmine readers, I won't post any of the trivia questions here (so those who want to enter their contest can send in their replies to try to win the book), but I just made up a few exclusive new ones for you right here and now, maybe to fill the time till my website it fixed? No prizes for the winners here, just praise from your fellow posters. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/lookaround.gif

Ready?

Which monster in the Sea of Monsters did John Lennon claim to have created for the film?

What animation company did Paul McCartney say he had kinda hoped Yellow Submarine would resemble?

Which Beatle is/was rumored to be a big Yellow Submarine memorabilia collector?

Which comedy troupe also used the phrase “It’s All In the Mind” before George Harrison’s character in Yellow Submarine?

Thanks bearkat77. I remember saying to the Goldmine people that the questions aren't hard at all for people like us who've seen the movie at least 50 times. (or multiple thereof) Glad you enjoyed it.

I'll give it a shot! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/teeth1.gif

1. The Kinky Boot Beast? http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/eyebrows.gif
2. Disney?
3. Ringo? (He seems like the type)
4. The Goons! And also, that line was once spoken by John's character in the Beatles cartoon series - the "Strawberry Fields Forever" episode.

Very good EasternBird... you got all but number 1 correct. And I didn't know that about "It's all in the mind" popping up in the cartoon series. Thanks for that!

Actually in the Lennon quote I'm referring to he implies that ALL the good ideas for the film were lifted from the minds of the Beatles without due credit, but he went into detail about one of the monsters in particular.

Ah, the Hoover! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/smile1.gif And you're welcome...I heard the "it's all in the mind" line while watching the episode a few months ago! The animation in that episode also seems very Yellow Submarine-ish - it was the last episode produced.

You got it right ! Here's the entire quote from Playboy, plusa little more on the subject from my book, INSIDE THE YELLOW SUBMARINE:

John Lennon: The Yellow Submarine people, who were gross animals, apart from the guy who drew the painting - the actual Yellow Submarine - came and, apart from sort of lifting all the ideas for the movie from out of our heads and not giving us any credit - like Erich Segal writing Lennonesque lines straight from In His Own Write-style and the crew - we had nothing to do with that movie and we sort of resented them and we didn’t know what it was. But I like the movie. I like Heinz [Edelmann]’s artwork. But they got all the ideas for the glove in the sky and the thing that sucks people up was my idea. They said, have you got any monsters? I said, yeah, there’s Horace the vacuum cleaner in the swimming pool which was a thing you could buy, and it went ‘round the pool sucking up things, you know. And I said that could be a monster that sucks. They just took them and never credited. Playboy January 1981.

May Pang remembers Lennon feeling miffed that he didn’t receive more credit for some of the design concepts in Yellow Submarine, particularly the vacuum cleaner monster. Al Brodax has been quoted as well saying Lennon once confronted him saying You stole my ideas. You gave me no credit. The original co-creators will vehemently deny that Lennon had any input into the designs, however.

Cool! So where's the praise from my fellow posters? http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/wink3.gif

I didn't realize that John and the others had offered that much input for the film. That's pretty interesting.

Well, actually, they didn't add much input to the film. I think we call this a little bit of revisionist history that took on a life of its own inside John's head somehow. He obviously felt very strongly about it by 1980, but NONE of the actual artists on the film, including Heinz Edelmann, the designer, remember ever having any discussions like this with the Beatles. The artists were desperate for input from the Beatles at the design stage, but never got it, because it was not until the designs were done that the boys realized how good it was going to be and overcame their reservations about the project. At that time they wanted to get more involved, but it was too far along by then.

I wanted to include in that last post the rebuttals of some of the film's co-creators that I have in my book, but it looked too long so I cut it back to the Lennon quote. Needless to say none of them were very pleased to hear this quote and denied it quite vehemently.

There are a LOT of people who never got credit for contributing to the Yellow Submarine, but I don't think any of The Beatles would qualify for that list. Again, I could go on and on, as we covered this in detail in the book, but I'll leave it at that for now.

I didn't know John came up with the vaccuum monster. Though I have to agree with EB, I would think that John would have come up with the kinky boot beast. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/wink.gif
