View Full Version : I have AHDN... 3 days early!

Okay, funny story.

Today while shopping in the mall I decided to check out the new store that sells movies only. I naturally gravitated towards the section where they have music videos to make sure all is right with the world and they are still selling Beatles movies. Well, to my surprise they had the new version of "A Hard Day's Night", the VHS version, on the shelf! I couldn't believe it. I was, as the British would say, gobsmacked. I immediately pulled it off the shelf and went to one of the guys working there and questioned them about it, mentioning it's not supposed to be on sale until September 24. So he looked behind the counter where more copies of the VHS and DVD were located with a post-it note attached saying, probably, "on shelf on 9/24". So he asked his boss about it, and the boss said, "well if she wants it, she can buy it." I couldn't resist a chance to have it earlier than everybody, so I bought it.

The only frustrating thing was that I bought this early in the afternooon and I had to go to work soon after. And I only got off at 9, so I had to wait 8 1/2 hours to watch it!

So, right now, as I type this, it's playing in the background. I'll post later with details about it.

So far the picture is good and so is the sound. It's much better than my previous versions that I have taped off of TV. And the closed captioning is very accurate. I'm only up to the part where Ringo's received his invite to "Le Cirque Club."

Wow, congratulations! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/thumbsup1.gif Please let us know how it is - especially the extras! I ordered mine from Amazon, but they said I may not receive it 'til October! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/angry9.gif I should have just gone to the mall on Tuesday. Oh well.

Alright, well I've finished watching the movie. I also need to tell you all that I have the VHS version, not the DVD, although I probably could've bought that, too, if I wanted.

My advice to those who have the options of VHS vs DVD: buy the DVD. I don't have a choice, I don't have a DVD player.

But still, the VHS is good. The picture is good and clear and well cleaned up. The sound is very good. I was very happy with the closed captioning. For years I've watched this movie without understanding some of the things the guys were saying, but now with the closed captioning I understand perfectly. The movie is now funnier since I understand what they're saying.

The only extra you get on the VHS is the promotional special "Things They Said Today...". This documentary is pretty good. There's some pretty good interviews with the people behind the scenes. There's some really good behind the scenes footage I've never seen before. It reminds me of "You Can't Do That: The Making of A Hard Day's Night".

The thing I was disappointed about was they didn't include the concert footage of "You Can't Do That". I love that song.

Thanks, I was wondering about that. I'm surprised they didn't include it, since it's on MPI's "The Making of AHDN." Interesting.

AND I got the DVD for FREE...we wanted a DVD player for our television (we have one on the computer) and Best Buy had a Toshiba five-disc DVD player/CD player on sale for $149, and if you bought that DVD player you got any DVD up to $19.99 for FREE...so, I got the player and the DVD was thrown in! Too cool!

Hey, some people I know on another board were complaining vigorously about how lousy the sound quality is on this disc. Anyone agree or disagree?

Good luck getting the DVD player!

And are they kidding about the sound quality? I think it sounds GREAT...and I saw the DVD when it was premiered at Beatlefest and thought the same thing. (Did you see it there, Rell?) Perhaps the complaints come because the songs are not ten times louder than the rest of the soundtrack -- as it should be, IMO. And you can hear the background noises, like the big, loud sound the amp makes when Geo knocks it over during "If I Fell!" But I think it sounds pretty darn good -- and I watched the DVD today!

Just picked up my copy today - $17.99 at Best Buy! My husband watched it with me. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif The picture quality is wonderful. The bass line in "I should have known better" was quite loud, but we made an adjustment to our surround sound system and everything was fine from then on. I haven't seen all of the special features yet, but what I have seen I've really enjoyed. A definite "must have" for anyone with a dvd player!

Maybe tonight! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

Oh, and Susan, I bought a different one - the one you got looked really nice, but it was so BIG! It wouldn't have fit in the space I had available, so I went with a much smaller 1 disc model for $119.

The poor cashier was in a cultural tomb if s/he didn't know about AHDN.

Now, I'm no fan of "Grease," but I just can't understand how folks could get more excited over that than AHDN! (I know, I am somewhat biased). I was so sick of "Grease" when it came out and for 2 summers when I worked in a day camp, I had to endure that album day in and day out ad nauseaum. That soured me on "Grease" and if I never saw or heard it again, I would not be sad.

I bought mine on Tuesday, but for the deep price of $30, but it was worth every penny. I got mine at a local video store which didn't have any copies left for sale, but the lady at the desk was nice enough to let me by the one they would have lent out. The DVD is soooooooo good. worth every penny

It may just be because this is my very first DVD and I've owned a DVD player for a grand total of three days, but I'm finding it REALLY difficult to maneuver (sp??) around in this DVD. Am I the only one?

is anyone having trouble with the dvd-rom features on both disks? i put in disk 2 first and no special features were available. then i put in disk 1 and and had to install some miramax software but could not access some of the features...it's like the software freezes.

That second DVD was extremely enjoyable--worth every penny! I especially liked the interview with David Jaxon, the little boy throwing tires at Ringo. He's one of the most personable actors I've ever seen!
