Ginger "the breaker" Baker got his name cause of his hair colour. I think he's an underrated drummer, and he is the best drummer I have ever heard. Moon "the loon" is more famous, because of his madness. He was completely out of his mind. Plain and simple. He used to bombard Pete Townsend with bombs or something. And, yet, I listened to his drumming, and from what I heard it's ridicoulous to compare him to Ginger. Just listen to Ginger's drumming on Crossroads, for example the version on Wheels of fire, or the one (black and white, it's one of the first when you search "cream") on youtube, i think it's from 1968. He's drums like a machine-gun on that one. Not to mention Toad, which he him self composed, the version on Wheels of fire, or few versions from the sixties on youtube. I wonder how come the drum kit hasn't fallen appart when i watch a particular one of those versions.
The only one who comes even close, out of those I have heard, is Bonham. The drumming on Stairway to heaven is excellent, and there's one particular version of Moby Dick which is out of this world, but even that is nowhere near the condedsed and insanely intense Toads from late 60s. He's perfectly versitile, he drums anything from Jazz, rock, blues, "pure african banging", he even went to Africa to expand his drumming horizons.
To me, he's the Van Gogh of drummers, he even looks like him.
