View Full Version : Beatles doing Shakespeare

I have a videotape of different news footage of the Beatles, and on this tape is a skit they did where they portrayed characters from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. It is absolutely HYSTERICAL! I die laughing everytime I watch it.
Here are the characters:
Paul-Pyramus
John-Thisbe
George-Moonshine
Ringo-Lion
It is a great thing to watch, if you all ever happen to see it, It is well worth it. Especially to see John playing a girl, and George threatening to kick a heckler's butt.

I love it...I wish they'd issue the full "Around the Beatles" of which this is part on a tape. The concert segment is on The Beatles LIVE Ready Steady Go but of a different quality.

Me too -- I have the video that AriesGirl mentioned, and I bought it strictly because it had the Pyramus and Thisby sketch on it, but it'd be cool to see the whole show...
I think one of my British friends actually has it, but of course a copy of his tape would be useless to me -- boo-hoo! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/cry3.gif I seem to remember seeing the whole program when we were visiting him...

I love it! Tell me, the "Around the Beatles" I have is a partial show. What is the name of the "full" concert video and I hope I can get it off eBay.
I love the Beatles in those Elizabethan costumes with that sexy hair! I just love it!
I just wish the songs were done in full instead of a blended medley.

So did I! I think the video's called "Fun With The Fab Four." I would love to see the whole show as well. It's a great sketch but the audience is so rude! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/angry9.gif But it's so great to watch.

Thats the same video I have Eastern Bird!
The audience is rude, but I like how the fellas just keep on going, and not let the hecklers bother them.
George's reaction is my fave.
I too would love to see the entire thing.
And how about the part at the beginning with
John Paul and George "playing"the trumpets?
I love what George does, when he looks straight at the camera with a big silly grin on his face, points to himself and the trumpet, like Look at me! Look what I did!

BB,
I got it a couple of years ago as part of a set along with a tape called the Beatles Unauthorized. Where I got it? Wal-Mart.
I believe its roughly about a hour maybe more, thats just off the top of my head.
What is on it, is basically some newsreel footage of the fellas, like their triumphant return to Liverpool, a press conference from the Netherlands when Jimmy Nichol was subbing for Ringo, some bits from when they were in Japan, the Jesus controversy,an interview after it was announced that they were to receive the MBE, a little documentary about A Hard Days Night, stuff like that. The Shakespeare sketch, as Eastern Bird will back me up on this, is at the end of the tape, after the Japan interview. There is also a little interview where John is being asked what were his influences for In His Own Write, and he says James Stewart and Betty Grable. They cut up until George rips up the book, when John goes to read "Good Dog Nigel".
But the Shakespeare skit is the best. They all tell the hecklers, who are these two basically pains in the you know what teenage boys. Everyone else in the audience are basically Beatle people.
George is the one you really go "You tell em!" He just doesn't take any crap from them at all. You will notice they stay quiet after he speaks.
John's great as Thisbe the girl. He almost slaps Paul in the face, jumps and screams like a girl when Ringo chases him, almost causing George to trip over the doggie-woggie.
I won't go into too much detail 'cause I don't wanna ruin it for ya, but its a must see.
"And know that I one Ringo the drummer am,
But if I was really a lion, I wouldn't be making all the money I am today, would I?"

I love eBay, because not only can I sometimes get fantasticly cheap deals there on rare Beatles recordings, but when Perry Cox sells things things I have, I can find out just how much people are prepared to pay for them.
I got a couple of old original photos of when the boys did 'A Midsummer Nights Dream' One with George on the stage with those things in his hands grinning cheesily forwards, and one of George backstage http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

We just finished reading A Midsummer Night's Dream in my Shakespeare and Company course. When I was reading the part about Pyramus and Thisbe I couldn't help thinking of this skit. Its so funny, but unfortunately I haven't seen it since I was able to rent Fun With The Fab Four, from a library and that was years ago. I wish it could have been included on the Anthology broadcast that was on tv, or better yet the soon be be re-released Anthology, cause Í haven't had any luck finding that video, and EBAY is just too expensive for our poor Canadian dollar!
