Everyone has seen Help!, right? Well at the very end you know where it has "This film is dedicated to so and so who in 18something invented the sewing machine" I saw at my gradparents house the other day, and it look just like it!! The word "SINGER" and everything!

Elias Howe. I have one of those old machines, too. My husband bought it in case of Y2K...non-electric, ya know.
