Ringo Cat likes to look at things upside-down. She'll lie on the floor and roll over so that she's looking around upside-down. Or she'll sit on my lap with her back to me and lean back to look at me upside-down. Weird cat.

Bes does the same thing! When my son holds her she turns her head upside down so she can look at me like that. I figured I must be so much more attractive upside down! :laugh5:

Maybe she actually sees the world upside down, until she rolls over! :laugh5:

Dad was that way this week. Monday night he finally admitted to my brother that he wasn't well (I won't go into details) and we took him to an ER ... we got him home only tonight :afraid2: He's doing much better, is back to his usual orneriness and says he'll do much better about informing us if anything's troubling him.

another year--war, assassinations, poverty, when will we learn?
On the other hand, more people working for peace, more freedom of speech (thanks internet), more waking up to environmental concerns, more people concerned with the suffering of others.

On balance it's progress; slow, slow, slow, but progress anyhow.

What kind of stains, Sara?

Sarandipity
Jan 07, 2008, 01:30 AM
I have NO idea. I think it's mainly built up dust (in some places the marble takes on a cloudy appearance).

The building I live in is over 100 years old... And everything in the bathroom is original. The trim along the floor consists of three panels of marble. It's gorgeous in some places, and other places not so much... But there's definitely potential if I could just get it cleaned up!

hibgal
Jan 07, 2008, 01:50 AM
Okay, first a don't: DO NOT use acidic cleaners, type bathroom cleaners or vinegar as these will further damage the marble. Look for products with a pH of 7 and higher. Regular dish detergent works best to clean off as much of the dirt as possible. If the area is clean but matte (cloudy) the surface may have been damaged. Try rubbing with a nylon cloth dipped in soapy water. Dry off. Then use beeswax dissolved in Naphtha to polish up the surface. Warning: Naphtha is highly flammable so discard used clothe by wetting with water then throw in the garbage. Do not pour down excess product in the drain, it will contaminate the water supply.

Otherwise is marble a very durable surface and handled without harsh chemicals should last for many years to come. Good luck!

Does anyone know of a good way to remove over 100 years of dust/grime/staining from marble?

I think that the sulfuric acid doesn't react with marble, and that it reacts with over 100 years of dust/grime/staining. Not sure, though, cause i think that dust is mostly Carbon and Calcium. anyway marble is mostly CaCO3, i really think sulfuric acid doesn't react with it, in which case it can't harm your marble. That is, of course, if you can get sulfuric acid. I don't know if it's even legal, not to mention it's dangerous (sulfuric acid, that is). Anyway, drug enforcement administration of usa regulates all transactions of sulfuric acid. What size and shape is your marble? Safest way would be to put marble in sulfuric acid, which is kept somewhere, and then, after dust etc is gone, pull it out of it with something which doesnt react with sulfuric acid.

But wait a minute. You've graduated from college in the area of pharmacautics, biochemistry or something? You should know more about this than I do, then. So, let me know if I'm wrong.

I think one would have to lose his marbles, to do what i have just proposed.

ok, i just got my answer. so, just to reenforce: DO NOT, under any circumstances, use sulfuric acid. pH 7 or higher? those would be alkalines, right?

hibgal
Jan 07, 2008, 02:21 AM
Right! Acids dissolve the marble, which is probably the cause of the milky surface Sara mentions.

maybe he re-enacting one of the snow scenes from Help? just kidding, maybe he is a member of the Polar Bear Society, there is a club here in the USA, that goes swimming sometimes below 0 F, they do it all over the place in the US in the winter, or perhaps the fellow has issues :bigeyes3: he must like the Beatles, so he must not be all bad :wink2:

Does anyone know of a good way to remove over 100 years of dust/grime/staining from marble?
Here's a site that discusses maintenance and renovation of marble floors:
http://www.sacredplaces.org/PSP-InfoClearingHouse/articles/Maintaining%20Marble%20Floors.htm

Also, for other maintenance issues, this site has a lot of useful information (mostly under the Preservation Briefs section): http://www.nps.gov/hps/tps/publications.htm. It's intended specifically for historic buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Place, which is why there is talk of "regulations" and such, but the info is great for any old home.

My husband thinks I'm weird because I like horror movies and discussing them with my brother and sister. He doesn't like them much. Especially ones dealing with ghosts. The only horror movies I don't like are the slasher films and the ones I like to call "Torture porn", like Saw and Hostel.

I find that watching thses movies are a release for me. They give me an adreneline rush. I told my husband that real life is scarier than horror movies. We faced unemployment, possible foreclosure and trouble in the family. That is more frightening than ghosts that crawl out of the TV or pods taking over the planet.

Horror movies are like a roller coaster ride. It slowly gathers momentum and then the jump at you moment is like riding down fast on the track. Then you laugh nervously about it later. But unlike a rollar coaster, you don't get motion sickness. Unless you watch The Blair Witch Project.

Georgie Girl
Jan 14, 2008, 06:21 PM
Horror movies sometimes mess with my mind, but two movies I really liked are the original "Cat People" and its sequel "Curse of the Cat People," starring Simone Simon. They came out in the 1940's. I wouldn't even call them horror flicks as they are not screamfests. They are more atmospheric and suspenseful film noir with elements of horror. You never see the horror--you hear some of it, but the horror is implied, if that makes sense.

Ooh, "The Bad Seed!" That was freaky! I thought it was strange that the cast was brought out at the end and introduced, like a stage play. I guess that would have kept people leaving the theatre from being too disturbed by it. :nono3:

I am also reminded of a ghost movie that came out in the 50's called "The Turn of the Screw," in which Deborah Kerr plays yet another governess to two motherless children in the late 1800's. Pamela Franklin was in this when she was little. She played the bitchy student in "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" later. She also was in a Disney movie with Brian Keith, "A Tiger Walks."

Some children's books are like that. To this day I can't get through "The Little Match Girl" or "Crow Boy" or "Peter's Flag" with dry eyes.

The pug down the street is very cuddly and she has a double curl in her tail. She lets me pick her up and she will give you all the pug cuddles you want. She's a very sweet light colored pug with a mashed in looking face and round, marble like eyes and a very curly tail.

There is a white German shepherd in the area. He's a very gentle dog. Then there was this Boston, a sweet little bulldog whom everybody loved. She moved away. Luckily a chihuahua named Tequila lives up the street along with a passel of other wonderful dogs in the neighborhood including a tri-color female basenji with a triple curl in her tail and she yodels instead of barks! We love her!

I've read most of Montgomery's books although I preferred Emily to Anne. Montgomery screwed up in the last Emily book, IMO, because her characters were growing one way and she tried to force them the other, so she blotched the ending, which is not at all true to character.

Anyone here liking Jean Webster, btw? Most have read her Daddy Long-Legs (and yes, it's been made into a movie - several times) but I always preferred her stand-alone sequel Dear Enemy. It's a totally irreverent book, even more amazing when you think she wrote it close on a century ago!

I have decided to paint the walls of my living room what can only be described as "Rubber Soul orange." Not only will it compliment my soon to be navy blue furniture, but it will be a FABulous reason to hang up my Rubber Soul poster for all to see and admire.

George was especially beautiful on the Rubber Soul cover.

George Harrison was fab and fine!

He was intense.

Before we got married my husband had an orange bedroom. He painted what he called "Great Pumpkin Orange" and when he moved out to get married the guy who moved in kept it and said it made him feel happy.

George Harrison and his soothing voice can make many people happy.

I love the cover of Rubber Soul. George's lean, ascetic good looks; thick wavy hair and intensity add to the appeal of the cover.

Oh, and Ford Falcons RULE! :thumbu2:

Everyone needs to hear the music of composer Eric Whitacre. His music is absolutely incredible! I recommend "When David Heard." It's around 15 minutes long, but completely worth a listen. The music is so beautiful, it made me cry.

FOR ALL OF YOU WHO WANTED TO HEAR MY BROTHER'S GLEE CLUB:
Here's some videos of my brother's glee club singing. I posted them on YouTube.
If you see the [now retired] director, look to the right of his head. See the really black guy? Go one over to the right from him, and there's my brother! The videos are not the best in sound or picture quality, but they sound nice either way!

One of my faves: Praise to the Lord the Almighty

God Bless Africa - They're going to use this one when they go to South Africa in May/June!
