I thought this movie was extremely cute. Especially with all the Beatles references and how his daughter was happy to receive The White Album as a gift for her birthday. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif LoL! What did you guys think of the movie?

Also, any idea on why the VHS costs so much at Amazon?

"I Am Sam" is a delightful movie starring Sean Penn as a mentally challenged father with a bright, spirited 7-year-old daughter named Lucy (after "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds"). Lucy's mother was homeless and moved in with Sam because she had nowhere to go. She jumps ship right after Lucy's birth and it is up to Sam and his friends from the Workshop to raise her.

Avid Beatles' fans, the men all make references to Beatle songs and one especially adorable scene has Sean Penn in an Edwardian ca. 1963-64 collarless suit, Beatle wig and an inflatable bass "like Paul" when he visits Lucy's school for Halloween. Lennon posters grace his walls and one especially memorable scene shows Lucy, Sam and their friends enacting the "Abbey Road" cover.

Just go see it. You will love it. Dakota Fanning (sp) the child who plays Lucy is adorable. A Dutch-bobbed blonde, the 7-year-old has a lot of moxie and is very funny.

It's slang, Amanda. "Moxie," according to my dictionary, means "Native shrewdness or common sense."

I LOVED IT! It's my favorite movie after Almost Famous and Back to the Future, but I don't think it was cute at all. It was dramatic with some funny moments. I thought it was funny when Rita the lawyer was yelling at the phone, "HOME!" and it kept saying, "Dialing office." She could've just dialed the little numbers right there!
My favorite part of the movie though was the whole Beatles theme running through. That was very clever. I didn't like the remakes though.

Anyway, when this movie first came out, all the preps in my HS all went to see it. The next day in art class (while I'm busy painting John), they actually (gasp!) talked to me...lol. I just watched it this weekend on Starz and oh, my gorshk, I loved it! THE most touching part was when Lucy was on the stand and Sam was watching her on a big monitor from another room, and she was asked something about doesn't she need more than her daddy can give.....there was a pause and then she said, "All you need is love." and Sam kissed the monitor. Amazing scene! this little girl was a great actress. this movie is a must for any Beatles fan.

I saw I Am Sam in the theater with my mom, but she's not a huge Beatles fan. But even she was crying and singing the songs by the time the credits were rolling. I thought it was a great movie, well-written and well-acted. There are soooo many Beatles references, like when they find out that Rita is going to be their lawyer and Lucy points out that she'll be good luck because her name is Rita, like Lovely Rita, and Harrison, like George. And the part when Sam goes to see Lucy at school and they play Blackbird and he's up the tree, with the little paper airplane... oh, it's soooo sweet.

And the "All you need is love" scene with the TV.

I'm getting carried away!!!

I rented I Am Sam a few months ago, and while the Beatle references held my interest, I have to say honestly that I didn't care too much for the movie overall. Some of the covers on the soundtrack are passable, but I have a thing about people covering Beatles' songs; i.e., I generally don't like them. But to each his/her own. For anyone who hasn't yet seen the movie but would like to, rent it and make up your own mind.

i just rented it and watched it because of this thread, and i have to say i really enjoyed it! it was pretty touching, and it was great how sam used those little beatles stories as analogies to his own situation. i work with mentally handicapped people, and i thought the movie was done very well.

i didn't really like the beatles covers, though...i guess i'm a stickler for originals. i think the main thing is that the songs couldn't get any better the way they were in the first place.

I think I Am Sam is a good movie. I juts don't like that the beatles's songs are sang by other singers, and I wonder why don't they set it in film as original versions. The movie's director is a Beatles fan I think. One thing I can't understand is why he has John's poster on the door.

I have a bit of behind the scenes trivia/gossip on this film. George didn't give his authorization to use any of his songs because of how Sean treated Madonna back in the days of "Shanghai Surprise", when they (Sean & Madonna) were still married. At least, I think that was when they were still married. I really don't know if this story is true, but there are no George songs on there as proof. I also have the soundtrack. I bought it after I saw the movie in the theater. I think the good covers outweigh the bad. Overall, I think it's really good. graemlins/thumbsup2.gif graemlins/thumbsup2.gif

<font size="2" face="Tahoma, Arial, sans-serif">I heard the same thing. The Bonus Footage of the DVD says something like that. That the movie was approved by Paul and Yoko, but that they couldn't understand why George wouldn't watch it, and of course, then they found out he was sick.

It also said, that if they would've used the original versions of the songs, that it would've cost more money than it cost to make the film! (Please refer to DVD for exact words, LOL)

I've seen bits and pieces of this movie and it's a very good movie. I love the Beatle references and the soundtrack is great (Wallflowers doing I'm Looking Through You and Ben Harper's version of Strawberry Fields are both awesome!). Hola amigos:

I recommend I am Sam 100% !

I bought this movie because of all Beatles reference , but I must say it capture my heart. It is a lovely and sad story. images/icons/frown.gif

Sean Penn is great he made a wonderful job that you forgot that he's acting.

Look for the Special Features part:

For the research for the movie about disable people the director (she's a female) went to a special institution where disable people work and live. She asked them What are their favorite music or Who are their favorite singers? all say The Beatles. You can see these wonderful people, almost everyone are young, respond to that question.

All these special people that are pure at heart knows how wonderful The Beatles are.

I loved this movie (I saw it in the theaters when it came out) and I would recommend it to everyone! I wanted to see it because I have done volunteer work with people with developmental disabilities (like the main character Sam and his friends in the film have) and was glad that this film showed people with developmental disabilities in a positive light. I also liked the way that it depicted some of the real things that they must face each day. It was a great film! And the underlying Beatles theme made it even better! It was a real plus! I can't wait to get it on DVD and check out the interviews with the developmentally disabled adults! That sounds great! The soundtrack is decent too (though the cover versions of the songs are not quite as good as the boys' original versions.)

I guess it really helps to be a Beatles fan if you want to like "I am Sam", because most of us seem to love this movie while all the professional movie critics slammed it. Well, maybe not all of them, but I don't remember reading one good review for it. *shrug*

Anyway, for those of you who may be interested in knowing how good the covers are on the "I am Sam" soundtrack, I'm posting my opinion as based on this ratings system - 10/10 is the best (like the original versions), 1/10 is the worst (William Shatner singing "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds").

Here goes.

1. Two of Us - Aimee Mann & Michael Penn 8/10
2. Blackbird - Sarah McLachlan 9/10
3. Across the Universe - Rufus Wainwright 6/10
4. I'm Looking Through You - The Wallflowers 9/10
5. You've Got to Hide Your Love Away - Eddie Vedder 8/10

6. Strawberry Fields Forever - Ben Harper 2/10
7. Mother Nature's Son - Sheryl Crow 5/10
8. Golden Slumbers - Ben Folds Five 10/10
9. I'm Only Sleeping - The Vines 5/10
10. Don't Let Me Down - Stereophonics 8/10
11. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds - Black Crowes 7/10
12. Julia - Chocolate Genius 3/10
13. We Can Work It Out - Heather Nova 6/10
14. Help! - Howie Day 2/10
15. Nowhere Man - Paul Westerberg 4/10
16. Revolution - Grandaddy 3/10
17. Let It Be - Nick Cave 2/10<font size="2" face="Tahoma, Arial, sans-serif">very interesting how the most "popular" artists have a higher rating.

Heeeey, I didn't intentionally give higher ratings to more popular musicians. It's just my honest opinion of each song. I'm not very familiar with most of these artists.. Like you, I'd never heard of Chocolate Genius or Howie Day before but after listening to their tracks on "I Am Sam", I'll probably never pick up their CDs, lol. Anyway, Aimee Mann & Michael Penn got a high rating, Wainwright did okay, Stereophonics received an 8/10, Heather Nova did alright with 6/10, and Ben Folds Five got my highest rating - and none of them are very "popular" IMO.

If any of you have got the soundtrack, I'd be very interested in reading your thoughts on the covers images/icons/smile.gif

I liked the Wallflowers cover of "I'm Looking Through You". I'm not a huge fan of Beatles covers, but I thought their version was cute!
