Good Evening all,
Following on from my little story in the Main Discussion of how I got into the Beatles, does anyone have any info on the Sgt Pepper musical with the Bee Gees and whether it is easy to get hold of.

I've got the songtrack on LP and it sounds pretty awful to be honest.

The movie was rather lame. Only a few of the songs covered were worth listening to, like Aerosmith's "Come Together" and Alice Cooper's version of "Because". The worst effort put forth was Earth, Wind & Fire doing "Got To Get You Into My Life".

Got to agree with that. I don't like beatle-covers too much anyway.
Oh, thank you Sarge! Good luck for you in this month's contest! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

I have no idea exactly where to get Sgt Pepper the movie. I just happen to have it on video because I was at BJs Wholesale CLub with my mom and I saw it for 4 dollars, so I bought it for the heck of it. It's...ok, I wouldn't spend much more then four dollars to buy it.

I never mustered the courage to rent that. I dunno..the Bee Gees and Beatle music...well, it just doesn't sit well with me. I remember, back in the day, that it didn't do well in the box office. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/tongue.gif

I remember one critic called it a "bloated cheeseburger" and a "90 minute McDonald's commercial." It is also listed in the book "Golden Turkeys: The Worst Movies of All Time."
I saw it once on HBO years ago, and in my honest opinion...

Thanks. I didn't know that there were Abbey Road songs in that movie. I'm disappointed "Within You Without You" wasn't in it. Then again I'd hate to hear anyone else sing that but George.

OMG, what an AWFUL movie! I remember going to see it when it came out, embarrassingly. Probably one of THE WORST Beatles-related films ever made...stupid excuse for a plot, lousy song covers, pathetic casting (the Bee Gees and PETER FRAMPTON? Excuse me?)
There's a wonderful article about this film debacle that appeared in Daytrippin' Magazine last year that might be worth seeking out...it's not available online, though. But it tells the whole story. You'll cringe! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/wink.gif

Amen! What a waste of film.
They had to get George Burns for the movie because no one else could act!

Wow. You are all pretty harsh here with your reviews.
I can understand why any "true" Beatle fan would have to say this one was bad, but IMO if you don't look at it as the BeeGees and Frampton are trying to BE the Beatles it was a creative movie.
It happened to be a favorite of mine. When it came out I was about 16 and it was, and still is, the only movie that I have seen multiple in the theater.
Two great covers came out of it, Come Together and Got To Get You Into My Life, and even tho Sandy Farina gave Strawberry Fields a different meaning I thought she sang it beautifully. I also thought she did a marvelous job on Here Comes The Sun. I always thought it was a shame she went right back to being a housewife after that movie.
But as a fantasy movie, which that certainly was, I thought it was good. Weren't any of you sad when Strawberry died?
I was thrilled when I was able to find it on video so my kids could watch it. They also loved it and as it turned out that was the movie that turned my youngest into the huge beatlemanic she (and I) are today.

I saw this movie once on tv, but when I say "saw" I am referring to only about the first 5 minutes!
As much as I quite like some of the BeeGee's songs, how could they conceive of silly idea, agree to star in a film not being actors, and ok a pretty terrible script???

I remember reading an article about this film in 'MOJO' a year or so ago (the film stinks by all accounts) and the inference was that the studio/distributor had, at that time, 'buried' the film in the hope that everyone would forget about it (it was a box-office flop, apparently). However, now that the DVD revolution has arrived and all sorts of rubbish is being re-issued, I'd expect to see a re-release sooner rather than later!
On the subject of the soundtrack LP, call me a masochist but I'd love to hear the Frankie Howerd tracks, however bad they are! I wonder if anyone would put them up on the web (are you listening EasternBird..)?

<font size="2" face="Tahoma, Arial, sans-serif">I actually liked "Got to Get You Into My Life," too! Maybe that's because I hadn't heard the Beatles version before I heard the EW&F version, so it really wasn't a case of living up to the Beatles. I got to enjoy the songs separately, since the styles of singing are pretty different.

And I know lots of people that think Aerosmith's version of 'Come Together' was fantastic. I am kinda curious if any of you are willing to give your reasons for disliking this movie so much other than bad covers.

It's been many years since I saw it on TV, but the main thing I remember is that it was excruciatingly boring--a bad movie that wasn't even a fun bad movie. I'm hugely into musicals, and I can say with confidence that these guys didn't know the first thing about how to integrate music into a plot.
First, you don't stop the action short sixty-two times so you can cram a song into the show, which is more or less what happened.
Second, it's always a bad idea to take a bunch of unrelated songs and try to create a plot out of them. Or to name a character "Strawberry Fields" just so you can sing the song--of course, the lyrics had nothing to do with the story or anything useful like that. Or to do something cheesily obvious, like having the sun come out during the song "Here Comes the Sun."
Third, who in their right mind would substitute Frampton and the Bee Gees for the Beatles? Ew! These guys were polar opposites of our heroes, and also they couldn't act worth a damn.

My only real disagreement with it is that Robert Stigwood doesn't get enough blame for this one. For being behind both this and the film ALL THIS AND WORLD WAR II, alluded to in the review above, there's a special place in the Nasty Hereafter for him... graemlins/devil7.gif

Well if there are any left, after I get to them, for them to go to the bargain racks I definitely think it is worth $5-6 bucks for anyone. I've seen Magic Christian,Candy, and How I Won the War and I certainly think, even without any of the actual Beatles in it, it's comparatable and an entertaining movie.

Oh another thought guys, compare this to the Rutles films where they are trying to be the beatles. I just recently watched the Rutles and found it funny, even tho I'm not a big fan of British humor, because the way it mirrored the Beatles own Anthology years before the fact. But the 'covers' the Rutles did I thought were awful. I didn't think the characteres were all that great either. But why is this movie such a rave when 'Pepper' wasn't even trying to be the beatles and it was a fantasy movie anyway? just curious, I have no problem with people not liking this, I'm still just surprised I am the only one that does.

I have no desire to see that film, and maybe should feel fortunate that I haven't yet (???) The Bee Gees (and pals) doing the Beatles' stuff is just something that I can't deal with! I think that it would be torture to have to sit through that! Ooh...and since reading through the soundtrack listings, I am now CERTAIN that I DON'T want to see it (hmmm...all of my least faves doing stuff by my faves that only the lads can do right...no thanks!!!) Wowa...got to go listen to some REAL Beatles music to get thoughts of Bee Gees out of my head....

And I fully appreciate your right and privilege to stand against the flood that goes the other way on this effort. If you found something redeeming in this, hey.
Perhaps Andy Warhol got it wrong; it wasn't that everyone would be famous for 15 minutes, it was that everyone would provide a performance that sticks around for 15 minutes, just long enough to get at least one fan to support it unto death or passage into the public domain, whichever comes first. And I'm sure out there, there's someone who cherishes their director's cut of GLITTER, and there's someone else waiting with baited breath for GIGLI to come to HBO. It's a big enough universe out there to support all the fans of all the films; let's just live and let live.

well thank you JD for the support, I guess I'm not only a fighter for the underdog but a glutton for punishment. I will continue to enjoy this movie as well as the 30 other ones I have of/or concerning the Boys. I think another reason I liked this movie was at the time I wasn't that aware of The Beatles as people and I was a fan of the Bee Gee's and Peter Frampton. So the stars were just aligned right for the connection I guess.

I would suggest you find a copy of an early album of theirs, ODESSA. I was shocked when I found it in among my Dad's record collection, way in the back, around the time SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER SOUNDTRACK had been making it big. Frankly, I didn't know what Dad was thinking then...
This album, though, was actually worth a listen. This was from their earlier period, before they got caught in the grips of the monster Sister Disco (not my phrase, Pete Townshend's), and was actually a surprise if you didn't know about the group before they recorded "Stayin' Alive." Very soft, a bit mournful, and the harmonizing worked nicely here. If you can find a copy of ODESSA, give it a try.

My friend and I started watching this movie last Summer, and we only got about 20 mins. into it before we couldn't take it anymore images/icons/tongue.gif
George Burns dancing about gaily and singing "Fixing A Hole" to children just didn't work for me images/icons/tongue.gif (Not to mention that I can't stand the BeeGees)
Even if it wasn't for the awful music, I still doubt I could've handled it. I agree with whoever said that it was incredibly corny, especially naming characters after songs, etc.
Meh.

Well...I have never seen the movie, but I do have listened the soundtrack. In fact, I've got the whole thing (!) on CD. Now, in my opinion, almost all of the covers are disappointing...the worst that I can remember now, is "Because" by Alice Cooper...what is he doing there?? Is he singing? talking? joking? ugh. Nothing compared with the melodious harmonies of John, Paul and George.
"Oh! Darling!" by Robin Gibb is really weak compared with the strong voice of Paul in the original. The same with many other tracks.
But still, you can have a good time, if you don't take it too seriously.
