My brother in law and father in law critizied how we raise our son. Here is the condensed version of what happened:

My husband took our kids miniture golfing wityh his family. My son, who is autistic insisted on a pink golf club even though it was the wrong size. When he wouldn't listen to reason, my husband let him choose the color he wanted. His brother, who BTW doesn't have children and doesn't plan on having any, told us we are spoiling our son by letting him have his way. He's lucky I wasn't there because I would have ripped him a new one.

Later, my son got angry because his ball wouldn't go in the hole the first time. He had a fit and my father in law got annoyed and asked why he keeps acting like that.

No matter how many times we tell them that our son does things different, they don't get it and think all he needs is good old fashioned disapline. It's not that simple. It's hard to teach him right from wrong if he doesn't know the difference.

Awww, how sad, VB. My brother had a physical handicap growing up, & there were family members (aunts, uncles, grandparents) that just couldn't quite accept him. So I understand & my heart goes out to you! I would've let your son use the pink club, too!

VB, do your in-laws not understand anything about autism?
Maybe your hubby can educate them when things like that
happen. I imagine it probably would have been no big deal
about the golf club if they hadn't made such an issue of it.

I barely knew what autism was til I got on Links and you,
Marm, and Beatlebangs helped to educate the rest of us.

She lives in a different city (which is the main reason why the relationship didn't work out), so we can't hang out. I have no idea whether or not we'll be chatting online or on the phone. I'm okay with it of we don't, but it's always weird when someone's suddenly out of your life just like that. I've grown fond of her. PLUS - he's my baby brother, and I hate it when things suck for him. Am I my brother's keeper? Yes I am. Beware of darkness, bro.

The thing is, you can't explain things to them because it doesn't sink in. They have a hard time understanding things. You can tell them over and over about something and they won't get it.

Well I usually pick the movie cause he won't come with me to the store and since he was nice enough to come with me I figured I'd let him pick the flick.I was sooo wrong.

And we came home to find that George had ripped open my lunch box and eaten the leftover food inside then left a surprise on the floor for us. So much for our experiment on not closing him in the bathroom while we're gone. I wonder how much plastic wrap and lunch bag material we'll find in the next few days. The plan was for me to be finished packing so that I could begin my move to Des Moines Thursday (my older brother, who was living with my dad, has moved in with his girlfriend, so his room would now be occupied by me and Ringo Cat). I got everything organized in my apartment in Davenport, ready for us to go back and move December 1 (the earliest that my family will be available to assist me). And Thursday I loaded the necessities (my laptop computer with music, my clothing and Ringo Cat and her things) into my car and came up to Des Moines.

The trip was very difficult for RC; she cried the whole three hours. On arriving at Dad's, I was shown to my room and I did what I could to calm her down; she crawled under the bed into the farthest corner and sat with her face to the wall for most of the rest of the evening (broke my heart :cry3: ). She did come out overnight, when things quieted down (Dad's hard-of-hearing and, so, talks on the phone and plays his television very loudly). Friday Ringo Cat spent all day under the bed covers, but came out eventually to investigate the room ... until Dad came home. Saturday she was in and out of the bed covers throughout the day and she seems to be getting used to the noises of her new home.

The biggest negative of my current living situation is that my brother didn't fully move out of his old room; it's very cluttered with many of his belongings. As a hobby, he restores guitars, so there are guitar parts, woodworking equipment and painting supplies scattered all over. Basically, the only room for RC and me is the bed and the area immediately around it; Dad and my brother have arranged to have the rest of my things kept in a storage facility. Of course, I didn't expect to make Dad's home my own, but I'm disappointed and a bit shocked that I'm being allowed so little space.

I discussed my feelings with Dad and my brother and we're working things out, but it's been not easy. They're both very rough around the edges and have trouble understanding that the way I live and keep my living area is different from their style. They're trying to be accomodating and I appreciate IMMENSELY their help and the sacrifices they've made for me ... but the past few days have not been very fun.

... except for the chat Saturday; you all cheered me up :teeth1: THANKS! :thumbu2:

Good luck , Jes and Ringo, with adjusting to the new space. I have had to do the same, but I just moved back to my old room, and Mom and I are going to do what we can to fix up the old house as it is now a fixer-upper. Sounds like you could use some good modular shelves and drawers in the room, maybe a wall system of some kind. Maybe some of your brother's guitars that are the most intact could be mounted on the walls or stored in a way that they don't take up a lot of floor space. I myself have a double bed with plenty of space underneath for large flat clear plastic underbed boxes and a few Spacebags, but even a twin bed can still hide several of these.

Stupid expressions irritate me. I have never liked "thought to my/him/herself." Who else can you think to, your favorite Beatle? Seems redundant and just plain illogical to me.

Four irritating commercials:

1) Pantene with that auditory atrocity, "Inhibitions." That atrocious song is one I would not wish on anybody, not even Charles Manson!

2) A Ford SUV commercial where a man with an obnoxious girl who blathers away about being dropped off a block from the park because she thinks the SUV ain't a hybrid. I think the guy should make her walk! He did not have to drive her anywhere. I didn't like her tone or attitude.

3) A man and a silly girl are flying kites and the girl asks a lot of stupid questions and makes some really inane comments. To make a bad commercial worse, the silly git suggests that they fly their kites in the rain and closes with "maybe we should get our umbrellas." I don't like that way the girl says such stupid things and comes across as a proper fool!

4) Mastercard where a silhouette of a woman is being followed by an ugly piggy bank. The swine increases in size wherever they go, e.g. cab, hotel, etc. The ugly pig is bad enough, but that irritating whistling makes a bad commercial even worse.

We took my brother back to college yesterday and now it's really quiet again. After we got back from taking him, I looked in his room and I had tears welling in my eyes. We have one guy who sits about 2-3 cubicles away from me. I get to hear everything that happens to him on a daily basis about 5-10 times because he has to tell everyone who stops by his cubicle & everyone he talks to on the phone. :laugh5:

I'm not sick anymore, but I have a cold. So annoying.
We took my brother back to college yesterday and now it's really quiet again. After we got back from taking him, I looked in his room and I had tears welling in my eyes. Just typing this makes me want to cry! I miss him so much when he's not here. He doesn't know how much. Yes, even though he orders me around and gives me crap, I miss him very much.
Aw, if he wasn't giving you crap, he wouldn't be doing

The big clear-out happens Thursday; my mom (who I haven't seen in three years (?!?! :bigeyes3: ) is coming down for a long weekend then and wants to tackle eradicating the junk from this glorified storage room ... I hope she knows to leave Ringo Cat.

Once they made me run for 15 minutes but I was weakened by the recent ilness so I felt terrible and nearly fainted. After that they put me in the easy PE group. And now we do aerobics mostly. But I still don't like it because something they make us do something difficult.

According to the book I read, the bodies were initially left in a barn, but Anastasia was still alive, though wounded. Someone got her out of there and hid her. The book included lots of childhood stories and photos, but those, I imagine, could have been published before the Revolution (you say you want a revolution?) and just retold. Interesting story, though. A woman who claimed for years to be Anastasia passed away just a few years ago, may have been her who wrote this book.

I just found out that my cousin, Eddie, hung himself this morning.
I was helping my mom get groceries out of the car, and she just blurted “You know Eddie?” and I went “Yeah, Bob’s nephew” and she just looked away and said “They found him dead this morning.”
See, Eddie isn’t blood related to me. He’s my cousin Jess’s cousin on her dad’s side, but our families are really close knit and everyone one my side of the family just always referred to Eddie (and any other kid from that side of the family) as a cousin and all the adults as aunts or uncles.
After hearing from my mom, I called Jess about 7 times and she just finally got back to me now. Poor thing, she’s a wreck. Her whole family is, and Eddie’s mom is a complete mess.

My friend's brother hung himself last year. It was so painful to see her at that time - I'm glad she got over this terrible loss at last.

Please send some good vibes are way, ok? :sad1:
How awful, Marm, so sorry to hear this. His poor parents
must be in shock. How old was Eddie, Marm?

Yeah, that's terribly sad to give up on life so young.
He must have been in such pain. For some people,
it's too much. And I do think young people are more
susceptible to suicide because they often don't have the
ability to see beyond the crisis and that there will be a
time when life will be good again. For some of us, that
ability comes with maturing and a changing perspective, if
that makes sense.

Glad it's getting easier for your family now, Marm.
