Hey all, has anyone seen "The Beatles - The First U.S. Visit" video or DVD? I just saw a promo for it and it looks really good! The picture quality looked very nice too. I'm thinking of buying it - does anyone have any thoughts on it?

It is good. Nice picture; nice sound. The DVD doesn't have great bonuses, but still it's excellent to have the Ed Sullivan stuff on DVD.

I just rewatched it on VHS and I recommend it. You get the press conference, the three Sullivan performances, them posing for photos around New York (minus George), them on the train, in the hotel where they speak with Murray the K. Two interesting bits:
1. A shot of Lennon using a mouth organ (?) to peform what sounds very much like what would later become the intro to Strawberry Fields (this was in 1964).
2. If you've seen The Rutles you'll remember a scene with them listening to Bill Murray the K talking about how the Rutles will be with him tomorrow talking about their trousers - "Do you know about this?" "No, I don't know anything about this". The First US Visit contains an almost exact recreation of this scene with Paul in the limo hearing "That's right, the Beatles will be in this studio tomorrow night reading their own poetry" Paul: Wha-? We are? Do you know about this?

I love the part where they're in Miami and Paul keeps giving Ringo these paintings from the hotel walls. And then in a cute voice he's says something like "I've drawn a picture of you" "I've drawn another one" and they're all abstract things with something that could be seen as Ringos nose.
And the other part in the same city where they tell Ringos to start packing. "Ringo, Packing!" in a sing songy voice. Paul brings in a deck chair and they pretend to put it in Ringos suitcase. And I think Paul asks Ringo or George if he has anymore room and Ringo/George holds open his coat pocket and they try to shove a shirt in.
There are some quite funny scenes on the train too.

I'm with BigLou!
It's nice to see the Beatles just be four guys from Liverpool!
You get a little sneak peek at who they were as people, as well as what it was like to be a Beatle.
Some parts are so funny, too! I recommend it!

My favorite part was when John and George did that bit with the cigarettes in the train.

Thanks, everyone! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/smile1.gif I'm sold (though it didn't take much convincing)! In the promo I saw, the Beatles were doing a press conference, then you see them watching that same exact press conference on TV. It was so neat to see them watching themselves and reacting to it! It really looked good.

My special girl sent this to me some time ago, and I enjoyed watching it, mainly because of its authenticity... it shows The Beatles in person; how they really were. And that's always good material for a movie. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif Plus I agree with biglou's quote:

I love it, love it, love it, yeah, yeah, yeah! I have the video and the dvd. It is excellent.
There's this one scene when the Beatles are hanging out in their hotel room and John plays "Strawberry Fields" on a melodion (sp). It's eerie, considering that was a 1967 classic and John was forming the musical foundation for it in 1964!
JUST GET THIS FILM. IT IS EXCELLENT AND YOU WILL LOVE IT! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/thumbsup2.gif

YES!! THIS IS A MUST-HAVE!! I think it's the closest thing we'll see to the Beatles in the early days, unscripted. It's hilarious too, and such a joy to see how excited - and a little nervous - they are to be in America. One of my favourite parts is how Paul carries that transistor radio EVERYWHERE and how excited he is throughout the movie; almost like a little kid! Aww!

WOOHOO! I just got my copy today, and it's fantastic, just like everyone said! It's so neat to see the full Ed Sullivan appearances, and there are some very funny scenes. I loved the whole bit on the train, and the performance in Washington where they had to keep turning the drum kit around! And that really does sound like "Strawberry Fields" that John is playing. It's a great video. Thanks for all the reviews! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/thumbsup2.gif

Ok, I did this last night, as I have many times, but how many of you (especially those who never saw the Ed Sullivan Show or anything comparable to that) watch this movie and act like a squealing little fan? It's fun to do occasionally, I can only do it when the house is empty or I'm sure my mom would want to lecture me on the oddity of such behavior.

I did!! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/girl2.gif Unfortunately, my mother was home, and she came in to ask what I was giggling at! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/blush4.gif I couldn't help it - you just get so caught up in it. Love this video! As people have said, it's a wonderful chance to see the Beatles without the script! Did anyone catch the bit where George requests the song "Got My Mind Set On You" from Murray the K? I thought that was pretty funny -- he must have liked that song from way back, considering he covered it later on in his life!
It's also wonderful to have all the Ed Sullivan performances in one place -- it wasn't until this video that I'd seen the later ones, the ones they did from Miami. VERY cool! And yes, I do sit there and squeal like a little kid...can't help it, it's fun to get caught up in that! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/dance.gifhttp://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/dance.gifhttp://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/dance.gifhttp://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/dance.gif

What I'm worried about is how my roomie will react if she comes back to the room when I'm watching this one at college. I might scare her. hehe. I'm hoping I get a room mate that likes the Beatles.
