That's the only Billy Joel song I like. I noticed that he did not mention RFK but I love the part about British Beatlemania in his 1989 song! :thumbu2:

Two teachers during my schooling at separate occassions had us "study" that song. The first came in 8th grade when the teacher couldn't get past World War II in our History class so on the last day of school he brought out the overhead projector and played the song with lyrics on screen. Once he was finished he said "There now you know about everything that happened from World War II on."
The second teacher was in 10th grade and he played the song for the same reasons as the other teacher, but he made us get in teams and look up the events and people listed. Of course he's the same teacher that let us watch Monty Python and the Holy Grail when we were discussing the renaissance.
I had some really cool history teachers.

You really did! WOW! :teeth1:
The only time I had a cool history teacher was the morning after John Lennon had died. We sat around the entire class discussing the Beatles & how they changed our world! Best day in History I ever had!!! :laugh5:

My English teacher had us listen to that song and we studied it. I really like it and the video is pretty cool too.

That's awesome that so many teachers used the song as a study tool. I went to school in the old days. We didn't have the song!

One thing I noticed in the video was the 50's mom popping pills.

That is a really nice thing for the teacher to do. When George died my choir teacher said that she couldn't teach and put on Mr Holland's Opus and went into her "office". Of course then when the part about John dying came in to the movie and one of the students asked how he died everyone turned to me and I explained it and then proceeded to start bawling. I think everyone thought I was totally unbalanced at that point.
There was also the time that my government teacher told us about when the Beatles first appeared on Ed Sullivan on the 3rd of January 1963 and I couldn't hold back the smart alec comment. I raised my hand and corrected him. That served to outline all future interactions between myself and that man. Of course that is what you get when you HAVE to give the football coach a job at the school in order to pay him.

Wow fun song! ANd I thought give peace a chance would be hard to sing along.
Reminds me of a time my friend Gin (shes a sometimes member here actually) and I were telling our friend Chris about how scary we thought Billy Joel's eyes were when we were in a record store and could see his eyes on an album cover as we were walking down the stairs. Chris was listening to Eleanore Rigby at the time and halfway through he cut us off and was like "wow your story really fits the song!'

Yeah, I think when John died there was a lot of unbalance! :laugh5: I was amazed at how it affected everyone. When George died, I felt like I was the only one out of wack! :laugh5:
& good for you for teaching the teacher! :laugh5: :laugh5: :laugh5:

I felt like the only one too, until I came on to Beatlelinks that night. I was bawling all morning but my mom still made me go to school and the first thing my best friend said to me when he picked me up was "I heard about George, are you ok?" I was crying intermittently at school and some of my other friends were openly mocking me for being so torn up about it. That was a really tough day.

I had the same thing happen when John died as I was a Senior in High School then. I was teased about being a Beatles fan... sheesh!

No one really teased me before George died, except because the teachers liked to talk with me about the Beatles. It ain't easy being a nerd. :wink1:
