That's an italian article I'll translate http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif
(so sorry for the mistakes)

They wanted to film "The Lord Of The Rings"

The "Lord Of The Rings"? Yes, the Beatles 30 years ago wanted to realize a movie about that. It's been revealed by Denis O'Dell, who should have been the producer. The Fab Four asked David Lean to be the director. When he refused, they gone to Stanley Kubrik, who discouraged them: in his opinion it was impossible to make a movie from that novel.

Lean, yet interested in the project, was busy with a "little romance movie filmed in Ireland": it was "Ryan's Daughter", which won the Oscar.

In the beat-version of "The Lord Of The Rings", John Lennon, who already thought of the soundtrack, would have been Gandalf the magician (Peter Jackson, in the nowdays verstion). The "hobbit" Frodo Baggins' role would have been instead of McCartney.

Denis O'Dell, friend of the Beatles in the 60s, and now still in touch with Paul McCartney, will publish the next month his memories' book: "At the Apple's Core", where, besides of "The Lord Of The Rings" story, he tells his version about the band's break up.

I can't believe it! I like Tolkien very much, but I can't imagine how it would have been this movie if the Beatles had made it...and Paul it would had been a great Frodo http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/wink.gif

The producers of the film Jesus Christ Superstar had originally planned for John to be cast as Christ. Conflictions arose and they ended up using Ted Neely.

I've heard about this before and that the casting was supposed to be like this:

John=Gollum
Paul=Frodo
George=Gandalf
Ringo=Sam

(This is what's listed in Beatles at the Movies by Roy Carr.)

I've heard that version as well. After hearing it, I went back and read the books while imagining that Ringo, etc. were in their characters and it makes it even better. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/thumbsup.gif

How many Beatles does it take to change a light bulb?
4: John to come up with a light bulb,
Paul to claim half of the light bulb,
George to complain his lights bulbs are never considered,
and Ringo, to actually change the light bulb.

Thanks for translating the article for us, Amalthea! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/thumbsup2.gif Hope you don't mind if I move this to Act Naturally. Probably should have done that last night, but I was too tired after my first day of working nights to moderate properly. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/wink.gif

Yeah, John wanted Yoko to play the part of Mary Magdalene, but they objected.

I'd heard that too....no offense, but Ted Neely and the original Mary Magdalene did a great job...that movie has been the best seller of all time here in Chile http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/grin.gif

And it's such a great movie! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

I am happy with those actors, more than happy... a masterpiece, and a Yoko would have ruined it with her not being an actress, and less of all, a flower children.

So, better so http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

The Beatles wanted Patrick McGoohan to direct the film as well. For me, the fact that this union didn't happen is up there with the Beatles session with Elvis not being recorded.

Yes, I just re-read this the other night in Pete Shotton's book, too. This would have been so cool!

Yeah, and to make it even cooler would be to have some Beatle music in the background. How about the Tolkein movie set to Beatles?

I think that using ol' green and mystic Scotland with the forests and mountains and lakes, would have been a great set! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif
