Film director admits being naive over including Beatles songs
Director Jessie Nelson says she was naive to include Beatles tunes in her new film, I Am Sam.
Nelson and co-writer Kristine Johnson thought they would get permission to use the original recordings.
Instead they had to settle for a series of cover versions by artists such as Nick Cave and Sheryl Crow.
I Am Sam stars Sean Penn as a mentally handicapped father with a passion for the Fab Four.
Nelson said: "I'm unbelievably naive and thought 'I'll get 12 of them, put the songs all through the script. They'll give them to us. I had no idea how complicated that is and how expensive it is."
Penn said he was not disappointed the movie contained no original Beatles recordings.
"I thought it was too easy. I remember resenting "Imagine" in The Killing Fields because I'm crying, but I cried the first time I heard it, without the movie," he said.
"If you just put Beatles songs throughout, people can close their eyes, open their eyes, in either case, it's an enjoyable experience. I like that the music we have is different and challenges a little bit."
I Am Sam, which co-stars Michelle Pfeiffer, opens in the US today.
