Film director admits being naive over including Beatles songs

Director Jessie Nelson says she was naive to include Beatles tunes in her new film, I Am Sam.

Nelson and co-writer Kristine Johnson thought they would get permission to use the original recordings.

Instead they had to settle for a series of cover versions by artists such as Nick Cave and Sheryl Crow.

I Am Sam stars Sean Penn as a mentally handicapped father with a passion for the Fab Four.

Nelson said: "I'm unbelievably naive and thought 'I'll get 12 of them, put the songs all through the script. They'll give them to us. I had no idea how complicated that is and how expensive it is."

Penn said he was not disappointed the movie contained no original Beatles recordings.

"I thought it was too easy. I remember resenting "Imagine" in The Killing Fields because I'm crying, but I cried the first time I heard it, without the movie," he said.

"If you just put Beatles songs throughout, people can close their eyes, open their eyes, in either case, it's an enjoyable experience. I like that the music we have is different and challenges a little bit."

I Am Sam, which co-stars Michelle Pfeiffer, opens in the US today.

ooh I didn't know it was out yet. I'll have to check that out.

I agree with what Penn said though putting a song that has such emotion involved in it already is like forcing the audience into feeling the emotion you intended them to feel in the scene.

I'm remember hearing "Jealous Guy" for the first time when I was watching "Look Who's Talking Too" and I've loved the song ever since. I know George's song "Got My Mind Set On You" was in that movie as well.

I love the scenes in Mr Holland's Opus especially the Beautiful Boy, we watched that in school a few days after George's death and that whole scene just made me start crying.

I saw a preview for this movie and they had a scene with characters walking across a street marked like Abbey Road.

I also first heard "Jealous Guy" on Look Who's Talking Too. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif At that time though I didn't know John sang it...I didn't even know who John Lennon was then (I was 13 and into other things) The Beatles came two years later for me. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif Anyway, I haven't seen I Am Sam in the papers yet, (I thought it came out on the 28th), I didn't see a review for it in Friday's paper. Oh well, I'm sure it'll be out soon. I'm looking forward to seeing it, along with The Majestic.
