Does anyone happen to know what the heck George Harrison is saying in the train scene in A Hard Days Night right before he says " I don't know but I thought it just sounded distinguished" and Lennon responds "George Harrison esquire...." or something to that effect. Also When Ringo and George are passing by the pretty girl in the cab of the train and George says "well, you going in then?" Ringo responds "no, she'll only regect me in the end, thats why I play drums its my ----------------factor." What does Ringo say there? Liverpoodlian is so hard to understand sometimes.

George's line is "None of your five-bar-gate jumps and over sort of stuff" (as far as I can remember...I need to watch it again!).
The bit with Ringo and the pretty girl...isn't that bit where he comments that it will play havoc with his drum skins? I know the bit you mean though with the factor line and I can't quite remember what it is....ummmm.....compensatory factor??? I'll have to go and have a looky!!

Hmm. I do know George says "I dunno, I thought it sounded distinguished like" and John replies, "George Harrison: the scouse with distinction." Hope that helps a bit. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

Right I'm pretty sure that the Ringo-factor line is "it's my act of compensatory factor".
The George one before the distinguished business is what I said before....I don't know how I remembered that but I checked before and that is what it is!

I think he says another word there too. I'm not sure, but it sounds like "me act of compensatory factor" or "active compensatory factor." The first phrase might make more sense, actually. And you're right, Lucy, obviously we need to watch it again! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

Okay...here we have it!
I just did a big web-geek thing and looked up the script online.....
RINGO: Yeah, I know, that's why I took up play the drums. It's me active compensatory factor.
This is a direct quote from the original script.
Yay!!!

Yes, thank you Lucy. I was going to go rent the movie otherwise (it became one of those weird things that was going to bug me until someone came up with the definite answer). http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

Thanks for the info Lucy. I don't quite know what that means ( Me active compensatory factor) but may be were not suppossed to. Alot of Beatle sayings and language doesn't make a lot of sense to us North Americans. Does any body else have Beatle speak they think is wierd or don't quite understand?

John packed so many puns into his writings that you have to read them slowly in order to puzzle them out. That's due to John's wit, though, not the Liverpudian dialect.

Ward I think I might sort of know what that line means....well kind of anyway!! He has just complained to George(?) that Paul's Grandad doesn't like him because he is little and George says that Ringo has an inferiority complex. Beating the drums is his active way of compensating for that complex.....does that sound right? That is how I would use it anyway!!
I agree that heaps of what they say makes little or no sense at all (that is all part of the fun though http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/wink.gif)....just look at that famous line that John was thought to say: "You have a lucky face". Ummmmmm okay.

Thanks Lucy. That now makes sense to me. But the George line is all whacked out. It may be what he says but I think George might have been into the drink that day (Ha, ha).

IMO Ringo and George are making fun of psychobabble...
Such as George with the shirts where they're making fun of the trendsetters/reporters.
