Heres one sure to get the blood boiling although a tad unfair since we all Beatles fans.

Brits:

Beatles
Rolling Stones
The Who
Kinks
Pink Floyd
Led Zeppelin
Queen
David Bowie
Genesis
Dire Straits
Duran Duran
Oasis

Yanks:

Buddy Holly
Beach Boys
Bob Dylan
The Byrds
Frank Zappa
Aerosmith
Bruce Springsteen
Metallica
REM
Nirvana
Beck

- Brits have generally the best sound but Americans have more variety. British have become more derivative during the last decades, I don't know how long that will last.

The Knopfler brothers and the rest of the original band are very English from origin.

They are?

I'm sorry, then I should put Bruce Springsteen in their place.

(I don't listen to all of them)

The big question... can the Fabs trump Bob Dylan?

I think Dylan is on par with George and John and the Beatles in general but in a different way but for me personally he is way above Macca however over all I think the Brits come off better but I have to say that cos I am a Brit :teeth1:

I've always been fifty-fifty on this one, both countries produced and keep on producing the best of the best. I personally think Beatles trump everyone. Dylan's in his own category. BadLittleKid has a nice representative list of both countries. America probably has the best jazz musicians but if you're talking rock music, thank god for the UK!

I'd say the Brits win out because on the whole bands (pop stars not included) become popular in Britain because of the publics response to the band. America finds a band with a following, makes them hugely popular and then finds unpopular bands with attractive members to fuel the frenzy for the style until the style fizzles out. It's not the rule but it does happen.

Well I'd say Britain because most of the bands i like came from there (Beatles, Stones, Who, etc) Although i like quite a few American bands (doors, byrds, jefferson airplane etc) I like the music that the british bands made more.

This is a really tough one to call as both have produced some incredible acts and I suppose it depends on the individuals taste.

My personal favourites are The Beatles and Bob Dylan with Springsteen up there too, so I'd like to sit on the fence at the moment, although for me the best band around at the minute is Kings of Leon, so I'll have to be a traitor and go with America for now!

Oh, I'm Dean by the way, it's my first day of posting, be gentle.

Britain. It's as simple as that.

nobody mentioned the people who inspired the british invasion, which yes I agree took rock to new places.
Elvis, BB King, Howlin' Wolf, Motown Supremes, Temptations, 4 tops.

For me its America. Bob Dylan is god and no one can touch him. Not even the Beatles and George agreed!!! Also Johnny Cash, Tom Petty and although not a fan..Elvis. Without Elvis no Beatles...someone famous said that.
