View Full Version : 60s UK TV appearances..

If you've ever wondered why on things such as Anthology there's so little to no footage of the performances from such things a Thank Your Lucky Staer, etc. it's a simple and sad reason.
Most of these no longer exist, appearantly. The UK networks in the 60s(ATV,BBC) would scrap tapes of old shows to save space, and of course back then it wasn't thought that 40 years later there would be interest in the Beatles' TV appearances.

This week, the Beatles greatest hits album, 1, is at number seventy-five on the USA album charts. Wingspan: Hits and History by Paul McCartney is at number seventy-six.

Not all is lost, though. Dave Clark of the Dave Clark Five owns the rights to the "Ready Steady Go" shows, and you can still see those Beatle (and other musicians') appearances.

Dave Clark was a VERY canny businessman -- he also owns all the rights to his own music, and that's why there's only been one release of a "Best of the Dave Clark Five" CD...and only when demand was so high there was no other choice for him. He was smarter than a lot of the other artists of his time -- made sure he got his piece of the pie, unlike the Beatles, who have NEVER owned their own music, unfortunately...(at least their music as a group, I mean).

Dave Clark was indeed a very astute businessman. His business acumen came in handy. Years ago I read about how he maintained the rights to his work and the name, "Dave Clark 5." I have seen him being interviewed in recent years and he always gives a very good interview.
I liked the DC-5 since I was little. I loved "Glad All Over," "Bits & Pieces," and "Try Too Hard." Even so, they still don't top the Beatles, but then NOBODY can!

They do--in fact the BBC is advertising on their website if you have ANY pre 1980 BBC TV films contact them so they can put it in their archives. Also sad-there are still 109 lost episodes of Doctor Who.

HMV..you are right on Davre Clark's business sense. Especially when you consider o many 60s acts that had #1 hits and only got a £10-£15 studio fee out of it.
