How can this keep happening? Brian Wilson is no longer part of them.... Dennis and Carl are gone.... even Al Jardine is no longer part of the band - no?

Even WITH Mike Love and Jardine, without the Wilson Brothers (Carl and Brian at the very least) it's not The Beach Boys!

Ugh. Let it go guys!

I think Mike Love has the right to use the Beach Boys name he co-wrote a few hits. I mean look where they're playing, give him a break and I think people wanna hear BB music even if second hand, come on it's Summertime!
(I was gonna say ML is an egotist, from what I've read, but I don't like to make character judgements about someone I don't know personally) :teeth1:

Who is still in The Beach Boys, anyway? Is it just Mike Love (who does, btw, happen to think he's on-par with the likes of Lennon and McCartney.... :laugh5: )?

If I want to hear The Beach Boys, I'll play the albums!

I'm of the belief that if you add or subtract a member from a band, you should change the name. Particularly if the lead singer leaves.

Wings should have had six different names, but they only had two.

I agree with you for the most part. But bands like The Rolling Stones or The Who need not change their name because a member leaves/dies.

As for Wings... so long as Paul was there, the band was always remain Wings. Henry McCulloch... Denny Siewell.... Joe English, etc., etc... Their presence was not integral. But once Paul left, there was no Wings.

Bands like Led Zeppelin, on the other hand, could never continue without one of the original members. Same with The Beatles.

But back to the band in question....

The Beach Boys stopped being The Beach Boys, IMO, when Brian bowed-out. I know this can be argued. So if not with Brian's absence, then definitley when Carl passed away they were no longer as they always were. The Beach Boys were defined by that sound that they achieved through their vocal harmonies. Remove too many of those separate voices from the whole and forget it - it's not the same.

OK, how about this.

Each version is numbered like software releases. Since Wings went through I think six variations we start out with the 71 Original as Wings, the 72 version Wings 2.0 etc.......Wings 79 6.0. :teeth1:

Or maybe with each minor change like Geoff Britton would be 2.1.

Now the Beach Boys had to have over 10 combos......oh forget it.:laugh5:

I thought Carl did a solid job after Brian's breakdown.

Brian was the songwriting genius, agreed, but the boys were still solid live without him. No, not the same, but certainly worthy.

I agree that Mike Love has the right to use the name. I read on the Beach Boys website that he has licensed the name and that also Bruce Johnston is part of the band. So that is still two members of the original band (yes Bruce may not have been an original but he was a member quite long).

I would have mixed feelings though to watch a band on stage where 2 of the 8 musicians on stage - Randell Kirsch, John Cowsill, Tim Bonhomme, Chris Farmer, Scott Totten and Mike Kowalski - are from the original band but are using the original band's name.

Like Brian Wilson who is performing just with his own name and I saw him in concert which was an awesome performance with ofcourse many Beach Boys songs and I would not have felt the same had he used the Beach Boys name.

Al Jardine and the Endless Summer Band features Matt Jardine on vocals and percussion, Adam Jardine on vocals, Billy Hinsche on keyboard, Ed Carter on bass, Bobby Figueroa on drums, Craig Copeland on guitar, Tom Jacob on keyboard and organ, and Richie Cannata on sax. Another group configuration is called the Al Jardine Family & Friends Beach Band and includes the same lineup above, but with the addition of Carnie and Wendy Wilson.

It is a business after all and he who owns the right has the right. And, he who has the cash will have the final say on whether the band will remain an ongoing business.

When was the last Beach Boys album released?
If Mike Love wants to prove his current band worthy then get them in the studio and see what they produce.

When was the last Beach Boys album released?

I believe the last non-compilation album is L.A. (Light Album) released March 1979.

This sounds like Chrysler without Dodge and Plymouth - the vital parts are missing and there ain't enough steam to go on.

Always loved these guys, but I confess I never liked 1988's "Kokomo" and thought that one a proper stinker.
