Hey guys! This came on last night on Turner Classic Movies. I taped it and watched parts of it, 'cause I had stuff to do. But I thought it was good, what I saw of it and that John was soo adorable in it!

I want to see it. I've seen the scenes on the anthology videos, with John in them, and I laughed like a good'en.

A little bit of trivia: John's appearance in that movie was the first time we saw him in wire-rimmed frames! It was quite a change from his other eyeglasses. Of course, that style became all the rage almost overnight.

Actually, I thought that, 'How I Won The War' wasn't very good. I recorded it off the television a couple of years back, and somewhere in my dank mansion it's somewhere.

Personally, I think that the film only did well because of John's appearence, but I'm sure that nobody will agree on me on that one. Perhaps it's just a different taste sort of thing.

I'll only admit this to YOU, 'kat, I didn't buy a wig, I actually had my hair cut Beatles style! It was a pretty radical move at the time!

My dad wouldn't let me grow my hair that long back then, so I had to get me a Beatle wig. If you looked at me now though, some say I look like George. My hairstyle is Beatlesque, circa 1966.

You may think I'm posh LenMc, but I'm working on my Liverpudlian accent and I'm getting quite good at it.

Anyone got any jam butties?

That's funny, 'kat, 'cause I had long, long hair before I chopped it off Beatles-style and my father took a fit when he saw it!! It looked kind of cute, but I soon let it grow long again. Everyone wanted to look like Jane Asher in 1964! (I'm talking about the girls, of course. I have to qualify my comments here with all these wiseacres on line!!!!)

Hi :wave1:

Yeah, I feel about the same. I like John's acting; but the story is a bit weird :wink2: Too bad, that he didn't chose a film in which he could really show his potential...

This film was no oscar winner, but John was really good in it. I'm stickin' to it when I say John and George were the best actors out of the four of them. They were just more relaxed and natural.

True. I didn't think Paul could act his way out of a Dodge Dart. The man had such a magnitude of talent in other areas, but acting was the sphere in which he did not excel. I don't think Ringo was really much of an actor and he really played himself in the Beatle and solo movies.

John and George were the best actors of the 4. George - who could forget that boy with the wavy hair and those men's shirts! :laugh4: I can't see any of the other Beatles pulling off that scene and being nearly as convincing as our own moptop with the wavy hair.

John and Anna Quayle and John at the film's end with the old man...."...proper citizen of Boston...took a wrong turn...lonely old man from Liverpool." John would have made a WONDERFUL comedian!

JudithKristen

I loved all three of those parts... my faves in the film for certain.

AND, when John smiles after he says... "You're a lonely old man from Liverpool."

He knocked my socks off. :)

I also think that "How I won the war" is not an oscar-winner-film, but I highly enjoy the parts showing John in it :blush4:. On the whole I think that John and Ringo are the most funny ones in the movies, then George and Paul last.

I saw HIWTW about thirty years ago at a small independent cinema in Birmingham (England) as part of a Richard Lester season. I don't remember much about the plot but I was quite impressed by John's performance.

Changing the subject somewhat, I recently watched the film "That'll Be The Day" for the first time in ages and was bowled over by Ringo's hilarious performance. MUCH better than his turn in AHDN, and he wipes teenybopper idol David Essex off the screen whenever they appear together. Given the right roles I think he could have had a far more impressive acting career than he had. Ringo fans, if you haven't seen TBTD try to find it on DVD!

I found a VHS copy of HIWTW and I also have the novelization. I got the book first and didnt really understand it. When I got the movie I didnt totally understand that either, but I liked John's parts. That's the only time Ive watched it, so maybe sometime this summer I should watch it again. I still have it, after all :smile1:

I agree with your positive comments regarding John's unforgettable performance in 'How I Won The War', Snoopy. John was such a naturally fab man! I really think HE deserved to win an Oscar... :teeth1:

I agree. I rate Ringo the best actor of the four, and I think Dick Lester quickly twigged that during the filming of AHDN and turned the focus on him. That'll Be the Day confirms it for me. I saw it when it first came out in '72 or thereabouts. I didn't even know the film existed until I saw a poster advertising it in the Underground, with coloured drawings, not photos, and I thought 'That one looks a bit like Ringo'. Then I read the cast list underneath... It's a pity he didn't do more film work. However, amongst the popstars of that era, by far the best actor was Adam Faith.
