Well, Las Vegas has always a gambling city (well, since about 1905), but it was during the 1940s when the big mafia guys with money decided to start building the hotels there. It was about the 1960s when they realized they could really turn the city into a tourist attraction.

That pic was taken on the rooftop of the Sahara hotel. It was quite a nice hotel at the time (opened in 1952). But you can see there isn't much around it as it was built just outside the city limits.

Today the Sahara Hotel is no longer outside the city limits. In fact, it's well within them as Las Vegas has really grown in the last 40 years or so. The area surrounding the hotel is filled with much larger & fancier hotels as far as you can see. They have added to it many times since it's opening, so the Sahara Hotel, too, is larger & updated.
