Giuliano lists his needs from the city

By Joyce Miles
Lockport Union-Sun & Journal

— Geoffrey Giuliano is stepping up his campaign to win support for a Beatles museum at 735 Market St.
The offbeat celebrity biographer/musician/actor sent an outline of a working proposal for the museum to the Union-Sun & Journal this week, along with a mea culpa to locals who he might have offended in the past with his antics.
The proposal outline contains details about a Beatles memorabilia collection and a listing of the things property owner Sri Radhe International would seek from the City of Lockport in order to pull off the museum.
In a separately e-mailed statement, “to the People of Lockport,” Giuliano says he’s not the same guy they used to know when he lived here. The statement includes an apology to Lockport Police Department and Chief Neil Merritt, whose battles with Giuliano over 735 Market and past occupants are the stuff of some fairly zany local lore.
“(O)ne never really expects one’s dreams to come true. In my case, and to everyone’s surprise, they did. I lost my balance. ...” the statement reads. “I am now, at 52, a much kinder, quieter, more compassionate, caring person.”
The Giuliano/SRI museum proposal outline hasn’t been sent to anyone at City Hall yet. Despite the mea culpa, Giuliano remains openly suspicious of the official greeting his idea will get and insists it needs an unfiltered public airing first.
“SRI will make its proposal ... via the media first to ensure that this matter is truly a public concern and no parties are allowed the chance to play politics behind closed doors,” he said.
SRI is a New York State-registered 501(c)3 corporation formed by Giuliano to promote and support Hindu ideas and causes. Giuliano says he is a spokesman for SRI only, not a board member.
According to the outline, SRI would open up 735 Market, both the house and the acreage, for a Beatles/’60s museum and other venues’ public arts and culture events. SRI would correct current building code violations, set up the museum, provide permanent Beatles and rotating ’60s-music exhibits and related events, and establish a “John Lennon/George Harrison International Peace Garden” outdoors.
In exchange, SRI would ask the city to: grant a permanent variance on the residential-only zoning of 735 Market St.; secure tax-exempt status for the property so long as it’s a museum; forgive unpaid 2006 property taxes; supply basic yard maintenance for the museum; assist in the search for grants, low-cost loans and “other financial considerations” to launch the project; provide advice on marketing and land-use planning; and aid security.
From the public at large, SRI would seek volunteers to create and maintain the peace garden and help out with the museum, the outline said. An unpaid caretaker who lives at the house free of charge in exchange for doing repair and maintenance tasks would be sought. Private investors, corporate sponsors and free legal assistance would be needed as well.
Giuliano claims the SRI Beatles collection, which he and his wife Brenda Black/Vrnda Devi amassed over decades while writing about the band members, is valued at about $5 million. The proposal says SRI would “pay a recognized Beatles expert to value the collection to prove to all parties the rarity and marketability of the exhibits.”
Pieces listed in the outline include musical instruments and recording gear used by the band, hand-written lyrics and notations by members, a framed collection of more than 5,000 original negative prints of the musicians, unused and alternate Beatles album cover sleeves and miscellaneous items that belonged to Harrison and Lennon.
Giuliano has written or co-written about 20 exposé-style books about the Beatles and another 20 or so about other ’60s musicians and film stars.
Mayor Michael Tucker had a phone conversation with Giuliano after the US&J story about the museum idea two weeks ago and says he told Giuliano that the past — chronically overdue taxes, complaints associated with SRI occupation of 735 Market and Giuliano’s penchant for hurling invective at critics — makes the city highly unlikely to welcome the proposal with open arms. A read-through of the proposal outline this week didn’t change his mind.
“Great idea, wrong guy,” Tucker said. “I just can’t take it seriously. (Giuliano) has a long history here and I’m pretty sure that, because of that history, we’re not interested. We’ll see.”
Giuliano said SRI will make a full, formal presentation to city departments but he doesn’t state when. He wrote in an e-mail Friday that SRI is preparing to pay past-due water and sewer charges next week. He’s soliciting feedback on the outline and the question of whether the community would welcome a museum. Comments can be e-mailed to him at milesfar@hotmail.com.

Well, I hope these changes in his life that he speaks of are for real,
but only time will tell.

He's been such a sleazy writer, so I wonder how the Beatles exhibits
will be presented.

lockport's mayor said it best: "great idea, wrong guy." (shame, too, since lockport is near buffalo)

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal

— I am from the poorest of broken families in Olcott. As a boy on the beach, I told myself one day I would see the world and do many exciting things.
Well, I have. More than that lonely little boy could ever have imagined!
When I first became successful, like many, I had no reference on how to handle this sudden change in my life. After all, one never really expects one’s dreams to come true. But in my case, and to everyone’s surprise, they did.
I lost my balance. I became arrogant, selfish and extremely self-centered. I bought a big house, fast cars and showed off my new found stature just like any poor boy might from the wrong side of the tracks.
And then I found my faith.
Although my path starts (for me) in ancient India there is only one God and one beautiful blue world in which we all live. Now, as an important part of my spiritual growth much of my external wealth, career and even my once good name have been lost. And it has only done me good!
Ground down to my essence, I am now, at 52, a much kinder, quieter, more compassionate, caring person. And now I want to give something back (along with SRI) to the warm, friendly folk of Lockport.
I would like to publicly apologize to the City of Lockport Police Department and Chief Neil Merritt for the many times I was verbally abusive and very much off base in my immature, aggressive approach to simple problem solving. There are others, too, I have treated wrongly, and to you too, I am deeply sorry.
As for those who have helped me grow in a positive way over these many years is one name in particular, Lockport’s beloved Robert Gray (The Old Gray Goose). Goose is certainly one of the wisest, kindest and most truly compassionate beings I have ever known.
If, in the future I can use my time and talent to serve the City Of Lockport via this exciting new project on Market Street I give you my word I will do my very best to be a good steward of both the Beatles /Sixties Expo and my overlapping responsibility to the people of Lockport, New York, my home, wherever, the wind may blow me.

Mayor Tucker's comments were deadly accurate - I think it is an excellent idea, but Giuliano just isn't the man for the job. In 2001, he pulled a sick scam of pretending to be dead and having news coverage of his fake "death." After the tabloid-esque books he has written about public figures, the Beatles included and that execrable video entitled "The Beatles' Celebration," one wonders just what angle GG has up his sleeve. Let's hope that he really has changed for the better into that kinder, gentler person who wants to give back to his immediate community.

Just for the record, "The Beatles' Celebration" does not have much in the way of Beatle footage; it is mostly a video of GG talking about the Beatles and scenes of places the Beatles lived; venues in which they played and other sites of Beatle history. Nothing new here - just check out the reviews on www.amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/)

I was given the video for Christmas one year. I got about 5 minutes into it before turning it off and calling in a priest to have my VCR blessed. The Compleat Beatles is a MUCH better documentry.

I remember that 2001 thing. The word went round that Geoffrey was one of the victims of the WTC attack and was subject to a few small news stories on various sites. Then it quickly transpired that he was okay. Cough. Rule one of "faking death" class - don't answer your phone just after the news breaks. :-p

Well, I say blessed, I mean have it ejected with force out of my home so that it disintregates against a nearby wall, thus releasing the demons that had been created purely by me putting the tape into it. Then I'd wash my hands, which had unfortunately touched the offending video, in acid until the evil dissolved away. :-p

how on earth did giuliano ever get through the yoko forcefield to be photographed with her and sean?I wondered that, too. That's what's so slimy about him, that he made nice with her, then slammed her in the George book. :angry1:

BEATLES MUSEUM: Giuliano pulls plug on Lockport venture
By Anne Calos / calosa@gnnewspaper.com
Lockport Union-Sun & Journal

Saying that he’s been “genuinely hurt” by the negative reaction to his proposed Beatles museum, author Geoffrey Giuliano is “pulling the plug” on plans to locate the museum at the house at 735 Market St. At least for now.
Since Giuliano’s proposal to turn the property into a museum, reaction from city officials, as well as the public in the form of letters to the editor and the Union-Sun & Journal’s message board at www.lockportjournal.com, have been largely against the project.
“We have gotten a very unsympathetic, unfriendly and unenthusiastic reception from the townspeople and the mayor. Life is too short. They just don’t get it. This could be the jewel of the canal. Now I remember all the reasons I left Lockport,” Giuliano said in a telephone interview.
In mid-July, Giuliano, who has lived in Thailand for the past several years, offered to fill the large vacant Victorian home on Market Street, which is owned by the Sri Rahde International organization, with what he estimates is about $5 million of Beatles memorabilia that he has collected over the years. In return, SRI would ask the city to grant a permanent variance on the residential-only zoning of the property, secure tax exempt status for the property as long as it’s a museum, forgive unpaid 2006 property taxes, supply basic yard maintenance, assist in the search for grants, low-cost loans and “other financial considerations” to launch the project, provide advice on marketing and land-use planning and aid in security. The group would also seek community volunteers to create and maintain a “peace garden” and help out with the museum. Private investors, corporate sponsors and free legal assistance would be needed as well.
Giuliano, 52, has a long history with the city. He has been cited for numerous housing violations, unpaid taxes, water and sewer bills and the police had to seize two roaming cows from the property that Giuliano said were allowed in the city because of his Hindu beliefs. He is the author of dozens of books, primarily about the Beatles and other 1960s-era rock musicians, has been in movies, is a published singer-songwriter and is the producer and host of a series of two-hour radio documentaries.
He converted to Hinduism and for a time was known as Jagannatha Dasa Puripada, turned the home at 735 Market St. into a 501(c)3 corporation to promote and support Hinduism and in 2000, moved to Thailand. Since that time, the property has fallen into disrepair. Up until recently, about $25,000 in back taxes was owed on the home, but Giuliano said SRI has made a $12,000 payment.
Giuliano said he has the Beatles merchandise in crates and ready to ship, and he would still like to locate the museum somewhere.
“There is no Beatles museum located in the U.S., but mark my words, there will be. I’ve been considering putting it in Haight-Ashbury (in San Francisco) or Niagara Falls. They seem very welcoming,” Giuliano said.
Still, Giuliano says he would still consider making Lockport the site if opinion turns around.
“We’re feeling a little discouraged right now. If there’s anyone who would like to see it, we’d like to hear from them. We’re still open to the possibility. This is just how we’re feeling at the moment,” Giuliano said.
If the museum doesn’t materialize, Giuliano said SRI will keep the property up as well as possible.
“The immediate plan is to be as good a neighbor as we can be with the small amount of money we have. We’ll try to continue to work with the city and keep the house up as best we can. We plan to pay off the rest of the back property taxes and secure the property as best we can,” Giuliano said.
Mayor Michael Tucker, who has been against Giuliano’s proposal from the beginning, said Giuliano’s announcement means nothing to him.
“The fact that he’s going to pull the plug is fine with me. I never believed in the project to begin with. Maybe if he has a lot of Beatles memorabilia, he should sell some and pay his property taxes,” Tucker said.

Reasons like running from unpaid taxes?
