IS THE GREATEST BEATLES SONG EVER! George was, in my opinion, the most powerful Beatle. One reason for this is that he didn't need anyone else to balance him out, and he could do something without being tied to so many shackles. His lyrics, are the most touching, and his solo career the most successfull in all levels. The power in WMGGW is beautiful. Its so powerful in every way. I know I'm going to get strung up by this (especially from the guys, it tends to be ladies who prefer George), but I stick by it.

Well I am a guy and there are quite some other guys here who prefer George like me.
"The most powerful Beatle"...I am not sure how you mean "powerful". It does not really match with the Beatle George as I see him.
I do agree that his lyrics go way deep and are the most touching taken over all in the Beatles catalogue. He never did an "obladi oblada life goes on ...brah!!!!" whereas most of the Western world still does not understand what he means with "without going out of your door...you can see all things on earth".
Now as for While My Guitar...It is interesting that you pick out this song to underwrite your feelings for George. I would have picked another one. Why? I am not sure...maybe because we know by now the demo which finally showed up on the Anthology album and showed what a great musician George already was at the time, doing this 'acoustic' demo playing the most amazing piece of music. It became what it became on the White album and is a true masterpiece with the addition of the piano and the Clapper guitar part which to me carry this album song. Yet it is not my reference when it comes to Harrisongs on Beatles albums.
Still...a fantastic song and I am glad that you bring up this to highlight George's qualities in the band and yeah I really agree to what you say about the the most succesfull solo career.

I'm not really going into the who was the best Beatle thing. It's a bit silly if you ask me, and I really don't care.
I can't say that I prefer George over Paul, or Paul over George, John over George etc.
I do think George was a great songwriter, and that he is often overlooked. But when there are days that I prefer to listen to George, some others I want to listen to Paul.
"While My Guitar Gently Weeps" is a fantastic song, just listened to the beautiful acoustic version by George on his own again.

Yeah, I do hope this will not turn in to such a thread and I am sure it is not intended to do so..

No, it was simply intended to highlight his own personal style and your feelings on his songs with the band, as opposed to compared to the Lennon/McCartney numbers.

Sorry then, wrong impresion from the way your original post was written. Right, then I have to say.
"Something" and "Here Comes The Sun" blows most of the other songs from "Abbey Road" away. Had the Beatles gone on for some more years, they wouldn't been able to justify the just two George songs per album quota any longer. By they I mean John Paul and George Martin. He had so much great material back then that was just as great, some better then anything Paul or John had written.

I think George would have released another own album anyway, as he says during the Let It Be sessions.
I think..personal impression... that he felt trapped even doing his songs in the band because of the overwhelming and controlling (jealous? lol) way that probably his songs would have been touched and edited.
The way he introduced the mystical and Eastern influences to music and words is amazing. Who had ever done The Inner Light or Blue Jay Way -ish songs...

I like the acoustic one, too- I can picture it being recorded with the studio lights dimmed and incense sticks burning. It's quiet, unlike the outside world of 1968- assassinations, student demonstrations, race riots, Vietnam, etc.

I prefer the acoustic version as well...a very peaceful, intense song that never fails to delight...
Good points made by others -- I have long wondered and thought that George felt that he was trapped in a triple chrysalis with Lennon & McCartney and wanted to break free; spread his musical wings and follow his own musical muse. I have no doubt that George would have continued developing and continuing to perfect his own style...it is indeed his originality that made his work so effective.
With regard to lyrics, I have always thought George's solo work was brilliant. His natural expression; his gift of "weaving words with ideas" and creating something beautiful is a large part of his musical appeal.

Weren't many of the songs we went on to record originally demos intended for The Beatles?
