Builder Mark Morgan puts the finishing touches to the refurbished Grapes pub in Mathew Street.

MATHEW Street's legendary Grapes pub is creating a new display dedicated to the 1960s with the help of the Beatles' first manager.

Owners of the historic site, made famous as a favourite drinking hole of the young Beatles, denied they were changing the Grapes' name or reopening it as an artist-run gallery.

Reports in newspapers last week suggested they planned to rename it the Royal Standard.

Instead, owner Paul Bristow, 39, says he is dedicated to preserving both the name and history of the Grapes and is bringing together new memorabilia to go on show.

Mr Bristow, who has run the pub since last July with licensee wife Sue, said: "We've just had new Grapes signs put up outside and we've got absolutely no plans to change the name.

"When I took over I was advised 'don't change it' and I don't intend to. We're putting in new carpet and curtains and reupholstering some of the furniture, butwe're actually putting in more 60s memorabilia."

Regular Allan Williams, the Beatles' first manager, is among those who have donated artefacts for the new display at the pub, which attracts visitors from all over the world as well as being a city "local".

They include copies of original letters from the Kaiserkeller in Hamburg, where the Beatles honed their music, and hotel receipts from Scotland where the group - then still the Silver Beatles - played in early 1960.

Other Fab Four-connected items due to be displayed area Beatles magazine first edition, donated by another regular, and a bottle of beer which is brewed by Sir Paul McCartney himself and is only served to his friends and family.

Mr Bristow said: "We've also got an autographed picture of Mick Jagger, and a World Cup 1966 photo signed by Geoff Hurst.

"I love this place for its history.

"So many come in to see where the Beatles sat and I wanted to give them something more to look at."

I've been to the Grapes on many an occasion and it is quite nice!!!!! The new carpets and re-upholstery of the furniture is much needed though!!!!!

As for them changing its name...well...a few years ago, it became known as "The Famous Grapes"!!!!! It has that on the signs outside!!!!!

We made it in there for lunch our last day in Liverpool and I was kicking myself for not going sooner because they had by far the best food that I ate our whole week in England. I would've eaten there every day if I would have known. I recommend the steak pit stuff. I don't even like beef that much and I loved it; that's how incredible it was. We did get to sit in THE booth and it was amazing.
