View Full Version : Steve Jobs invites Beatles music to iTunes!

After successfully defending itself from a lawsuit by Apple Corps, Apple Computer CEO Steve Jobs on Monday invited the Beatles to join the iTunes Music Store.

“We have always loved the Beatles, and hopefully we can now work together to get them on the iTunes Music Store,” said Steve Jobs in a statement provided to Macworld.

The judgment brings to an end the lawsuit that accused Apple Computer of violating a 1991 agreement in its use of the Apple logo in association with what it regards as music-related products, the iPod and iTunes.

Apple Corps — owned by Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, along with the widow of John Lennon and the estate of George Harrison — wanted to win an injunction to prevent Apple Computer using the apple logo in connection with its iPod and iTunes products.

The judge disagreed and said the use of the Apple Computer logo was a proper one.

“We are glad to put this disagreement behind us,” said Jobs.

While Jobs may want to have the lawsuit behind him, it’s not over yet. Apple Corps confirmed in a statement that it plans to appeal against the decision.

Apple Corps confirmed last month that work was being done to remaster the Beatles collection in preparation for digital downloads.

The fact that the Beatles music will go online does not guarantee Apple’s market-leading iTunes Music Store will get the collection. When Yoko Ono made John Lennon’s catalogue available digitally last year, she did so on Real/Rhapsody, Napster, MSN and Yahoo! Unlimited, but not on iTunes.

Personally, I think everybody wins if the Beatles go on iTunes (Or even online) Apple Computer will profit from a popular band.
Apple Corps. will profit from opening up to a wider audience.
The fans will win by being able to listen to the Beatles on their iPods (Right now there is no 100% legal way to have the Beatles on your mp3 player See http://www.eff.org/deeplinks/archives/004409.php for more info on that) I think that if the Beatles were easily available on iTunes it would greatly reduce the risk of pirating Beatles tunes.

I know there was another story about The Beatles going online, but this is about Steve Jobs' personal invite for Apple Corps.

Agree 100%! Forget the lawsuit and put Beatles on iTunes and all the other services, everybody does win!

I agree with taxman. Just drop the lawsuit and put the Beatles on all music catalogs.

Right now there is no 100% legal way to have the Beatles on your mp3 player

The day the Beatles, the RIAA, or anyone else know exactly what is on my mp3 player, we will have much bigger problems to worry about. And I am emphatically not talking about illegal file-sharing online, but simply what I do in my home with my own CDs.

After a point the whole scenario begins to sound like this article from The Onion, the most prescient source of fake news on the web: http://www.theonion.com/content/node/43029

Uh oh. My iTunes and iPod are loaded to the gills with the Beatles. They're the vast majority, by far. Paul McCartney himself,in person, wouldn't even be able to convince me to take the Beatles off of my iPod!!

I'm sure noone would get in any trouble for legally purchasing a Beatle cd and importing it to your iPod/iTunes as long as you don't share it illegally.

Your point being?

I have somwhere between three and five thousand mp3s and no "mp3 player" at all, besides my computers. I don't think what players we use is really what this is about.

My Point is that a PSP can you play games and listen to music while the ipod has a small screen and is only allowed to listen to music. Thats my Point. Sorry if I have to critical about it. I'm just being nice. I dont want to be banned. Thanks Tony.

For those of you just joining us, our question this hour has chiefly been about whether or not it is TECHNICALLY legal to do just that. Apparently the record industry has argued in the past that it is NOT legit to do so, but may be changing its (i)Tune in a limited way.

Instead of a lawsuit, this is the motion the Beatles should have made in the first place. So what if Jobs called it Apple Computer? So what if their logos are both apples? If one can't distinguish between the name Apple CORPS and Apple COMPUTER, or tell the difference between a green Granny Smith and a silohouette of an apple with a bite taken out of it, then one is a complete moron.

We know now that the entire Beatles catalog is being remastered. Get it on iTunes first, make money for all involved and forget the "funny paper."
