One of the best Beatle books I have is 'Revolution In The Head' by Ian Macdonald.
It's the best of its kind, and a certain 'must have' for all Beatle people.

You wouldn't believe the library of Beatle books I own. Some of my favorites are: http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/cool.gif
The Complete Beatles Chronicle - Mark Lewisohn
The Long and Winding Road - Ted Greenwald
Paperback Writer - Mark Shipper
The Beatles Lennon and Me - Pete Shotton
Beatle Madness - Martin A. Grove
The Walrus Was Paul - R. Gary Patterson
Beatles Forever - Nicholas Schaffner
And my list would not be complete without these two: http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/wink.gif

Here's a couple of good ones. They both are compilations of interviews and discussions by the Beatles themselves. Very interesting and most enjoyable to read.I didn't want them to end.
Glass Onion:the Beatles in their own words,by Geoffrey Giuliano & Vrnda Devi
Things We Said Today:conversations with the Beatles, also by Geoffrey and Vrnda Giuliano

I've read Guilano's book about George. The book was good, but everybody seems to hate the guy. I think he's got some books about John coming out that is supposed to be all lies. What's up?

I don't like the man. If you read about this book, you won't like him either!
I have 'Lennon, lost interviews' by him, and it's okay. But now I want his head on a stick!

Nobody mentioned "I, Me, Mine," George Harrison's early autobiography. I'm not saying it was the greatest piece of literature I've ever come across, but it's worth owning.

I just got a great one. "The Love You Make" by Peter Brown who was a personal assistant to Brian Epstein and then to the Beatles. Great early days details from the inside.

I'll look out for that one then jtal909.
I can never find the time to read all the Beatle books I have.

I have that book too, but haven't gotten around to reading it yet. Too many books and not enough time.

This one is hard to put down. There are some things in it that Peter Brown claims were told for the first time.

I like Shout, but I can't remember the author's name.
Paul McCartney: Many Years from Now by Barry Miles is also really good in that it is mainly written from Sir Paul's perspective. It covers the writing of songs, Beatlemania from the inside, and a pretty good overview of what was happening in the London "Pop" scene at the time.

Another brilliant Beatles book by Barry Miles is "The Beatles, A Diary". It's quite a large book, full of every piece of information you could want. It has every date listed, from when they were born, onwards. The pictures are great too http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/wink.gif

George wrote "I Me Mine" back in the 70s, and I guess you could count Paul's "Many Years From Now." It's basically a biography written by somebody else, with one long interview spread throughout the book. I don't think Ringo or John ever wrote an autobiography.

"Apple To the Core" is also exceptionally good about the unraveling of the Beatles for the first 3/4 then the last 1/4 gets a little long winded with financial/business/lawsuits/Northern Songs/Klein/Eastman. What a mess!
I'm almost finished with "The Love You Make" and highly recommend it as an insiders' details of what went on behind the scenes that you've all read about elsewhere.

"Apple To The Core" is a good book as well. It gives the reader a fairly good inside look at day-to-day happenings at Apple Records HQ.
I could just imagine the looks on everyone's faces when George wired that the Hell's Angels were coming to visit.

Re Eppy, "The Love You Make" tells a lot from the Eppy perspective as the author was his personal asistant and then became that of the 4 Beatles. How Eppy used to take "brown paper bag " money from promoters because the British taxes were so high, for example.

There is only one I can think of. I believe it's called "The Man Who Made The Beatles" or something like that. I have it, but I must admit that I've never read it. It's his biography, so there's a lot of stuff about his childhood and early career that aren't exactly Beatles material.

Thanks Jerry.
It's strange how that happens. I have about 10 or so books I've bought but haven't read yet. Most of them Beatle books.
Sounds sad but - when I get a new beatles book, I just want look at all the pictures at first!!!

I live about 1/2 hour from Giuilano and know of his extensive Beatle collection. For a man who once had a close relationship with Paul and Linda,he's goon over the edge.Paul broke off the friendship and now Giuilano is taking revenge. His latest claim is Lennon confessed that one day in the mid '70's while Paul was "in town',Lennon stopped by for a chat.Linda was doing housework and Lennon helped with the bedmaking---and remaking. How fortunate that both Lennon and Linda are no longer alive. As with most of his claims, his proof is in his lawyers safe.

I too have just finished "The Love You Make." It is terrific. It is very moving in the way it is written. In all the books I have read, (which is only 3, really) this is the only one that was so well written that I cried at the Lennon murder. It was so beautifully written. Also, it tells things from Epstien's perspective. It is a great read.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned "A Cellarful Of Noise" written by Brian Epstein. I haven't read it. Has anybody? Is it any good?

Anyone ever read 'Love Me Do-The Beatles Progress' By Michael Braun.
It was written in 1963 and is interesting as a picture of the band, warts and all at a time just before it was realised that they were to become legends, in other words, it is not sanitised. I like it a great deal.

We have similar threads about books going on in the Paperback Writer forum. I'm going to close this, since it's a very old thread from 2000 and we have much more recent discussions happening now.
