I think Donovan is a pompous weiner whose ego VASTLY exceeds his talent. That said, I do like Hurdy Gurdy Man.

Just curious - why do you say that?
I saw Donovan in concert 20 or so years ago. He must've broken a half dozen guitar strings during the show! I only have his "greatest hits" but I really like all of them - "Catch the Wind" is a special fave.

Not much of a fan, his stuff is a little too delicate and precious for my taste, but he seemed nice enough when he was a guest at Beatlefest a few years back.

Let's not forget that Donovan taught John that finger picking style that he uses on Dear Prudence and Julia.

Did anyone see his appearance on Futurama a few years ago? It was an episode about the lost city of Atlanta. And Donovan sang a parody of the beginning of Atlantis. LOL
As for my faves-Sunshine Superman,Mellow Yellow,Atlantis, and Hurdy Gurdy Man (dosen't Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones play on that?)

Hurdy Gurdy Man, one of my favorites by Donovan with Jimmy Page on guitar. Oh, erik I didn't know Paul played bass on Mellow Yellow. Also, I check in as a die-hard fan of Donovan, sometimes I like precious & pompous!

Season of the Witch, an excellent song if there ever was one! I also like There is a Mountain aka Mountain Jam by The Allman Brothers Band! Season of the Witch by Al Kooper, Mike Bloomfield & Stehphen Stills from the Super Session album is also great! Lalena is another fave, I can almost picture one of the Beatles having a go at that one, perhaps Paul or George. Anyway, good topic Sally.

I'm taking my mum to see him soon. She's had a crush on him for 40 years. She's so cute too, she goes around the house all day singing Donovan songs because he's pretty much the only music she knows. I thought she was going to cry when I gave her the tickets. I also thought that the glomp she gave me was going to break me in two. I like Donovan too. The Hurdy Gurdy man album is a very good album. I also like that one song...oh...what's it called? Barabajagal? Something like that. I think it's a good one.

The coolest concert I've attended was Donovan and Liverpool at Beatlefest in Chicago about three years ago. Gave me chills. The coolest thing was that it was repeated the next night.
"Sunshine Superman" is one of my favorive of all songs ever.

Atlantis and Season of the Witch.
I loved Atlantis since I was a young child, even though I got antsy during the long "diatribe" at the beginning of the song.

I want to say Atlantis is a song used in the movie Good Fellows during a violent scene in a bar where Dinero & Pesci are kicking the crap out of someone...however, I might be mistaken about this!

Atlantis is my favorite song.
Here is a nice story:
Hippie icon Donovan was horrified to be the victim of a sensational police drugs bust in 1966, but was thrilled to have George Harrison on his side.
The late rocker realised the singer had been used as an example by police, and he readily offered financial and moral support when the shocking news broke.
Donovan recalls, "We were taken to Marylebone police station, booked, finger-printed and given a cup of tea. Then, at 4am, we were let out on to the city streets.
"The next morning the papers were full of it. At 9.30 am, the phone rang. It was George Harrison. He knew I had been victimised.
"'You can have GBP10,000 by noon, Don, if it helps,' he said.
"I felt better now that George had phoned, and replied: 'Thanks George, that's really so good of you to call. I'm OK with money.'"

Donovan is great. Love Poke at the Poke, Celtic Rock, People Used To (love love that one), and so many more... he's amazing. I've seen him a bunch of times, though years ago. Last time was in Santa Cruz and he was a bit agitated and kept complaining about the sound check "treble treble", lol... distracting.. but he was still good.

I never understood the 1966 classic, "Mellow Yellow."
What does "I feel like a trick of banana" mean? Or is that what he was saying? I never understood that. And what is 14?

I think it had something to do with smoking banana peels. -shrug-

Did any of you ever see him in the Pied Piper movie with Jack Wild?
Came out around '70 or '71.
